I stopped frequenting my local GWs because their crap-to-gem ratio had risen exponentially over the past few years, and because I ran out of storage room at home. However, when these stores began to open again after our pseudo lock-down was lifted, I decided to go back to have a look, because I was curious to see whether there was a 'COVID effect' of sorts on the inventory, whereby donors who were forced to stay home might have taken the opportunity to clean out their closets and attics, flooding the showrooms with interesting items that would not have been there otherwise.
As it turned out, the inventories I saw were surprisingly sparse, and as crappy as ever when it came to racquet selection. One of the stores near me that used to be well-stocked is now permanently shuttered (presumably a victim of the extended lock-down). It certainly doesn't look like there was much of a surge in closet-cleaning during our SIP period; and if there was, almost none of the closets in question appeared to have contained anything of interest, save for one:
The RF97 has a 2017 date code, while the Ki Q+5 is a 2019 model. Both show signs of having belonged to the same donor. Would this person have donated these almost-new frames if there were no pandemic? I rather doubt it.
I must say, I had no idea the RF97 was painted in such a strange way - The entire frame was given a glossy paint first, after which the rubbery matte paint was applied to the top and the bottom of the racquet. How did they expect the matte paint to stick to a glossy undercoat with no primer in between?! Given that the glossy sections are so small relative to the matte parts, wouldn't it have made more sense to reverse the order in which the paint was applied?
