Someday, I'd like to be a snow bird and was wondering what the best place in the US for tennis, mostly free tennis in Jan & Feb is? Good weather, pick-up games & etc. Thanks.

1st couple choices have to be Florida and Texas.
I live near San Francisco, and would pick that area, if the rains don't come to flood Moses this year.

Unfortunately pickup tennis is not as prevalent as pickup basketball. It takes time to build a network of players in almost any area. 2 places I've played that do have decent pickup tennis are the public tennis center in Tucson and the public tennis park in Palm Springs.

Drought years, there is no rain and no wind, so every day is sunny and light sub 7mph breeze, blue skies, and 60 degree days, 48 degree nights.
Super rainy El Nino, you might get 10 days of rain, so wind during those 10 days, each month. That leaves at least 15 days for dry weather tennis.
Which is it gonna be? Who knows. Most winters, I can play tennis about the same amount of days as summer, and temps only 10 degrees cooler.

As you well know, only a few courts are ready made for pickup tennis and only at certain days and times.
You also know most old fart's play mornings, and younger better players play after 4PM, with some exceptions of course.
In the City, Dolores Park, 8 courts, is good for weekend 4-4.5 doubles starting around 9-2, but you better be good at doubles.
Golden Gate Park is first choice, but not great on weekends, because courts tend to get reserved for the working folkes. Weekdays are better, around 11-3, then they get inundated with high school tennis team players.
Marina has two set's of 2 courts. Mostly weekend pickup doubles, starting early around 9-2. On weekdays, they're deserted until 4PM, then it's hit or miss.
Julius Kahn, near Aquello and the Presidio (Pacific) had the highest level of pickup tennis in the city, weekend king of the hill doubles mid day, and weekdays after 4PM.
Too bad City College of San Francisco (8 courts), and SF State (18 courts)are now closed to public play during weekdays. Weekends, you'd have to check out the scene.
Dupont, on 32nd and Clement, have 3 courts, is the practice grounds for Washington High's JV tennis team, but has very high level local players, usually showing up late weekday afternoons.
Best to have wheels, so you can drive to Berkeley's San Pablo Park, Mill Valley's Boyle Park, and San Rafael's Albert's Field for sure thing 4.0+ pickup tennis every afternoon and weekend mornings. About a 14 mile drive at most, from SF.

For indoor courts, there is San Francisco Tennis Club, South of Market, with 8 indoor courts, and 16 outdoor courts on the roof, but it's membership only, and expensive.
Cal Club at Bush/Steiner is so exclusive you need member sponsorship to enter, but it's partially inclosed.
Mt.Tam Racket Club is in CorteMadera, also expensive, as all club tend to be.
Berkeley Tennis Club is most expensive, and outdoor courts.
LA would have the best weather, cool, little rain, but has smog to be believed and vast distances to be covered with no public transportation.

Surprised there's no love for San Diego.
