So basically we give our opinions up until 1990 (overtime). And you have to say the best player of each surface for a year. Here is my opinion.

Slow hard Roddick for 2010? He didnt even make the semis of the Australian Open so no way.

Likewise Roger not even making the U.S Open final excludes him from fast hard in 2010. Has to be Rafa just for his U.S Open final performance alone.

Wow cool, I agree 2015 is all surface for Nole. No one would normally have that since no one has won the CYGS. But I think Novak's overall clay season and level was better than Wawa's. With that said the counter-argument would be that obviously he would have traded all his acheivements at the clay masters for the RG win. (Even more at the time, since he hadn't won it yet)

Fair enough.
I though 2010 Fast Hard for Fed because he won Cinci, Finalist at Toronto and Semis at the Open. He was the most consistent. But Nadal it is.
So who gets 2010 Slow Hard, I thought Roddick because he won Miami and final at Indian Wells.

2016:

Federer. Roddick's Australian Open showing is too weak to get slow hard court IMO. He would have had to win more than 1 Masters to have any case, and he couldnt even beat old Ljubicic at Indian Wells.

Maybe we can just have it as default that the best player was the 1 who won the corresponding slam on that surface. And if we think that is NOT the case, explain why.

Not a fan of breaking surfaces into separate categories tbh. Like in 2009 for example, despite not winning a slam on HC I think Federer was the best overall with both finals (and the real slam ;) ).

you mean splitting up slow and fast hard?

well they are different enough that there are 4 separate "mini seasons" imo with 4 separate slams. If you want to add a * that Federer was the best overall on hard, that would be okay ;)

Did he win a hard court Masters that year? I dont recall but if he didnt I dont think it could be him when Nadal has both a slam and a Masters. Even if he did I would probably go with Nadal for a slam win over Fed in the final, a semi (losing to the same guy as Fed did in the final, even if a blowout), and a Masters title, when neither won the WTF.

Fed won Cincy. Despite Nadal having decent results in the later half of 2009 his play just wasn't great. Federer was close enough to him at the AO for his superior USO result to be a factor - across both slams Federer's level of play was clearly the highest.

Del Potro served him up a Swiss Pancake in that 5th set though

Perhaps but I tend to go with results first. If it were just on a feeling I would pick Nadal for best on clay in 2009 since you know he was really the best clay courter in the world still at that moment, even if Fed ended 2009 with the best results. And by the same logic probably Djokovic over Nadal on clay in 2011. Since I go with results I would pick Federer for best on clay in 2009 and Nadal in 2011 though.

Plus IMO Nadal was the top hard courter of early 2009 and Del Potro of late 2009 (only last Canada to Murray due to fatigue in the final) so Federer wasnt the top in any part of the year IMO. If I picked someone else it would probably be Del Potro. DP outperformed by Fed and Nadal at the WTF too.
