And if you let me add two categories:

There is no other than Federer for both

3. Robredo but Kohlschreiber was lurking (results)
9. Had to double check, but yeah Roddick (results)

Thanks for actually quoting the categories first. Can't follow the others.

Paradorn is a good pick in a tough category. I also considered Philippoussis for 7 but gave up on the question. He's a good pick considering Haas made a final in the Grand Slam Cup which is what the WTF became.

My number 1 (never won a slam) is miloslav Mecir. I agree regarding Nadal for item 6.

For multiple Masters, yes. Maybe even for having never won a Slam. He leads the h2h against Nalbandian, won more titles...and yet against the big 4 in a Slam final, I'd still be tempted to pick DN.

1. Mecir easily

2. Davydenko I think

3-4. don't know everyone in Open era history to make sure all candidates are considered

5. Kafelnikov easily, 2 majors but 0-5 in masters finals IIRC

6. Nadal obviously

7. dunno

8. JMDP as of now (since I can't put Wawrinka twice)

9. Roddick by overall career, Roche and Cash for peak level

10. Vilas (officially), otherwise Wawr

11. Wawrinka easily

12. El Aynaoui seems like a good choice. AO QF x2, USO QF x2, RG 4R x2, epicdom in 2003 AO/USO with epic wins over Hewitt, Novak and Moya and an all-time epic loss to Roddick; made 16 tour level finals (just checked, didn't know that - that's quite a lot), winning 5.

What are your options?

I think some of your categories are self explenatory in my view, like the categories (2), 3,4,7 and 12. If those players were any good and memorable they would have been more successful than that. I mean there have been tons of good players who never made it to a Slam Final, so what does that say about those players who never even reached the semis and QF or didn't even qualify for a WTF? Just saying.

Mine would be

1. Leconte
2. Henman
7. there are probably too many
6. Courier
9. Stich/Chang/Krajicek
10. Stich
11. Wawrinka

Lots of regency bias in this thread, what a surprise.

1)Mecir or Philippoissous
2) going for an unusual pick here - Chesnokov. Partly because he was so close to a final at 89 RG and would have had a very good shot at beating Edberg.
3) Arazi was the most talented player I've seen who didn't reach a SF. I wonder how he would have fared had he played guga in 97 RF final. Also, amritraj was considered a future slam champ earlier in his career, but he never made a SF, He reached 2 QF's before the age of 20. Ashe wrote in a book in 73 that he thought he would have a better career than Connors or Borg(sort of shows how straight S&V was so highly regarded among the tennis world back then and how unusual those 2 were relative to other players)
4) Kent Carlsson was the highest ranked player to not make a QF pre Zverev. Since his career was cut short by injury, might be unfair to list him, but I still can't believe he never made a QF.
5) Kafelnikov
12)Washington, Krishnan, Escude

Unlike majority here  I will be objective and nominate Roddick for the biggest one Slam wonder instead for category 9.

:p
Yeah a man who made 5 slam finals and lost 4 times against the GOAT is a “one slam wonder”

Roddick should have at least 5 slams but Fedr was born and ruined everything for him.
At least he knows how he feels, right? @Red Rick

Exactly. No need for quotation marks.

Praise Lord Fedr for saving us all!

And by the way, if you said that same thing for Murray, the old hypothetical experts would have flooded you by now. But because of their phony Roddick sympathy they will approve this post.

:D
