Besides tennis shoes...?

What other kinds of shoes besides tennis shoes are good for tennis? And why? Not everyone is into tennis enough to buy tennis shoes, so I'd like to tell my students what other kinds of shoes are good (for hard-courts only). I think that from best to worse the order will go like:

1. Tennis shoes
2. Basketball shoes
3. Cross trainers
4. Running shoes (since these are not designed for sideways movement)
5. Any shoe that marks on the court

Thanks for your help!

Anything other than tennis shoes will burn up the outsole in less than a month on the court. Hell, I've even burnt a hole in the toe of Nike tennis shoes in 2months on the court.

Bearing this in mind, I would suggest that they get some cheap wilson shoes(~$35) at the minimum. Nicer pair if they think they're going to get into the sport.

Basketball shoes are second best for tennis court use, however this is only for support reasons, the rubber outsoles are very thin and very soft. I've eaten through the soles of a pair of jordans in 3wks playing on the court.

For tennis you need something that has support and is built like a tank.

I have tried New Balance Cross Trainers, mainly because they were on sale.

They were comfortable and worked well, but the outer soles lasted only about 1/3 the time the New Balance tennis shoes (CT series) would last.

So, I learned a lesson: (1) Stick to real tennis shoes and (2) sometimes saving $30 isn't a real saving.

nothing besides tennis shoes are going to work. + pretty much all basketball shoes look like sh*t

Tennis shoes are designed specifically for tennis. Anthing else you are compromising your feet and ankles. IMHO.

tennis shoes are too plain

Nike Shox UPs

I probably would have slightly agreed maybe two years ago, but recently, a lot of tennis shoes on the market today are very respectable in terms of looks. (Excluding Nike BFIII) As always, my opinion only. :)

Basketball shoes would be great. I play both quite a bit and if they could make a pair of durable Huarache 2k4's which i only use indoor, these shoes would be great for tennis. The ankle support, traction, and the weight of the shoe are superior to any tennis shoe I've worn. Cushioning is not as great though as it's an indoor shoe but I doubt they can add durability to this shoe w/o weaking some of the other facets of it.

In fact since I'm replacing the basketball shoes I think i will try to play tennis in them next time. :)
