My pick is the FO, because of the emergence of Nadal as the new King of Clay. In addition, who can forget the way the crowd turned against the umpire in the match against Grosjean and started to boo every time he called the score. Nadal was also victim of the partisan crowd that day.

It was also good to see Justine Henin- Hardenne reclaim her French crown and save a couple of Match points in the process.

I gotta go with the Us Open this year on the ATP side of the fence. There were some awesome matches and most of them include Andre Agassi. But I also enjoyed Coria vs Massu, lots of drama there. The WTA side was lack luster.
Witnessing Roddick going out in the 1st set the stage for an great show to come, just can't get over if you beat the #4 Seed as Muller did, shouldn't that mean you should be in the Semis at least? Oh no not in this World, this guy takes out the #4 Seed and loses the next Rd. Gotta love the stuff ....

Hewitt-Nalbandian
Hewitt-Chela (the spit match)
Nalbandian-Gonzalez
Safin-Hewitt

I think if we're considering the men's side, then the Australian Open provided a number of really great matchups (Agassi vs. Federer, Roddick vs. Hewitt, Safin vs. Federer, Safin vs. Hewitt). Obviously not all of these matches played out to be inspiring, but the SF with Safin/Federer has to be the match of the year on the ATP.

On the women's side Wimbledon was easily the best. Venus tearing through Pierce, Sharapova, and then surviving against Davenport (in the women's match of the year) provided a spectacular tournament. Extra credit goes to Wimbledon as well for the minor dramas provided by JHenin-Hardenne's first round loss to Daniliidou and Serena's 3rd round loss to Craybas.

My vote went to USO because of Agassi v Blake SF && Agassi v Federer F
I also loved the AO Safin v Federer SF
It was nice to see Nadal emerge in the FO and the Nadal v Puerta F was awesome

My top matches for 2005 are :

2005 AO SF Safin d Federer 5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, 9-7 (ends 26 match win streak for #1 FedEx)
2005 FO F Nadal d Puerta 6-7 (6-8 ), 6-3, 6-1, 7-5 (Puerta playing injured)
2005 USO SF Agassi d Blake 3-6 3-6 6-3 6-3 7-6 (8-6) (This match was played on the biggest showcase in the US, night match Arthur Ashe stadium, 5 setter decided by last few winners in tiebreaker after midnight infront of an electric crowd)

really? no one cares about women's tennis.
newsflash - the wta is the most popular women's sport league in the world. it's not like golf, where the lpga is a step child to the pga tour. women's tennis draws ratings as men's tennis, if not often, higher.

Maybe sometimes, in some parts of the world women's tennis draws higher ratings. I doubt it's true everywhere, or all the time.

Aussie open easily. Lleyton Hewitt first Aussie in the final since pat cash. the four top seeds get into the SF's. Safin beats Federer and the Australian open celebrated its 100 birthday.

cant get much better than that.

AO for sure, USO a close second.

They were a bit more unpredictable and Safin v Fed AO was the best tennis match this year bar none.

I'm going with the U.S. Open, primarily because Katrina hit and once power was restored, all I had to do was sit at home and watch tennis. :)

It's gotta be the US for me, some incredible matches. The electricity in those night matches is incredible plus it was a good tournament for Americans. AO was good too. W is usually my favorite but very disappointing this year.

Reread the post.
noone said women tennis draws higher ratings "all the time" or "everywhere". but rather that, womens tennis is obviously very popular, contrary to the postings on this board by teenage boys that "noone cares about women's tennis". maybe they don't like women's tennis but they certainly
don't speak for the millions of us who do.

The best matches on the mens side were probably Safin-Fed at AO and Agassi-Bake at USO. But the best matchup with the highest media hype, exspectation and tension was the Nadal-Fed encounter at FO: The alltime great vs the new teen sensation, the maestro vs the raging bull, the allcourt king, seeking for his lone missing link, vs the red hot player with his first major in sight. The standard did not quite match the exspectations. On the womens side i found several matches at Wimbledon very good: Clijsters-Davenport, Venus-Pierce,Venus-Sharapova, Venus-Davenport.

Urban, I agree that the FO matchup between Nadal-Fed was an awesome hype that did not live up to expectations. I think Roger now probably wants a FO slam as much as Nadal wants a hardcourt slam. Bet Nadal will gets his wish first :)

I liked the matches at Aussie Open, Roddick vs Hewitt, Safin vs Fed, Safin vs Hewitt, Agassi vs Fed... Sharapova overcoming Kusnetsova, that WEIRD match with Sharpova vs Serena.

However, I definitely found the US Open more exciting. Roddick loses first round. Safin gets injured. Blake beating Nadal, Blake vs Agassi, Ginepri reached the semis, Agassi got to finals, Fed won again... gotta love it.

Yep - in all my lifetime, I don't know anyone who discusses women's sport: either down the pub/bar or on internet forums.

Wimby for me because of the totally unexpected (except to me and Andy Zarzeula) win by Venus. Shut the Williams haters up for 15 minutes, an even more considerable achievement!

US Open for the men's. I am still watching the Agassi/Blake match on tape every few days.

It's a tougher pick for the women's. I was debating between Wimby and Roland Garros but I voted for RG. Justine is just beautiful to watch on clay.

I voted AO, suzuki vs federer and safin vs federer.

USO for the blake and ginepri matches with a fun showing by santoro vs federer.

I picked the Aussie Open for Safin-Fedex, all of the Hewitt drama with a ton of his long 5 setters with NAdal and Nalbandian. But the US Open also had a ton of drama with all of the before mentioned matches, not to mention Fed vs. Santoro. That match left me speechless. Overall, tennis has been great this year (as always).

Well since I didnt get to watch any of the AO and I wasnt all that interested in USO or Wimbly Ill go with... RG.

RiosTheGenius said:
yeah, no one cares about women's tennis. so I guess that makes the AO the best.

Then why exactly is WTA World still up? If nobody cares about Womens tennis surely it would have been shut down by now cos of a lack of posters.

US Open by a country mile. :D

The only memorable match from AO was Safin-Federer. The USO had classic matches, breakthroughs, great sob stories, upsets, and a final to remember. It the only slam this year where I thoroughly enjoyed every match that was played.
