Berdych trashes majority of the Spanish team days before the DC final

Todays players are boring anyway. A little thrash talk is good. Tennis misses that. Berdych has in the past thrash talked Nadal too, who unlike his lesser Almagro is a way more accomplished player than Berdych, and I had no problem with that either. If more players were like that maybe tennis would still have the coverage it once did. Berdych is a better and more accomplished player than renowned mental midget Almagro so he hardly looks out of place throwing down a gauntlet to him. Now lets see how the mentally frail Almagro responds, if he responds like a warrior and champion for once, it will only add to the excitment.

while i thought his comments about almagro were tame considering their history, its great to see some color in these interviews.

Well my interest in this tie has grown significantly. Tennis does need more of this. Will be rooting hard for Almagro

Whats the problem, Almagro is the weak link. It certainly isn’t Ferrer or the WTF winning doubles team.

When did he do that?.

2006 Madrid Indoors. Berdych was a big matchup problem for Nadal at the time, leading 3-1 in the head-to-head after beating Rafa in this tournament, hushing the crowd up as he did so, and got a telling off from Nadal at the net. Nadal hasn't lost to Berdych since.

There was also the spat between Nalbandian and Henman at this tournament as well, Nalby's quote of "He is no gentleman, he is the worst rubbish there is".

Even though Berdych doesn't have to play Nadal this time, it must be very awkward for Berdych to even hear the name "Nadal". Berdych has lost their last 11 meetings (and only 3 of those were on clay).

I think their 2007 Wimbledon quarter final match was the true turning point of the rivalry, when Nadal won in straight sets in the windy conditions (sound familiar?), despite many people backing Berdych to beat Nadal.

I like Berdych, i dont like Almagro at all, but he is still a very good player, and if he keeps his unforced low, he will give Berdych a hard time. But, they will be playing on a fast indoor surface, so i expect Berdych will overpower from the baseline.

I agree that more trashtalk is needed - tis boring to be all proper and nice the whole time:)

The only member of the Top 4 that Berdych can consistently beat these days is Federer, which is only possible due to age. Aggressive-Murray has him figured out on hard courts.

The only reason Berdych is only successful against Federer/Murray is belief. He's a mental midget more than anything. If he believes he can beat Djokovic/Nadal and doesn't choke, I think he can beat them once every 3 matches.

I agree, if Berdych had Djokovic's mental strength and Ferrer's tenacity, he would have been one hell of a player (pretty much goes for anyone:???:) but sadly he tends to fall apart mentaly for some reason...

100 % agree.

This kind of pre-match or pre-tournament interviews used to happen in the 70's and 80's all the time (from the famous Nastase, Connors, McEnroe), it used to add some spice to the matches. Right now everyone needs to be politically correct which is dull. Good on ya, Berdy.

This would of been 432476275691029045 better if he was talking about Nadal.

Lol, he wouldn't have said this about Nadal. He says it about Almagro because he knows he most likely will beat him, and because he doesn't like him.

Yeah, I thought that might be what he was talking about, but I don't think there was any trash talking there?. Over sensitive Berdych was mad at the crowd, not at Nadal. If anything, he seems surprised at Nadal's reaction at the net.

Well, here is Berdych doing the trash talk that many have asked for! :). Good Berdych! Woo Hoo!. He is just being honest, he hates Almagro! :)

the same people that complain about boring tennis players and want more jerks like conners or lendl now complain about berdych:D.

Berdy is just mouthing off because he knows Spain is the overwhelming favorite to wipe the courts with them. If he beats Almagro that could well be the only win the Czechs get at all seeing as Ferrer is off 2 titles and a 2-1 WTF performance and the Spaniard's just won the WTF. Funny he doesn't trash Ferrer, probably because he knows he is likely to lose to him.

Haha, Berdych is such a goof ball. I was going to root for the Czech because Rafa is not playing and Spain already had many Davis Cup Wins this decade, and feel that some other Country deserve to win and I do like Stepanek.

Now, I'm changing who I'll root for. It would be great if this BLOWS-up in Berdych's smug face .....

Well I wouldn't expect anything more from Berdych after all the junk that he's done. I'm not really a fan of any of the players from these countries, except Rosol so I'll be watching for the show more or less

I have always got the feeling Berdych doesn't always mean the snarky stuff he says in interviews QUITE the way they come off, but the intent is there, clearly. Don't mind it though. Makes me want to catch some of the tie.

The Berdych-Ferrer match on Day 3 (I'd like to think that the tie will still be live by then either way) is what I'm really looking forward to.

It will be very interesting to see how Berdych handles the huge amount of pressure on his shoulders over the next few days.

Since it will be first on Day 3, I think it will still be alive, since I'm thinking Ferrer will beat Stepanek, and CZE will win the doubles.

Talking of heated Davis Cup ties, anyone remember the Australia-Russia tie where Kafelnikov said he would "give Hewitt a tennis lesson"? Hewitt ended up beating him in straights... and opened his wallet after the match in the press conference, asking Kafelnikov how much he owed him!

Then Kafelnikov complained the grass court played like a potato field and the Australian team threw potatoes on the court after the tie to make fun of him... classic stuff.

I'm behind Berdych with these comments. Not that Almagro is that bad, but it actually makes the final quite watchable.

Too much false politeness in tennis.

Sure, if someone is nice, they're fake, it's just PR, etc. Apparently only when someone is rude he's actually being himself, eh?.

Alomst right. If your being rude about Almagro your being yourself. He is a little punk, most players on tour dont like him, ljubicic and soderling had problems with him publicly also.

classic indeeed

Hewitt beat the Russian 6-4, 7-5, 6-2, putting Australia in the Davis Cup finals against France. Hewitt gave his country an insurmountable 3-1 lead, and Australia finished the day with a 4-1 victory.

Hewitt was quiet all week as Kafelnikov talked about giving the Australian a "lesson."

"I wanted to come out here and kill him today," Hewitt said. "There's nothing better than beating a bloke who's been mouthing off all week about how he's going to beat us."

Patrick Rafter joined the fray Sunday, declaring Kafelnikov a bad sport.

"I felt like jumping the net sometimes and going on the court and giving him a big serve," Rafter said. "He's disrespectful, not just of his Russian teammates but of the game of tennis. He's given a bad example, but no one's listening."

The straight-sets loss didn't quiet Kafelnikov, who earlier in the week called the courts "a potato field."

"He's young and enthusiastic, but his game doesn't impress me," Kafelnikov said. "He doesn't create any specific situation; his serve is mediocre. He had a good day. That's it."

That's just going from one extreme to the other. All I meant is, people nowadays are very aware of building a certain public image, and particularly in interviews they are giving the same standard, functional and often boring answers to questions. It's just nice to see Berdych not particularly pandering to expectations and being frank about his views on this final. It's just a bit more entertaining.

Well he better not lose to Almagro after having said this.. I like Berdych but I don't like these kind of backhanded, nasty comments. He can be as arrogant as he wants to, but don't go out of your way to insult other people. Anyway, I think Berdych is the one that's missing that "little something" to become a great player. He can play great at times but he's as inconsistant as can be.

And player's have had problems with these two publicly as well. Ljubicic still won't stop running his fat mouth about Nadal, and is a crybaby jerk who uses Nadal's name to get attention. Soderling also has a lousy reputation in the locker room, and isn't well liked by his peers. I don't like Almagro either, but those two guys have no room to talk at all.

Curious that Kafelnikov had more career prize money. he had less titles and less important ones, didn't he?.

Yeah, I was thinking if those two have had problems with someone it doesn't exactly say much...

Kafelnikov and Hewitt both had 2 Slams but Hewitt also had 2 WTF and 2 Masters titles. Kafelnikov had none of those but he did win the Olympic singles gold medal, ironically at the 2000 Sydney Olympics!
