Which ranking system best reflects who are the best players in the world, not who have had the best recent results.

I agree the DOT is definitely better in that situation, but it isn't practical b/c not all players are playing at their best at the same time.

The WTA rankings. A heavily pregnant Kim Clijsters is not the seventh best player in the world.

So she won't be walking on court then will she.

I believe DOT are a good reflection of playing standard.

After Kim has given birth and if she returns to the game (and walks onto court) I believe these ratings will have current levels of play about right. I think she will still be a top 10 player and not as she would be seen in the WTA rankings outside the top 100.

Lindsay Davenport is another good example. Lindsay is currently ranked at 72because the WTA series seems to volatile. I think I'm closer with 10th.

Similarly when Mauresmo gets over her problems I believe I shall be closer to her standard of play than the official rankings show etc

I hope this helps explain better what I was driving at.

Thanks for the post

It's not practical to now. It's better as a measure of long term success not annual.

Thanks Ossric. That's good feedback and certainly food for thought.

If I undertsand correctly you are proposing separate indicators for long term success (i.e. rating a players greatness) as opposed to the current standard.

Intesresting. I'll certainly think about that. To date I have operated off the idea that a peak current is an indicator to greatness and the DOT ratings have been geared to that. However, I may now need to consider, a rating with lighter weighting for the present to indicate peak and therefore career success and heavier weightings for the present. Hmmmm!

Wta...

Nice idea and the concept may work if players were ranked on their performance over say the last several years. But you stated if all players were fit and walked on the court today. With the exception of Lindsay and Kim they are all healthy and we have seen their results. I love Maria but she is not the #2 in the world right now as the DOT has her ranked.

She looked good to me at the EYC. Who do you think is currently better apart from Henin?
