Was watching an old top gear episode the other day where the hosts were discussing what they thought were great driving songs. It got me thinking as to what i believe are great driving songs, and i'm just curious to see what people on TTW think :)

For me, my favourite driving song is; Dakota - Stereophonics

Excellent choice. But I'm going to have to go with "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins.

If I'm driving a long way at night I've always been partial to Telegraph Road from Dire Straits. It's strange as it doesn't really fit in with my musical tastes. I think it might be to do with my father's obsession with it when I was a kid, probably heard it a lot in my sleep :)

Well if no one's going to mention it, then I gotta!

"Highway Star" by Deep Purple

and ofcourse, "Ace of Spades" by Motorhead

And anything by Rage Against the Machine

There is only one song, gentlemen.

"Fuel" by Metallica. Guaranteed to have you at your desired destination in 8 seconds flat.

Excellent choice! (but then the live version from Alchemy)

Led Zeppelin is always awesome driving music, especially with some of their longer songs, like when the levee breaks. Led Zeppelin 4, Houses of the Holy, and Physical Graffiti albums are absolutely great driving CD's. In the car, you can really appreciate how everything, vocals, guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboard all fit so perfectly together!

how has no one said highway to hell yet?

my pick is "sons of thunder" by High on Fire. it's actually what I play to get pumped up for matches, but driving to it would be awesome too!

Also

Tom Petty running down a dream.

High speed dirt by Megadeth

And I stand alone by Godsmack

I would play Project Gotham 2 on original XBOX for hours mainly just to ilsten to the custom tracks I loaded.

Try something a little more abstract and refined, some Ligeti would be good, how about Atmospheres, Lontano, Melodien and Requiem (Ligeti is probably the 'best' composer of the second half of the 20th century, makes an orchestra sound like something else entirely, in a good way, some of his music was used in 2001 for the scary bits with the lights and monolith so some might know it already, if there was any justice in the world he would be as famous as Mozart and Beethoven.)

Driving to those pieces is quite surreal, suddenly everything around you becomes meaningful or full of purpose, try it.

"Driving"---Pearl Harbor and the Explosions.
"In My Car"---Joe Walsh.
"Drive My Car"---the Beatles.
