Both of these guys are winding down and I'm interested how their career will be viewed. Berdych on the surface may seem far ahead but at the end of the day the margins aren't that big and there is some perspective to be had.

Slams
Berdych has the unique distinction of making a Semifinal at every Slam, Tsonga has 2 each at 3. Both men have 1 Final, Berdych has 1 more SF. Spread in runs is interesting with Berdych only having made it to quarters or later at the USO on two occasions while Tsonga 3 at 3 Slams and 5 in Australia. Total Quarters or better: Berdych 17>15 Tsonga

Masters
Tsonga 2>1 Berdych Titles
Both at 4 Finals
Berdych 19>9 SF or better

WTF
Both men have only been past the group stage once with Tsonga having the lone Final run.

500 Level
Berdych a 3>2 Title mark

Rankings
Berdych career high is #4 while Tsonga career high is #5.
Berdych had 7 consecutive YE in the Top 10, with 6 of those being #7 or #6 spread evenly.
Tsonga had 6 YE Top 10 finishes with 3 at #10 and 2 at #6.

As you can see it's pretty damn close except for three distinctions. Tsonga has the additional Masters title and WTF Final, he won the Masters titles against Federer and Nalbandian and lost the WTF to Federer. Berdych's lone Masters crown came beating Stepanek and Ljubicic. One more thing is how Berdych's only Masters title came early in his career before he was even Top 20. You could say Berdych under-performed because he then made 18 Semifinal runs or better without a single title which is the 2nd disparity between the two. The final key difference goes in Berdych's favor of seasons having essentially one more Top 10 year but he was better than just #10 as he ended #6 three times to Tsonga's 2 and then 3 more times as #7 where Tsonga has 3 at #10. Collectively you can't argue with Thomas having the better consistency but Tsonga clearly has the better I guess you say "clutch" ability by getting 1 more Masters against stiff competition, his 2 Masters losses were to Federer and Novak and he lost the WTF in 3 sets to Roger again. Very hard indeed.

For signature wins at Slams, both men have them.

Tsonga
2008 AO Nadal
2010 AO Djokovic
2011 WMB Federer (0-2 down)
2013 FO Federer

Berdych
2010 WMB Federer, Djokovic
2012 USO Federer
2015 AO Nadal

Head to Head: 8-5 Berdych, 1-0 Tsonga at Slams, 1-1 at WTF

Berdych is more consistent but Tsonga is a better/more talented player.

GS: Both men have 1 Final. But Berdych has 1 more GS SF and was closer to make a 2nd GS Final than Tsonga (lose to Soderling in 5 at RG 2010). Edge to Berdych
Master 1000: Tsonga has 1 more tittle.
WTF: Edge to Tsonga.
Total tittles: 16 vs 13.

I am going with Tsonga by a hair, mostly due to Tsonga was more of a threat to the big 4 IMO.

I never realized just how similar they are. Fascinating post.

Let's not forget that Jo's 2nd Masters title was insane. At the 2014 Roger Cup he beat Djokovic>Murray>Federer, one of the rarest feats in tennis history. So when comparing their Masters history, lets give Tsonga a little more credit than "he has 1 more title than Berdych." That 2nd title is worth more than your average Masters.

I voted Tsonga because I saw that run live and because he has the WTF final and some of his Slam runs would have been better if not for matchups. Plus the 0-2 comeback against Fed on grass.

Tsonga had Murray on the ropes at Wimbledon 2016 (he should have won the first set to be honest), and at RG 2015 SF if we reversed their BP conversion rate then Tsonga would be in the Final instead of Stan (he wasted 16/17 break point).

Hard to say. Berdych maxed out his potential. while i feel like tsonga still had potential to do more. especially if he ever fixed his backhand.

The entertainment and flare that Tsonga plays with and provides the viewer with is on an entirely different level than Berdych. Berdych has the personality of a moth. I know this bc I watched him hit up close for like 5 minutes once and fall asleep during all his matches.

TSONGA ARMY!

Neither could match Ferrer for consistency though.

Berdych has made 8 million dollars more as a professional tennis player

When in doubt go by the thing that buys the cars, houses, and hot wife

Tsonga's seem more fun from other photos and video and wears less makeup. If we judge Berdych personally his gf probably the same blandness. They're both millionaires it's not like Tsonga lives in a hut.

Very close but I'd give the edge to Tsonga based largely on his Toronto 2014 win, which was very impressive.

Overall, Berdych has been a bit more consistent but Tsonga has displayed the higher level. The second masters win clinches it.

Tsonga's woman is a natural beauty, she glows. Berdych is married to Barbie, so he must be Ken. Ken Berdych.

They both going to play for couple of more years.

I think it would become a norm for quite a few ATP players to play into late 30's...

I'd go with this. Really nothing between them, but if I had to choose, it will be Tsonga.

A very well laid out case for both sides. I voted for Tsonga though for the same reason that a few other people have mentioned, he had the more threatening game to the top players and had a higher peak level. Plus with the WTF final and that remarkable 2014 Masters title, I think it becomes a no-brainer. Even though it's very close.
