Better for tennis if Chung beats Federer

This is very true. Many people want to see Federer win more slams

but these people are also the same who complain about the new gen being garbage.

Tennis will lose popularity when the big 4 retire anyway so a changing of the guard would be better than tennis simply becoming less popular.
^ +1.

I want Fed to win, I'm not a diehard bandwagoner but the man is feeling good and grooving so if he's on it he's on it. He's still standing at the top for a reason while other players have succumbed to injuries or other personal factors especially at the start of the year when the AO is always a goody bag full of surprises. If the nextgen can't seem to keep afloat uptop against Roger its either still a work in progress, have no variety in their game or just cant physically and mentally keep up.

The other giants are falling to injury, a mix of factors is to blame, but as its known tennis recently is becoming a myriad of prone injuries from overuse of the body and very little rest in-between as well as training.

I also want Chung to win, he's got a great game and his head is on right and he's motivated. He's been playing fantastic since the start of the tournament.

Sandgren has done a hell of a job getting this far as the only american male left(in singles speaking) and I hope he can succeed as well, but if it comes down to it I'm gunning for a Chung Federer final

I think the old guard are very popular and transcend the sport so until someone else steps up and makes it happen, it's probably better for the game that Fedalovic keep winning. I can't see who will step up though?

Zverev - can't play slam tennis
Thiem - myth
El Shapo - has potential but is still young
Kyrgios - brilliant at times but inconsistent, can go missing mentally, reminds me of Safin
Chung - I think Federer will have him covered easily and a healthy in-form Djokovic would beat him at his own game
Dimitrov - seems to lose his way just when you think he's going to put it all together

I'm very much enjoying Chung's breakout. I'll be rooting for him to send Fed home. Time for some new blood!

Yeah - you guys should chill a bit - Chung beat a severely hampered Novak. Chung could sense his opponents level, like any good player can. And It gave him hope, it helped him calm down and not be intimidated, and it helped him him think clearly. And so he was able to move into the court and take slower balls and paint the lines with a lot more courage ... all because he could tell he was playing a guy he could beat.

But that was not Novak Djokovic anywhere near his best that he beat.

Novak at his best would have destroyed that kid last night.

Yep! Chung is a Djokovic clone - a fully fit Djoker would have shown him how that style of tennis is really played. I hope he gets fit and returns soon.

Butthurt OP aside, I'd really like to see Chung face off against Roger. Roger's variety and smarts against Chung's fearless baseline game. That would make for a great semi!

Chung's a great story. Tennis to fix his vision deficiencies? Love it.

My only fear is that his success may embolden the ATP. What I mean by this is that they may feel that just one YEC Lite is not enough.

As the heads of Federer fans explode, I will explain.
Roger Federer is 36. He's now one of the oldest players in the ATP. He won 2 grand Slams last year. He's (or will likely be) the last man of the Big 4 to remain fit. Murray has likely lost his battle to injury, and Djokovic is fighting the tide. Nadal is still dominating, but he's becoming increasingly inconsistent and injury-prone. Not a recipe for longevity.
A generation of 30+ players should not be favored to win titles anymore. Even the players who were in the past (Connors, Agassi, Laver) didn't win majors this long, and were few and far between. There is no new generation stepping up yet to take the mantle, which is why the ATP is desperately trying to prop the young players up. Dimitrov and Zverev are the only guys who have really done much, and Zverev still hasn't made it past the 4R of a Slam.
The Big 3 are all legends. I still admire and root for Djokovic. The hype will always be there until they retire.
But at this age that's what they should be. Legends. The fact that they're still around only adds to the mythos around them, but it also says that the sport isn't developing. The tour, and TTW, have descended into a grim uncertainty about the future of tennis. For the first time in tennis, there is no Grand Slam winner in their prime. Cilic is arguably an exception, but it's unlikely to see him bag another, unless he makes another shock title run (AO18 might be his last chance). Wawrinka and Murray are fading. Djokovic and Nadal's V8 engines are getting worn out, the price paid for brute-forcing their way through Federer's empire. Del Potro is unpredictable and a nostalgic favorite, but the injuries and age have taken a toll on even him. And Federer....even Superman ages.

Life must go on. So must tennis.
If Chung beats Federer, that's a step in the right direction. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see Federer get injured or something. But the Big 3 aren't getting any better at this age. The first conqueror was Stan, who showed the big 4 that they were beatable. But he was one man, also in his late career. A new generation, one made up of younger, more consistent, more driven players must rise.

A win for Hyeon is a win for tennis.
I agree in some ways what you're saying....however, if Chung gives Federer a good run for his money and the Swiss Maestro goes on to play for #20, that would be sooo epic and way more of a draw card for the final than if Chung won and goes on to the final. Think about it...which final would be more appetising; Chung vs Edmund or Federer vs Cilic? Chung will get his chances, it's enough to keep interest going knowing that the nextgen (Chung/Zverev/Kyrgios/Shapo) are far better than the lostgen (Dimitrov/Raonic/Nishi/Goffin).

Sure, when Chung earns it. I'd rather not see wall-ball tennis winning Slams again like the Hewitt era. Even Nadal at his most defensive would turn on a dime to offense when the opportunity came because he had weapons. Chung just has unflagging retrieval skills.

Love Federer but hope Chung wins. He’s been playing brilliantly. Hope he breaks through. All it takes is one or two big wins and the rest can be history. We need more championship caliber players in tennis.

I thought he hit a lot of winners, and some amazing “gets”. What’s not to enjoy about his tennis? I don’t think it was wall-ball. He is playing tennis like both Nadal with his retrieval, and Djokovic when he’s trading ground strokes. Nice to see a new face.

It is hilarious to see Djoko fanbase cheering for Fed defeat since the last 2 days.
I mean... I enjoy Fed's tennis and he's a fine enough guy. But the insufferable fen fans that make up 95% of TTW pretty much preclude any other fan base rooting for him to win. How can I possibly root for an outcome that will lead to 5 months of "20!" and "Fed is the greatest athlete ever!" Threads?

Those are my *least* favorite aspects of Nadal and Djokovic's games.

I understand, but those attributes got them to where they are. I don’t think a player can win at higher level with just defense. Chung’s forehand actually looks potent and was a good weapon against Djokovic, not just his backhand or his court coverage.

Fed will not be on scene from Apr- June and the talk will all be about 11 RG after 2 weeks from now

And how do you think this place looked when. Djok reaches every final from AO15 to AO 16 ?

What's the point of looking at that match like it was some kind of a positive litmus for Chung's game? Djokovic's elbow kept him from keeping his balls in the court and using his serve effectively. You want a perfect example of Chung's game, look to the Zverev match where he broke Sascha's will with unrelenting retrieval. It was interesting, I guess, from a baseline lover's perspective but come on, Zverev had more winners and aces in that match.

I want Fed to vulture as many titles to cement his resume.

The nextgen can, and should, learn from the losses to ATG’s the next couple of years. I’d be happy with:

2018
Freddy Bear: AO/Wimbledon
Young Gun: RG/USO

2018
Freddy Bear: RG/USO
Young Gun: AO/Wimbledon

2019:
Freddy Bear: Wimbledon
Young Gun: AO/RG/USO

2020:
Freddy Bear: becomes president of the world

HYPOCRITES!

One thing is for sure its gonna be great experience for Chung to play Federer. With Neville Godwin as his coach, he may make another QF in grand slam this year.

Young up and comer winning a slam would be good for the game, no question.

Fed fans are gonna still root for him to go all the way because he's their favourite player. The same way Novak and Nadal fans would have done in this situation.

Next gen are "garbage" (as someone put it) until they show their mettle on the big stage, that's the way it always has been.

Of course.

Especially for those who have been crying for a weak era and lackage of young guns in the last few years.

I’m a baseliner. I thought Zverev played well. Chung just played better. It wasn’t a boring game. It wasn’t like Chung was only playing defensive tennis. Btw, did anyone give Chung a chance against Djoko? It wasn’t like Djoko was beaten in the first round either. Now that Chung’s won people are criticizing his style? He did what he was supposed to do in beating Zverev, Djoko and Sandgren. It looks like Chung’s confidence is super high right now, and I’d give him a good chance at beating Federer. If he does, which is a big “IF”, he has a good chance in the final. I think it’s good for tennis to have a new star.

I also think Chung winning would be better for tennis in the long run, but please let's not make out like it would some sort of sin against humanity if Federer did win. A Federer win is never really bad for tennis. The same way a Nadal or Djokovic, or even Murray win isn't. Because these guys are all too popular for any of their wins to be bad for tennis, by definition. Most people (including myself) would like nothing more than for Federer to keep winning for the foreseeable future. Even now people want Nadal and particularly Djokovic and Murray back at their bests because they're simply the most popular. There's nothing wrong with that despite the 1% here that would like to see complete and utter change because they're worried about the "state of tennis."

Again, the state of tennis is fine in the majority's mind as long as the Big 4 are winning. Not many outside here actually look at age gaps or other things like that. They don't chew on their fingernails because a GOAT 36 year old is beating a 25 year old.

Federer is the GOAT.

He shall not simply let young pretenders defeat him for the "good of the sport".

Said pretenders need to defeat the man, showing no mercy.

Agreed upon by all objective tennis observers.

That's a lie. In WTF 2010, Federer beat Murray in RR, Djokovic in the SF and then Nadal in the Final. I'm not certain, but he could be the only member of the big 4 to beat the other 3 in the same tournament.

Just saw this now after posting - too much salt around here, why can't fans of other players just appreciate the GOATness of Roger?

Doesn't work this way, you can't penalize Federer because of his fans. He is not responsible.

And also other fanbases would be doing the same if their guy won 20 and you know it.

What is going on ? Rafa will get his 11th RG, don’t fret.

Nadal had 3 slams when I joined, you already know how many seats you can have. Nothing to do with him, tennis needs a new star much more than Federer needs a 20th slam. I've already said I'd be more than happy for someone else to win the FO a year ago, and got beat up from Nadal fans about it then. Eat some ribs, and walk with Elias ;)
