Since it is almost impossible to determine who the greatest player is, I thought it would be interesting to see who people thought was the best of each era/decade.
20's: Bill Tilden, Henry Cochet, Rene Lacoste, Bill Johnston
30's: Tilden, Jack Crawford, Fred Perry, Ellsworth Vines, Don Budge
40's: Budge, Bobby Riggs, Jack Kramer
50's: Kramer, Pancho Segura, Pancho Gonzalez
60's: Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Lew Hoad, Arthur Ashe, Roy Emerson
70's: Ashe, Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Guillermo Vilas, Ilie Nastase
80's: Connors, John Mcenroe, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Boris Becker
90's: Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Gustavo Kuerten
00's: Kuerten, Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin, Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, maybe Novak Djokovic in the near future

My picks:
20's: Bill Tilden
30's: Don Budge
40's: Jack Kramer
50's: Pancho Gonzalez
60's: Rod Laver
70's: Bjorn Borg
80's: Ivan Lendl
90's: Pete Sampras
00's: Roger Federer

It seems like the only decades where there can be a lot of debate as to who the best was are the 30's, 40's, 80's, and maybe the 70's.

great list.It is really tough in the 80´s, Mc and Wilander could claim as well to be the best decade player. But, for the rest, I fully agree with you.

¿Where is Newcombe? he won quite a fewer more titles than Ashe, and was just as representative of his era.I´d put them ex aqueo.

I miss Sedgman and Trabert in the 50´s.

Hoad was also one of the best player in the 50´s, before injuries got to him.Santana was better than the 1960´s version of Ashe, at least in terms of GS wins.
