Berdych should play on the WTA tour

Tshooter

G.O.A.T.
He's too delicate for the ATP. Actually maybe the country club circuit makes more sense.

When I was learning to play we were taught to go right at the guy in the same situation. If playing a righty to go hard the the right hip (the left hip would make it easier to bunt a backhand volley).

Lendl would have eaten Berdych for breakfast.

One of my fondest tennis memories was Lendl verse Vince Van Patten at the USO. Lendl hit VVP right in the head in a similar situation. Note to Berdych. If you're too delicate then turn your back and concede the point. To expect the opponent to try a more difficult shot is not reasonable. This is the pros.

Almagro did nothing wrong. Kudos to the AO crowd for booing Berdych for refusing to shake hands.

I frickin' love Brad Gilbert. He just said that the first thing he would have done in the locker room if her were Almargro was "throw down."

Berdych is half a foot taller than Almagro.

Yeah but those Spanish dudes can flat out bring it.

Plus didn't you see how Berdych went down after he was hit by that ball? It was like he had been shot or something.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight.

@BD,

I actually thought back to that same match when Berdych refused to shake hands. I was thinking here we go again with Berdych and his talent for ******* off the crowd. He needs some PR coaching and a thicker skin.

I was just laughing at why he felt the need to make that gesture. He was playing Nadal in Spain... Did he not realize where he was at or something?

But yeah Berdych really does have a talent for making himself an unpopular ****** at times.

I wonder how the crowd will react when he plays Nadal in a couple of days haha! They're sure to boo him when he's introduced, I imagine.

I haven't seen this yet but it seems like pretty bad sportsmanship by Berdych not to shake hands. I can't remember the last time two opponents didn't shake hands after a match. I'm guessing Berdych doesn't like doubles much...

what a baby. perfectly legitimate shot by almagro. i thought it was common knowledge among all tennis players that by going up to the net you risk the chance of getting hit, and that's part of the game.

in addition almagro looked concerned and apologized immediately after the shot. bad decision by berdych, not only because it adds to the list of taboo plays of the AO, but now facing nadal where he's coming in as an underdog, he's going to have to fight uphill against the crowd. i'd imagine most of the tennis community will not side with tomas on this issue...

Bad move by Berdych.

But let's be honest, there was no need for Almagro to hit the ball straight at him. There was plenty of time and space for him to pass Berdych, IMO.

Brad Gilbert, P Mac, and that whole ESPN crew should just STFU. They sat there ragging on and on about bad sportmanship from Berdych and they suggested that he should be fined for bad sportmanship. And then on the next breath they wanted Almagro to kick Berdych's ass in the locker room for what....not shaking hands, for christ sake. Yeah, let's show Berdych what real sportmanship is by kicking his ass for not shaking hands. A bunch of hypocrites, wannabe-toughguy clowns they are.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the shot. Plenty wrong with Berd's pathetic reaction. This isn't recreational mixed doubles--it's big boy tennis. No one has an obligation to hit away from anyone else.

If I was in Berds place I wont shake hands with Almagro at first (when he apologized) but will after the match to show no harm done.

It was a perfectly legible move, however it is "morally wrong" (like winning a point on a let).

Bottom line, Berdych is a *insert word*

Exactly.

You know, there's been an oddly "I'm a man! Rawr rawr!" chest-beating tone to a lot of this criticism. I kind of wonder where it's coming from. Berdych was a dick, but come on.

and yea, get arrested and go to australian prison ? i don't think almagro would like that, especially after a loss.

BG is the biggest clown I have ever seen in a commentating booth.

From the horrible predictions to the tough guy macho talk about "throwing down", he's a piece of work that's for sure.

Maybe he should commentate on rugby matches?

Then at least his tough guy talk could be justified since it's a physical contact sport.

I don't think it is fair to call thomas a cry baby. He is a sensitive man. His feelings were hurt by Almagro trying to hit him. I don't think it is nice to hurt other people's feelings especially on tennis court.

Berdych did exactly what that **hole (or Lendl, for that matter, in similar circumstances) deserved.

Bringing Lendl up it's as though bringing up Mac as an example of sportsmanship. Sheesh.

I play in a stupid tennis league and I go for the body when I have no choice. C'mon, everyone who knows tennis thought that was a reasonable shot in that particular circumstance (on the run and ball below the net). Yeah, as some said previously, just turn away if you can't handle it. Referring back to Madrid Masters against Nadal, the more the crowd booed him, the better he played. He is obviously thick skinned and doesn't care what the crowd thinks. Sad to see such talented player showing bad sportsmanship.

Yeah. I also follow hockey - just yesterday they were talking about guy trying to draw penalties by 'crumpling' when hit - that's what Berdych did.

It's no fun getting hit - but it was the arm! If it had been the grill or the privates I could see him being a bit grumpy.

PS - your avatar is awesome.

Hey, let's not diss the WTA. Geez, I had a 4.0 guy hit at me at net three times during my last 8.0 mixed match, and you didn't see me whining about it.

Men are the fairer sex . . .

Cindy -- who never liked Berdych even before this

BG isn't a clown, he is just the most annoying commentator in the history of sports. I try to mute whenever he talks, it's so painful to hear.

Berdych has acted really badly here and I hope he knows it. Maybe we're wrong about the generation of baseliners, maybe they're just too scared to man up and risk taking a hit or two.

I'd like to say that a locker room scuffle would result in such a situation, but Berdy is such a little girl that he would probably press charged and drop out of the tournament. :(

This is not good for Birdy's $$$. But I've worked with a few Czech's. They have fantastic lives even though they don't have much money. They bang nice chicks that Facebook or Google millionaires can't get. (actually, most of those white guys marry/bang very ugly asian womens, just look at Mark's gf).

Oooh, and those cowardly American baseball players that rush the pitcher when they get hit. Suck it up American baseball players, or go play a woman's sport.

This isn't recreational mixed doubles--it's big boy tennis. No one has an obligation to hit away from anyone else.

This season I joined a hyper competitive mixed doubles ALTA team. I didn't know what they were like until I started playing with them.

There are two women and at least one guy willing to deliberately take direct shots at both men and women!

One woman in her 40s will ping net oppoents at least 2-3 times per game and always claims it was an accident. nobody who knows her believes her one bit.

The other woman, in her 50s, has repeatedly taken shots at me and has nailed other people. But when she was hit a couple of times by the woman in her 40s she was super PO'ed.

I've "jammed" other men who come to the net a lot in singles but I feel bad just hitting too hard towards a woman.

Agree 100%. Almagro is also known to be a bit of a ***** and a hothead. I don't blame Berdych one bit. And judging by the reactions of people here and elsewhere, you'd think Berdych threw his racquet at the guy. He felt like Almagro's action was unsporting and so he responded in kind. Wow, a guy making a decision for himself based on his own assessment of what happened. How dastardly. How evil. I'm sure Almagro's life is now irreparably ruined. Why stop at a fine? Let's electrocute him.

No, that's your opinion of Almagro's options. Stop masquerading it as an objective fact.

And it's only bad sportsmanship if he felt Almagro didn't mean to do it, which makes no sense, because then he wouldn't have been mad. So you can disagree with Berdych's assessment of the situation, but not his reaction to what he feels was an unnecessary d!ck move.

I wonder what the ESPN crew's reaction would be if their pet Roddick did this? Although to be fair Roddick is a jerk, he's never shown this level of lack of class.

What must be kept in mind is that when you hit away from the player in that situation you take the risk of him putting his racquet on the ball. It was a perfectly legitimate shot and Berdych now looks like a dick.

This is a case of bad sportsmanship.

The Madrid incident was solely caused by the terrible crowd that were cheering on Berdych's UEs and pushing him to the limit. There's only so much that one man can take before he gets too ticked off.

What does crying after a match have to do with this discussion? I'm not sure about all the Slams but at the Australian Open sportsmanship is taken very seriously and is personified by the hand shake.
