Best midsize rackets in your honest opinion :)

Hey all!

For a long time, I've been loving my AI 98. Perfect stick IMHO.
But, I wanted to try out a midsize frame, after playing with a Jack Krammer Staff with natural gut.
It was perfect, so anyone have midsize rackets for recommendations?

Thanks!

Uhhh I'm just looking for a headsize in between 70-90. Thanks!

Might want to try reading the title of the thread, as set by the OP.

I bet the OP stopped following this thread long ago, but yeah sanders, lets honor the OP.

Are US and UK shoe sizes still based on the barleycorn unit of measurement? If GMO barley produces a bigger seed will I ever be able to find the right size shoes again?

edit: this is my all time favorite chart, it represents all the english units of measurement

Yes, to all of the above. The KPS88 absolutely crushes the ball, if you can handle the swingweight.

The KPS88 is a girlie man's racket :). I received my Snauwaert Dyneema S60 this morning and took it for a spin. It is 357g strung (no overgrip) and has a swingweight of 410 kg*cm^2. Yes sir. 410.

You're right. A racquet that's only 12.6 oz. is indeed a "girlie man's racquet". ;) Real men used to use 16 oz. wood racquets.

"(Jack's personal stash of JKA's were 5 1/4" grips, and about 15 ounces unstrung. Quite a racquet, but you had to realize that he had developed his game alongside Budge and Vines, who depended on 16 ounce frames for power and control, in those days.)"

While we are on that subject, I wish at the time I would of tried the KPS88 if I wasn't such a pu$$y since I play with my BLX PS 90 that's weight up to 364 grams.

I'd be curious to know the differences.

I would think @asifallasleep is probably the only one who could tell me but any other feedbacks are welcome.

The PS88 is the 90 or the 85 on steroids. Everything is bigger with more plow. Bigger serves, bigger groundstrokes, heavier spin, more plush. The sole advantage the 90 has over the 88 is quickness through the air because the static and swing weight of the 90 is lighter and it's more head light. I could hit similar backhand slices with both, but the 88 took more effort. Quickness is a huge weapon tho, and a good tradeoff for a slight drop in power.

It's all subjective tho. You'd have to try them both and see what works. IMO it also depends on your level of play. Being able to compete on a high level day in and day out requires that you can comfortably and successfully swing your racquet of choice for hours and hours. There is no perfect frame and it's all give and take.

The weight of the PS88 and the head size of the 85, 88 and the 90 are all detriments at levels above 4.5 IMO. Below the 4.5 level, if you are skilled enough, you can dominate with any of these frames. They are some of the finest sticks ever made.

Can you hit a high level ball over and over competing against the pace and spin of players using modern frames?

It's no coincidence that standard frame is 95+ in the modern game.

At present, between the 3, I prefer my 85 to my 88 or 90 because quickness is a huge weapon and the PS85 is no slouch in the power department either.

My main stick is the RF97, which is insane in regards to serves, volleys and one hand backhands. With the exact same stroke on my one hand backhand, it's just soooooo much easier to hit the ball with the RF97 compared to my PS85, K90, PS88 and PT630. Hit's such a killer ball with less effort it's crazy. Forehands are also bigger but less consistent. It's all a trade off.

Best mid IMO: Saint Vincent PS85

I loved my K90's for so long and didn't revisit the PS85 consistently until recently and i must say it may be the best stick ever made. Breakpoint told me it was better than my K90, I wasn't sure initially, but he was right.

When am I ever wrong? ;) Just kidding....... LOL

To be fair, there's a lot of good things about the K90, too.

Hmmm....maybe I should give the RF97A another look? Nah..... :p

Excellent stick. Volley butter, serious precision, and comfortable as a feather bed.

I'll throw another vote in for the Volkl PB10 Mid if we're counting 93s as mids. Like others have said, with the sliding scale these days, the words standard, mid, midplus and OS don't mean as much. I generally navigate with the inch reading. It's more accurate anyway since there's a pretty big difference between an 85 that's a mid and a 93 that's a mid. At least in the ones I've played.

Roadway, the VE10 Mid is such a ... gosh, how to explain ...

OK, but bring ALL the power you have. String with 17g at around 50 (non-poly) and you'll be set.

After all these years and after many mids I went through, I kept the Pro Staff Midsize (2 Chicago & 2 Saint Vincent versions) and the Ultra 2 (St. Vincent version). It's just hard to put any other mids over them, except maybe the Prestige 600 neon green lettering version. Another older one I could think of is the Donnay X-Red 94 plus, but is 94 a midsize? Or, is the cut off at 93? I think anything that is 95 or over should be called mid plus , and anything that is 100 or over should be called oversize. Just my opinion.

Of the newer ones, I liked the IG Prestige Mid, Volkl Powerbridge 10, Volkl Organix 10 and the Vcore Tour 89.

Thanks, anirut! Does it have the crisp and raw feel like that of Redondo?

No, not as crisp. It's very muted due to the fiberglass, but in a very nice way. I should think you can still find 'em on the bay.

BTW, there are two versions: light and heavy versions. I got my first one in Bangkok and it's heavier than the one I got from the bay. And I don't think it's manufacture error as they weight way different, sorta like the Wilson ProStaff US and Asian versions.

Alright, so lately I've been re-reading this thread I've created. I want to ask a different question; do you guys know any midsize rackets, 93 sq. inches and below, that work well with a thin gauge poly? Such as 17 or 18 or even 19-20 gauge. Thanks!

My favourite mid used to be the Dunlop 200 series of frames (4d and Biomimetic) but these days I like the Volkl SG Mid 330 and quite like the old Tecnifibre T Fightb325 as well.

Manufacturers were labelling 95's as mids more than 10yrs ago. These days 97's are mids easily.
Manufactures also say that this new racquet will give you 33% more power and 28% more control while giving you 25% more feel. They also say that Djokovic uses a Head Graphene XT Speed Pro and that Murray uses a Head Graphene XT Radical Pro.

Just because a manufacturer says something doesn't make it true.

BTW, here's a racquet from about 10 years ago:

Have you played with this racquet? I am curious as I recently picked up an old Blade 93 and hit with it at a clinic. Whew, when you hit the sweet spot, amazing.
yeah, ive owned the f93 several times. very easy-playing mid. lowwww powered is the main drawback. i couldnt do anything with the blade 93, it was as useless as a boat anchor in my hands.

The 6.1 95 is a awesome frame - very headlight, good springy catapult effect, does everything well really. Swings faster than its weight.

The Yonex RDIS 93 - is a very stiff frame. It feels solid as and quite powerful for its size. Big sweet spot.

The Redondo Mid is no way 93 in size! Try around 88. Sweet spot is tiny. No power!

Best mid plus the PK Q Tour 98 - massive springy catapult effect results in insane power! Has a buttery feel.
