Federer's backhand is like Russian Roulette--you press hard enough and he's going to shank it. It's pretty when it's well-executed, but it's just so inconsistent and defensive. It's nowhere in the league of Gaudio, Guga, Gasquet. If I was going to play Fed I'd just keep pressing on that backhand of his because it's bound to go off sooner or later--it's that much of a liability when he isn't "on."
All true except not many players of today have the ability to keep pressing Federers backhand to break it down. It used to be but not anymore. You cannot say his backhand is not in the league of Gaudio or Guga or Gasquet, because they use it very differently. Federer has more varieties in his bh but doesn't hit as many clean winners as the other 3.

Best backhand poll without Guga or Gaudio?

No, I can say that Fed's backhand is nowhere in the league of Gaudio, Guga and Gasquet because for those players it's a Money Shot that they are extremely comfortable with using when they are under pressure. Fed's Money Shot is the forehand, which is why he keeps running around that backhand.

That is Moya.

Fed forehand is definitely much more a weapon than his bh, but that is not a proof to say his bh is nowhere near Gaudio Guga and Gasquet. That is an exaggeration.

Roger's is the best overall -- slice, topspin, angles, on the run -- but Safin and Nalbandian are up there. Gasquet, Gaudio and Kuerten have very nice ones ... THe prettiest aren't necessarily the best. Among the women, Justine and Venus have great ones, and Lindsey's is pretty good, too.

I think Justine's back hand is the best in the business - man or woman. She's small and thin and yet she generates so much power and can handle power.
