Best tennis match ever played

recently : Wawrinka vs Gasquet 2013 RG 6-7(5), 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 8-6 ! Wawrinka apparently hit over 100 winners to win.

HC - AO 05 SF.

Clay - Rome 05/06 F, partial towards 05 because two pure claycourters played that match and not much choking if I recall correctly. Also RG 13 Wawrinka vs Gasquet and RG 11 SF.

Grass -Wim 07. 08 tops them both in terms of drama, actually 08 tops everything in terms of drama, the atmosphere in the 4th set breaker and 5th set was surreal but Wim 07 is the greatest grass court match ever played.

Only Nadal and Djokovic have the potential to create that much of a backstory/drama in a match right now. And when they're gone I can't imagine seeing a match with huge drama/backstory for a long time sadly.

Sure but Wim 08 F drama, atmosphere will never ever be repeated. It felt as though the world had come to a standstill, the establishment had crumbled. Here was Roger Federer, the greatest player ever trying to prevent Nadal from breaching non-clay slams and the latter doing everything possible to make it happen and knowing deep down that if it happened it would be over for Fed's 04-07 like dominance.
Epic and stuff of legend. Nothing comes close and nothing ever will IMO( Besides maybe a Nole Nadal RG F with Nole winning).

Since many full-length matches are on you tube these days, I decided to watch them all this year. I can think of 5 matches myself, but probably I'm forgetting a few.

So I would like to hear other peoples views on what they think is the best match ever played. Both drama and quality of the tennis should be a facor IMO.
I think the Agassi-Blake QF match US Open 2005 was amazing!! They both were smacking the ball incredibly hard! It certainly was high quality stuff (both the full match and the summary are available on youtube, summary; (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VASqsQFovW0)
The Nadal-Verdasco match SF AO 2009 was also memorable to me. Then off course we had both the Wimbledon Final of 2008 (Federer-Nadal) with plenty of drama and the Wimbledon final of 2009 (Federer-Roddick). I think the US open SF 2011 Federer-Nole was also sick!!

So what do you think?

Tennis Fanatic 070,

It's hard to say. But I think it was the final of the 1966 US Pro: The arguably two true GOATs (Laver and Rosewall) met in a match praised by Bud Collins until today very highly, even more than the more famous 1972 Dallas final of the two small Aussies...

Laver beat Rosewall in that classic 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 8-10, 6-3. It was played on the grass courts of the Longwood Criquet Club. Both players at their peak (Rosewall perhaps a shade after his).

There's so many but recently the Del Potro Djokovic 2013 Wimbledon semi was one slugfest with so many great shots.

Borg McEnroe 1980, a masterpiece.

Great choice.
Budge vs von Cramm at the 1937 Davis Cup and Gonzales vs Pasarell at 1969 Wimbledon should also be considered.

Old DC didn't get any better than McEnroe over Wilander '82...6'22" worth of tennis going JMac's way 8-6 in the fifth with the no-TB format throughout the match (9-7 first set, 15-17 third set)!

The two greatest went down in 2013:

#2 Simon/Monfils, AO R3
#1 Murray/Ferrer, Miami F

Instead of the exhos, those two matches should have been run on a continuous loop on World Tennis Day.

We're not worthy of seeing such breathtaking shot-making all on one day.

For sheer "edge of your seat" entertainment then it has to be Borg vs. McEnroe in the 1981 Wimbledon final.

McEnroe's destruction of Connors in the 1984 Wimbledon final was a sight to behold. That was probably the best display of tennis by one person in one match in the Open Era.
