Just curious how many of you also feel, as does a very cranky Roddick and Agassi fanatic, that Roddick has a superior forehand to Federer. Which player do you consider to have the better forehand?

I have their 04 Rogers Masters match on tape and during forehand rallies, Roddick had a little more pace than Federer, but Federer usually won the points. Roddick doesn't necessarily have a more powerful forehand than Federer, but when I timed their forehands Andy's ball almost always reached Roger before Roger's reached Andy's. I'd say Roger has the better forehand overall, but the videotape shows that Andy has the faster forehand during rallies. When it comes to winners, they can hit their forehands equally fast.

I have that match on tape too and Roddick was a bull in the first set. Grass isn't the best surface to compare forehands, but Roddick had one memorable winner in a later set, when he hit an inside in forehand because Federer ran around his backhand and left the deuce side wide open.

I agree it was in that match. How often does he play anything like that though? About two or three times a year out of the twenty times a year I see him play.

Federer has the better fh. He can end points with it at will, while Roddick has a good fh but needs time to set it up and is more cmfortable hitting it from far behind the baseline.

And esp for a mid court ball, Fed has the best fh. The angles he genrates are simply amazing. I think Roddick used to have a better fh in 2003/2004. Since then he has started hitting more topspin, as a result its more consistent but he doesn't have as many winners. And the consistency doesn't help Roddick much since thats not his style.

Federer overall but Roddick hits it better inside out. He gets good side spin on it and it zips away from the opponent, moreso than Federer's does.

Federer and Roddick both love hitting inside out so it's tough to say whose is better. I'm gonna lean toward Federer on the inside out because I've seen his opponents miss with outstretched backhands many times.

Don't know.

Actually, I haven't watched Roddick play in so long that I don't remember how good his forehand is. For a while I saw so much of him that afterwards I just didn't bother watching.

I suggest that all of you watch the tape of the 2004 Wimbledon final...That should show you that when Roddick is on (not any matches in 2005 that i saw) he can totally dominate anyone...If it wasn't for that stupid rain delay he would be a diff. player. He is playing well enough to have some kind of a chance at the AO, but I doubt he'll have another chance to beat fed any time soon...True True defcon, hes been pushing WAY WAY to much lately...Its definately hurting him, but he did say in an article on his website that his 2006 strategy was "constant agression" which is the best strategy...check it out:

hey i have a question for you: Are you an idiot? when has power dominated, its always creativity and the mental part. how ignorant is that, no matter what he can blow people away. i mean thats great, just get one fast little guy to hustle and put a racquet on it and get it back (Hewitt) and eventually he'll miss one. if theres more options than just "blow it away" aka hit the crap outta teh ball such as hit an angle or heavy topspin. variety always wins, thats tennis. a match is a test of the biggest toolbox or weapons. who is the smartest. so just don't give us that ignorant crap, he can just hit a big ball because i can't understand what i'm actually watching but he's an american and gets teh babes so he's teh best. Roddick is awesome but currently, and maybe forever, federer is better by more than what appears.

that was one incredible match, i have that match its insane. power hitting has never been so impressive, even his backhand had some pace on it. but Federer had some time to think (rain delay) then started coming to the net more and he came through

Without a doubt, it's Federer. Roger has more variety on it and the abiility to control and hit it with power when he needs it. There's no question about that, although Roddick's isn't that bad at all.

Roger has such mastery over his forehand. It's an awsome shot to watch.

It's definitely Federer. All about the angles and versatality.

Re: Wimby Final 04, I have to say that I haven't ever seen Roddick play so well as he did up to the third set rain delay, and I think he would have won if not for the time sitting around. Roddick's first set is my favorite set of tennis I think I have seen anyone play. He was just too good for Federer, which is saying a lot obviously.

And I agree Roddick needs to go back to taking more chances on the forehand (like he did at Wimbledon 04). The last few times I've seen him play, I've found myself wanting to yell at the screen for him to take a cut at the ball and stop being such a pansy. If he did that, then maybe this would be a more debatable discussion.

Dumb Brad Gilbert told Roddick that it was perfectly fine to slap the ball violently, but we know the narcissistic donkey had no coaching ability. He couldn't teach Rod that variety and backhands set up better forehands. Serving harder only messed up the body and made Roddick more confused and uninterested in working and winning.

Hahaha infact it may surprise you to know that i am infact classed as a qenius . However, this thread is all about pesonal opinion and my PERSONAL OPINION is that i prefer roddicks. When does power win, actually all the time he wouldn't be world no 3 if he DIDN'T win using the power he owns. And
fyi im not an american so i dont care whether he gets all the babe and btw he doesn't
now im not going to get in a fight over the internet so why dont you just lighten up and allow people their own opinion.

I agree. In terms of pure power Roddick wins, however, apart from that Feds FH is better in any part. The racket speed he can create is amazing.

In 2003, I thought everything about Roddick was the shiznits. Back then, in addition to his big 1-2 (S&FH), he was actually able to break serve. Last year, I the experiment was a bust. It looked like he was taking power off his FH, which made it look loopy, only to prolong rallies...? I couldn't stand watching Roddick last year.

My vote goes to The Rog. Much more versitle, can create incredible angles and has the KO power.

Federer has a forehand that is very easy on the eyes (as is the rest of his game) and he has potential to create any angle with it. What remains incredible is his ability to create any angle he wants while on the run as well.

However, I think Roddick has the more consistent forehand. Consistent in power that is. Roddick flat out hits harder more of the time. I think his forehand is probably heavier than Federer's and has a little more depth. Basically, Roddick's forehand is just more penetrating.

I remember Hewitt commented Roger's forehand in the line of ' Federer's forehand is tough to read and the pace and versatility comes with it makes it even harder for me to put the deep, let alone be aggressive with the return of his forehand shot.'

He was saying along that line and it does make perfect sense if you actually watch Roddick's and Federer's matches. He has no problems with Roddick's forehand pace and placement but it's Federer's versatility - meaning, the pace, angles, placements, spin - that causes Hewitt's to fumble. But of course, it's just not the forehand that Hewitt loses but I'm trying to get the point across about how formidable Federer forehand is.

Roddick does have a good forehand too but not in the same depth as Federer.

I would rather Roger's forehand EVEN if Roddick had his 2004-2005 forehand. That being said Roddick's 2004-2005 forehand is much better than his current one.

Whoever voted for Roddick cannot be serious. It is debatable but Federer's forehand is probably the Greatest Forehand Ever!! It's right up there with the Sampras Serve as one of the Greatest shots of all time.

2006 was a completely different tennis game than it is right now. Roddick's forehand was a lot different so saying this is just ignorant.

What w waste of a thread. Maybe in 2003 and into 2004 there could have been some discussion, but now??? Are you serious???

Other than sheer power (and Andy doesn't go after his backhand like he used to), Federer's forehand is superior in almost every aspect.

Roddick's forehand even at its peak in 2003-2004 was only enough to help him beat Federer 1 out of 8 tries or something. Roddick's 2nd best shot was his forehand and Federer's best was his forehand, so I hugely doubt Roddick "can never beat Federer" had a better forehand even in 2003-2004, let alone by 2006.

That Roddick has even 20% of votes here makes me laugh at the state of TW these days.

Even 2004 Roddick's FH wasn't as good as Federer's 2006 FH. Federer's 2006 FH was literally unstoppable. There's a reason why Nadal stayed away from that shot, even on clay.

Yeah I agree. Roddick's 2004 FH would easily be in the top 5 today though, maybe in the top 3. Actually both Roddick and Federer are trying to discover their old forehand. I dont think Federer is hitting his forehand like 2006 either.

Roddick's starting to find his form on that shot. Took out some solid competition in Stepanek and Hewitt, and was able to rip a few good FHs.

Federer though, seems pretty defensive now adays. Although no one has seen him play recently in the past few months, at the AO, he was extremely defensive off this side at times.

I'd say Roddick's 2004 FH would be #3. Nadal can use more angles and defend better off this side, but the 2004 Roddick FH is definitely ridiculous when it is on (Federer received a dosage of this at the Wimbledon 2004 final for the first set).

I dont get to see as much tennis outside the slams these days as there isnt even much coverage. It will be interesting to see if Roddick can get back in the top 5 if his rejuvenated forehand continues though.

IW should be exciting. Nadal, Federer with Cahill, Roddick playing excellent, Djokovic coming off a title at Dubai, and maybe Murray. That's not even including the random factors like Safin and Nalbandian, both who will be seeded, which will most likely prevent any upsets of these guys.

Agassi wouldnt make sense in a forehand poll vs Federer either. In the last 15 years alone Federer, Courier, Lendl, Sampras, Nadal, Muster, Gonzalez and possibly Berasetegui all have had superior forehands to Agassi. I am pretty sure there are some others I am missing too. Agassi has a great forehand but it isnt even close to the best or close to Federer's.

Roddick has a pusher forehand, half of the tour has a better forehand than him.
once again hes top ten. you dont stay in the top ten pushing forehands. the guy is ripping the crap out of the ball just less then he used. i get that you dont like the guy but his forehand is still an effective shot he wouldnt be top ten without it.

and i voted for roddick cause i hate federer.

Djokovic, Gonzalez, Verdasco all have better forehands than Roddick in 2004.
