Berdych trashes majority of the Spanish team days before the DC final

Berdych proving again what a classy fellow he is.

Just ahead of the Davis Cup final, the Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych tells reporters in Prague that Spain’s Nicolas Almagro isn’t as good as advertised.

Berdych, the No. 1 Czech, will likely face No. 2 Spaniard Almagro on Friday. Berdych and Almagro have a sour on-court history. At the 2012 Australian Open, Berdych refused to shake Almagro’s hand after his fourth-round victory because Almagro hit Berdych in the arm with a ball when he was at net. Berdych later refused to apologize, saying he believed that Almagro was trying to hit him in the face.

Berdych owns a 8-3 record against Almagro and has beaten him four out of the five times they played this year, including at the U.S. Open and most recently indoors in Stockholm.

“I played faced Almagro many times this year and won most of them,” Berdych said. “If he’s nominated, he will be the weak point on which we can build our victory. He’s missing that little something that distinguishes great players [from the rest]. He’s won smaller tournaments won this year. But he always has a chance if he plays.”

Berdych also took a swipe at the Spanish doubles team of Marc Lopez and Marcel Granollers, which just won the ATP World Tour Finals. Berdych will likely pair with Radek Stepanek in doubles. They have won all three of their Davis Cup matches together this year.

“You have to congratulate them, but now they are expected to do something different, so just tell them to hurry up and prepare,” Berdych said.

Well, here is Berdych doing the trash talk that many have asked for! :). Good Berdych! Woo Hoo!. He is just being honest, he hates Almagro! :)

Lol, what a big mouth who hasn't done crap with considerable ability. If I was Almagro, I would be determined to crush this poser and rub it in his face.

I understand why he doesn't like Almagro, but insulting the spanish doubles team who just won the WTF is pretty stupid. I can't wait to see him get crushed by them next week.

LOL....thanks for making the DC final more watchable. I expect a Spanish washout......oh things could be quite good.

He has won a Masters, made a Slam final, made numerous Slam semis, made numerous Masters finals, and been top 10 for years. What has Almagro accomplished in comparision? Nothing.

So that gives him the right to trash talk Almagro? False. He's nothing but an oversized crybaby who can't take criticism or someone standing up to him.

Berdych is average at best. There is nothing about him. He is just dull to look at and his game isn't very interesting either.

Todays players are boring anyway. A little thrash talk is good. Tennis misses that. Berdych has in the past thrash talked Nadal too, who unlike his lesser Almagro is a way more accomplished player than Berdych, and I had no problem with that either. If more players were like that maybe tennis would still have the coverage it once did. Berdych is a better and more accomplished player than renowned mental midget Almagro so he hardly looks out of place throwing down a gauntlet to him. Now lets see how the mentally frail Almagro responds, if he responds like a warrior and champion for once, it will only add to the excitment.

I hope you are better than 6th in the world at what you do.

I like trashtalk and mindgames. Tennis is too much a gentlemen's sport. They need to leave their decency at home and go at each other.

Good on him. Isn't everyone sick of the marketing friendly cookie cutter responses from everyone. Let's not hang the guy cos he shows a bit of humanity. They don't like each other so let him razz it up a bit. It's not like the sport's turning into boxing with torrents of silly trash talk before every match. A tiny bit of pepper in the mix is fine by me.

That's just my opinion, you may think he is great! Each to their own. No need to get personal. And I have nothing against the trash talk as you can see from my post earlier on this page. Berdych should get some new fans with his trash talk!

Most of what he said is true and the rest trash talk/drama part is always fun before a big match. More reason to like Berdych.

In which case, I presume you are better than the 11th in the world at what you do.

If people enjoy a bit of trash talk, fine. But Berdych does leave himself open to criticism if he is going to have a go at another player like that. If he can dish it out without provocation, he doesn't need defending when some bounces back on him.

Thomas is quite right in his assesment of the qualities and problems of Almagros game and achievements. While Berdych isnt a GS winner yet but he has the game to beat top 5 players at the GS tournies and he still is improving while Almagro isnt.

Hahaha, I like Berdych. Nice guy. Stop whining people. Murray is a much worse person and way more two-faced than Berdych who, refreshingly, speaks his mind.

Berdych
As if he's such a great player. No way to talk about someone anyway IMO.

What he said about the doubles team is just some friendly trash talk though.

When did he do that?.

Very immature from Berdych, its probably the reason he hasn't taken more advantage of his massive talent (dude should be a multiple slam winner IMO, he is easily as talented as Djokovic and Murray). At least it makes the DC Final more interesting.

A bit rude, but enjoyable to say the least. Everybody else is putting on a public mask of class but this guy's pure entertainment at this point.

Trashing talking and controversy is good. Apart from diehard tennis fans (and there aren't very many of us all), who cares about the Davis Cup or a tennis event that isn't a slam. At least this spices things up a bit.

It's like the WTA chief executive at the time admitted that he loved it when Hingis would trash talk other players in her press conferences at her peak, because that attracted interest from more casual fans.

Similarly Agassi catching the ball against Jaite during USA's Davis Cup tie in Buenos Aires in 1988 was gold dust for sports journalists and tennis fans as it gave them something interesting to write/talk about.

i also missed the part where berdych called himself a great player.

Only because you are incapable of picking up on things that aren't explicitly stated, my friend.

Berdych is obviously missing that "something" that distinguishes the great players from the rest himself. However, he isn't going to rag on someone who he thinks is in the same boat with him. He is at best deluded about their difference in talent.

Don't understand these forums...one day everyone is complaining about lack of personalities in the game (read - more animosity). Then the minute a player makes even the slightest controversial remark, everbody is on his case.

Is Alamgro that browbeaten that he needs your sympathy? Let them settle it on the court.

Who really cares about either Berdych or Almagro. Neither has a particularly charming personality.

Not everyone is complaining about that. Just some people who I think should watch a soap opera if that kind of thing is what they find so entertaining...

Its not in anybody's control whether one prefers drama or not. Like I said, let them settle it on court.

This is awesome. Should be a heated final.

Berdy sounds like a dope. Lopez and Granollers just won the biggest title of their career, and that "incident" with Almagro at AO12 was embarrassing.

I also find it funny that Berdych talks about a player missing "that little something that distinguishes great players..."

The trash talking between the Spanish and Australian players ahead of the 2000 Davis Cup final was pretty memorable. Hewitt and Corretja sure did hate each other.

Bird's scintillating personality won him a new fan

Berdych 60-22 in 2012
Almagro 58-22 in 2012

Each have 2 titles.

Berdych is a moron.

Bulk of Almagro wins come on Clay 250's.

Berdych at least made better runs in MS1000 and Slams. Berdych failed in Wimbldon and Olympics....could have made better runs. Should have beat Pushray at the US Open.

Almagro was nasty after Wimbledon.....not even worth they time.

Berdych will mop Almagro....whom is the worst tennis player ever to play on Indoor Courts.
