I liked Mad Max, Bridge of Spies, Black Mass, Star Wars VII, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Haven't seen The Revenant yet, but I have high expectations.

There's some more I have to see like Son Of Saul,The Revenant,Hateful Eight,The Big Short,Spotlight but from what I've seen favourites would be:

This Is England '90 (Miniseries)
Victoria
The End Of The Tour
Sicario
Love and Mercy
Carol
99 Homes
Buzzard
Cop Car
The Wolfpack
It Follows

Sicario, Kingsman (UK release was 2015), The Martian, Mad Max, Ex Machina and The Force Awakens. Steve Jobs and Macbeth were pretty awesome too, shout out to Fassbender. Honourable mention: Bridge of Spies. I fell asleep during it, but that was more down to my lack of a proper sleeping pattern. The first 30 mins and the last hour were fantastic. UK releases are generally quite late though, so lots of the Oscar films will be out in a month or so (The Revenant, The Hateful Eight, Creed, Anamolisa, Room, Trumbo, Spotlight, The Big Short, Joy etc)

It seems to me that the best films this year have been more modest entries from the international scene.

I thought Timbuktu was a strong movie. (Was released in 2014 for Cannes etc. though)

Planning to watch About Elly soon, which I've also heard is good. I also want to watch The End of the Tour--DFW was deeply fascinating to say the least.

I think when all is said and done,The End Of The Tour is my favourite of the year. It's not a biopic and I've never read any of DFW's work or seen any interviews so I don't really care how well Segel nailed his mannerisms or how well it stuck to the facts. I just really enjoyed the thought provoking dialogue (much of which resonated with me) and the chemistry between the leads. Sort of a My Dinner With Andre of the 21st century...

Timbukto and Tangerine were nominated for last year's Academy Award (foreign section) iirc.

Sounds very much like that Iranian movie with the same name. I think the Iranian name was Darbaraye Eli by the director of (The ?) Separation.
It's the Iranian movie indeed.
Have you seen them? And what were your fave films of the year?

1. The Martian --- so good
2. Mission Impossible: The Rogue Nation
3.Fantastic four

Another vote for Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. After seeing the latest Bond film, it reminded me of how great it was. The Vienna opera scene was one of the best in any film imo.

Haven't seen The Martian or Mad Max yet, but hoping to do so before the new year.

Yes, I saw both the movies. A Separation was great. THe other one was marred by awful subtitles.

I have not seen any 2015 movies. I don't go to the cinema. I will wait for the Oscar nominations, get all these movies and see them at home before the Awards. That's what I did last year.

Actually, now that i have a list, i'll start procuring right away.

(I mostly watch old movies: noir, or good french and Japanese directors. Been seeing works of Ozu lately.)

Don't know if this will count as it's anime, but Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F. Hands down.

Omg thanks for reminding me to watch Mission Impossible, I think I'm going to now while I'm actually in the mood for it bc I LOVE 3 and 4.

Here's my list:

10. Beasts of No Nation
9. Sicario
8. The Big Short
7. The Hateful Eight
6. Room
5. Mad Max: Fury Road
4. Ex Machina
3. Bridge of Spies
2. The Revenant
1. Spotlight

Honorable mentions: The Force Awakens, Carol, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, The Martian.

Yes it's very good...........it's in the same vein of "halt and catch fire" dealing with techno geeks and what the PC and techno boom has brought (Halt though is a period piece set in the 80s at the start of the PC boom and is GREAT as well).

Silicon Valley is satire - but as this is a Mike Judge show you get lots of over the top stuff. If you liked Office Space this is the next level
Thanks for the recommendation of HCF, sounds good.

Maybe it didn't catch the cut off for 2015 but I thought Anomalisa was one of the best films of 2015 in terms of originality. Amazing lifelike characters, quirky yet very humam and poignant. One of Charlie Kauffman's best.

I liked the martian, and big short a lot. Entertaining, light, interesting, informative...good fun for everyone.
I think highly of the revenant and spotlight. Fine films. Not easy to make. Not easy to watch. Took guts.
I have not yet seen Brooklyn. I hear good things.

The seventh Star wars film was a fun ride, but mostly because i saw it with my kids and friends. And i had enjoyed sw and empire sb in the late seventies.
I liked s.o.Compton, but i also thought it was cheesy and advertorial.
DOPE was....uhm, fresh. I actually watched it twice.

I saw Whiplash in 2015, but that was from 2014, so it does not really count. I am mentioning it because i Enjoyed it a lot....as a tennis guy, former coach and current tennis parent. Music and sports have gotten to a ridiculous point. JK Simmons was a freak.

Is it just me, or are most of the top movies these days remarkably cringe-inducing?

I tend to agree,if you talk about a 'top movie' it generally falls into one of two categories: Big budget blockbuster or oscar bait. Both categories can churn out some good movies, but rarely do they ever go beyond that...

Truth^
remember a movie called The East? Or Safety Not Guaranteed? I was just thinking how cool it would be if one of those were on cable or netflix or something.

In my opinion, the pilot is some of the best television I've ever seen.

And I watched Breaking Bad.
