Best Setup For Wilson Ultra Tour

I'll be taking shipment of a brand new Wilson Ultra Tour tomorrow. I've read enough stuff on here to make my eyes bleed but I have yet to see a thread dedicated to the ultimate setup for this players frame.
Fortunately I am a racquet stringer and know that the first string job should be considered temporary as the strings seat themselves into the grommet strips. I'm thinking of a gut/poly hybrid for the second string job.
I anyone has suggestions on a string setup, I want to hear it.

The specs seem almost ripe for customization. I typically play with a frame in the 11.8oz. range so I'll be considering a leather grip, some silicone in the handle and some lead in the hoop.
If one reads the TW review for this frame, it would seem the playtesters see power as the one drawback.

I'd like to know what other folks have done to the frame to coax more power and stability from the frame. I also wouldn't mind hearing from people who have moved on to other frames and why.

I've been experimenting with this racquet as well. The main attraction to this racquet is the feel and control.
If you don't like 18/20 frames and the control they bring I definately wouldn't recommend this frame.
For me, the biggest draw back is actually it's lack of mass and would also make this same observation to the Prince Phantoms, Dunlop Srixon CX 2.0 Revo Tour and Volkl V Srense10 Tour. All these racquets are too light in stock form and as a consequence require customisation with lead added, a leather grip and possibly softer strings at lower tensions if you want it to be more lively.
With the Wilson I tried some lead under the handle and a leather grip and I actually found that it altered the soft comfortable feel and I was experiencing vibrations that I did not like so I'm going to try leading it again but putting back the original grip to see how it goes.
To be honest, all in all, I'm just sticking to my C10''s as it's got everything I need without having to adjust it too much. It's got a leather grip added but it's very comfortable and is a lively frame with its 16/19 string pattern. I'm also very happy with my Angell TC 97 330/305, Yonex V Core 330 and PK Q Plus Tour 325. These racquets are ready to go with nothing to do.

Greetings Tennis Fans. I've set up the Ultra Tour in the following manner. The stock racquet weighed 11.38 strung. I used "Thin Blend" by Forten (Aramid/kevlar with Sweet 17) at 50/54lbs. I used this blend to seat the strings into the virgin grommets. I consider them disposable because they are cheap. If you string a new racquet at 60lbs, the strings will loosen a bit as they settle into the plastic in all 76 holes. I can't say how much but its noticeable if you string one old frame and a new identical frame side by side with exactly the same string and tension.
I thought about a leather grip and had one ready to go. I decided instead to add .3oz. of tungsten putty under trap door in the handle. Not much room in there as there is foam in the handle. I then put in a vibration dampener and a white Yonex supergrap over the stock grip. The finished product is 11.83. oz. I don't know the swing weight yet.
It sounds silly, but I'll know if I like it within an hour of hitting.
I don't know how this is going to go. Stay tuned.

whatever floats your boat...
i have never run into a seating issue with new strings, even full n gut...
seen a whole more issues with old grommets
Yup. Just string 2# higher the first time. That’s enough to account for the tension drop for new grommets to seat.

My take on Ultra Tour is lead on entire loop and throat, then as much lead under handle as rubber band testing dictates (add heavy rubber bands on the handle in various distributions to "preview" extra weight, then add lead under grip once optimal distribution is found)

Natural Gut / Poly works very well to maximize comfort and touch...I personally prefer 18g poly strung with proportional method for a bit more spin.

I think this racquet could be setup with nat.gut..
I got fb.multis onit now, feels good..
the tight pattern and the high flex, makes it challenging to dial in with polys, "for me",,
I tried fb, poly, too lifeless
I tried poly/syn.gut, did not feel good,,

I ended up with fb.multi to help the low power, and its almost perfect,, still tweeking the lead..

like the pic,, but daammmnnn,
thats alot of lead,,
whats the racquet weight now?
bet its got alot of plowthrough now.. :)

When you start out with handle light 11.3oz racket that's usually what it looks like by the time you get to 12oz 6-7 points headlight. Swing-weight in the mid 340s.

This is me hitting with it (for the first time):

Holey Moley. That's a sh*tload of lead. I'd need a suitcase with wheels just to get it to the court!!
I just received some 19gauge Poly and some 18 gauge gut.
I currently play with an 18x20 pattern and I need a higher launch angle.
Gut mains with poly crosses?

Hitting Result.
Groundstrokes
(9). Pinpoint accuracy and very comfortable even with kevlar/aramid mains. Good spin, good launch angle for a 18x20. penetrating shots but not speedy super heavy shots. I can hit flatter or hit with enough topspin to hit some pretty easy topspin lobs. Does not generate power on its own. On softly hit high balls hit to me, I have to really increase racquet head speed above where I am normally comfortable.

Volleys(8.5) Good targeting. Solid, no flutter. Good directional control but no easy power again. You gotta lean into them. No simple blocking.

Serve(8.2) After playing with a 105" this is so easy to swing over my head and generate speed. Very accurate. Takes spin better than I thought it would. Can flatten out balls and really spank them but loss of control evident. Kick serves are decent but medium high bounce.

Touch (9) I'd call it a scalpel compared to my point of reference with my modified 300G.

Slice (8). Nothing to write home about but capable in more experienced hands perhaps.

Comfort & Control (9.3) This is the outstanding feature to me and I play with a 57RA.

Power(7.7) If you have long strokes you can mash the ball pretty well but if you get caught off-balance and hope to poke it over, forget it.

Paint. 6. I swear it came brand new with a ding in the paint.

Modification. If I could modify ONE thing, I'd make it a 27,3 length for more plow through.

Kevlar mains are bad for slicing - natural gut main will let the ball dig deeper into the string-bed and give you better response.

As far not generating power on it's own...that's why you need that mass in the head. While light UT shoots a deep flat ball but when you add spin it falls short and doesn't do the damage, but as you add the weight topspin shots get higher, deeper and faster.

Putting X amount of lead on certain areas of this racquet is completely useless information. These frames are generally terrible out of the factory and the ones I have modified/matched varied immensely in the amount and placement of lead, up to maybe a foot of 1/4". That being said once you get them right they play well. I have a few setup at 337g/313mm/325sw that play nicely. I have done a few at 345g/335sw that have played great as well.

Hi Mark, i hope you are enjoying the racquet.
I have tried dozens of strings in this racquet, go through a lot of strings. Thought i would share my experience and maybe help you along...

My UT setup is at 12.3oz, 31.4 HL. I have 8-strips of lead tape at 3 and 9 o'clock - 4" long double layered equally on each side. 2.5 grams of lead under number at 12 o'clock. Leather grip, silicone in handle.
I am a solid 4.5 that plays with descent spin off the baseline. I like to come to the net as much as i can and play a lot of doubles. I posted a video on the Ultra Tour thread as point of reference for playing style and swing speed.
Stating this because a lot of people state string recommendations without weight or tension and it makes a huge difference. Hopefully this context helps you figure out where you'd like to be.

My tension hovers between 48-50 lbs.
Favorite setups so far are hybrids and my theory/personal preference is that this relatively flexible racquet plays best with a crisper string. I just prefer the feel of crisper strings in general, and this racquet just seems to take them better.

Poly used:
Tour Bite 17g. 50/49 lbs. - favorite full poly setup. for me, this setup is just great everywhere. It breaks or i cut it out around 5/6 hours.
AluPower 125 @ 50 to 53 lbs. - great setup. not quite the bite as TB, and i like the feel and volleying with TB better.
Hawk touch @ 50lbs
lynx 17 yellow @ 54
Hyper G 50-52lbs. - great string, similar to TB, better tension maintenance. I preferred this string prior to switching to UT, but this just didn't gel quite like the TB for me in this one.
Revolve 17 - 53lbs. Too muted for my liking. went dead too quickly.
AluPower Rough - 53lbs.

All of the above tried in hybrids: NRG 17 is my go to multi, also NXT Power 17 or Origin 17, OG Micro 16 synthetic cross. I prefer the poly mains, but have run them all both ways. NRG is my go to poly main. I have also tried all of the poly's with gut mains and crosses.

Tour bite 17 / Micro 16 = Favorite setup to date. 49lbs on the TB mains. 46 on the micro 16 cross. This is a great setup for me. Currently experimenting different combinations with this setup between 45-49 lbs. This is the setup i am going into the season with.

- TB/Gut and Alu/Gut are awesome, all 17g. I preferred the feel of the wilson 17g gut over 16g. options in the cross. And prefer the wilson over the VS personally.
- Gut/Lynx is awesome, also liked Gut/TB, Gut/Alu.
- NRG or NXT Power make great multi mains, not so great crosses... lasts me 45 minutes. Gut lasts me 2-3x longer in crosses than multi.
- Multi main setups i have liked: NRG/Alu Rough, NRG/TB17, NRG/Alu125, NRG/Lynx.

Happy hitting!

Mine were 301g/6 points head light, and 306g/8 points headlight. I put 5g of tungsten putty under the butt cap if the lighter one to match. I usually play with a 3/8, nut these are both 1/4 so I use 2 Wilson Pro overgrips and a Pro's Pro vib control dampener on each. Finally, they are both strung with black Volkl Cyclone 18L at 45 pounds. The final weigh in is 330g each.

Mind if I ask where you added the 4g of lead?

FYI: I haven't had any paint issues either. I don't know if this had anything to do with it, but I used some automotive products on it before I applied any lead, or even hit with them.

I use head protection tape that extends the entire length of the bumper and an extra 1 .5 inch on each side..

Wow... I didn't realize that head tape weighed that much! Then again, I've never weighed it! lol That's actually a pretty good idea! You don't have to worry about working with lead, and it's way cheaper than tungsten tape, that's for sure!

I experimented a lot with mine, but settled on just a Wilson leather grip + 2 Wilson pro overgrips. No lead added. Tourna Big Hitter Blue Rough 16 on the cross @ 59 and babolat synthetic gut 16 @ 57 on the cross. Lots of control on all strokes. I play 4.0 and play matches with several 4.5 friends. In my opinion, as long as your footwork is good, you don’t need all that more mass added to the frame. Let kenetics work for you.

I just had the first hitting session with mine, I loved it, it is on the under powered side by a lot and brings to the table so much control, you get from it what you put in.

I'd like to get a little bit of power and plow thru, what placement of lead tape would you recommend?

Just got mine last week from TW. Switched the grip out for Wilson natural leather, put on an overgrip and added 1 strip of Wilson lead at 3:00 and 9:00. This gives ,me a weight of 339gm on mine.

My usual frames are the 2014 PureStrike 18x20, with similar set up and average weight of 345gms.

First hit was today. Definitely less power than the PureStrikes, but much more stable against big shots, this frame doesn't flutter or get pushed around. On the other hand, definitely felt a little underpowered today and a little slower (despite lower weight) than the PureStrikes. Not sure if I want to move the lead up 10/2 9bump the power up a little) or down 7/4 (move the balance down). This frame seems to be like RFAutograph, in that it is stroke/set up sensitive but rewards when you do it well, and not as sensitive as the RFauto.

Been a long time Wilson user and was torn between this frame and the blade 18x20 cv, ultimately choose this one because it looks like the Wilson sting I grew hitting and I enjoyed the demo a little more.

BTW strings: Solinco Hyperg 18 at 50

Try going down another 5-7 lbs the next time you string it. Makes quite a difference, and you won't lose any control. I have Volkl Cyclone 18L in one of mine @45 and I may go down a little more. My other one is strung with Big Ace Micro in the mains @45 and OGSM 18 in the crosses @48. That setup increased the power even more and gives you a little more feel.

Wilson needs to give American players what they want...16 by 20 UT.
The number of 18 main frames they have released are few, so players miss what they are used to.

I went to yonex for that pattern, switched from Wilson... ,, but now, yonex is going back to 16/19s,

serves and volleys are my best shots with this racquet now..

Played match later in the day, used the UltraTour as noted above. 1st time serving with the racket, was very nice. After the first game, I found my swing. More kick and more consistency. At the net (only 3 times) was very comfortable and nice feeling. But on ground strokes and return of serve, the racket shined. USTA, 6-3 6-3. Slight hiccup at 0-2 in second and then rolled. Really enjoyed the frame and this set up more... I think some of the morning issues with hit were that I am just so used to old set up/frame

Just ordered my Ultra Tour, Wilson leather grip, tungsten tape w/ full bed of Babalot VS Team 17G gut.

Anyone out there playing full bed of gut? Looking for tension recommendations. Was playing Wilson Champions choice at 47# not sure where to adjust for full gut bed.

Still loving my frame. Ordered second one, Frame A is 339gm and B is 340. With the exact same grip and weighting... so I got lucky on QC (2nd frame ordered 2 months later).

I have one with RPM Blast 18g at 48lbs. Amazing spin and control, but feels much stiffer than the Hyper-g 18g at 50lbs. Will try dropping the RPM down to 44, and if I don't love it will just give up a little control an spin for the plusher Hyper-G. It is funny bc in string comparison they should be closer.

I have been tinkering with the Ultra on and off for a year. I initially went with two 8 inch strips at 12 and a leather grip. It was nice but didn't completely gel with it. I recently been tinkering with it again and went with 10 grams at 3 & 9 and a leather grip with also about 7 grams of blu tack in the butt cap. Also strung it up with Klip Legend Natural Gut and Luxilon Timo 1.10 in the crosses. I have never played a better setup for 18 x 20 players frames than Natural Gut (17g) with Timo.

All in all I much prefer the weight at 3 & 9 and the overall response with Natural Gut/Timo is just silky smooth. Can't recall the base weight I started with, I think it was 300g, but I am at 348g/32cm balance with overgrip and Luxilon dampener.

Stiffer off the stringer for both setups? Can't compare to older stingjob.

RPM blast should be softer than Hyper-G and would lose more tenion too.

EDIT: oook I see how it could be softer. Hyper-G cheats on their guages - 18g is 1.15mm (1.20 for 17g) while RPM Blast 18g is 1.20mm

A number of the manufacturers do that same thing..
I stopped using their numbering system and use my own, with 16g=1.30, 17g=1.25, 1.24=17L etc,,,,,

gosen, luxilon and tecnifibre are another of the manufacturers im talking about..
