Comparing the dominance of Djokovic at the Australian Open to Nadal at the French Open to Federer at Wimbledon.

Djokovic - Australian Open
2011 - 67.4% of games won - 4th highest ever at Australian Open
2008 - 65.4% of games won - 8th highest ever at Australian Open
2012 - 65.4% of games won - 9th highest ever at Australian Open

Nadal - French Open
2008 - 75.7% of games won - 3rd highest ever at French Open
2012 - 71.0% of games won - 7th highest ever at French Open
2007 - 66.5% of games won - outside of top at 10 highest ever at French Open

Federer - Wimbledon
2006 - 66.3% of games won - 2nd highest ever at Wimbledon
2004 - 64.4% of games won - 5th highest ever at Wimbledon
2012 - 63.6% of games won - 10th highest ever at Wimbledon

Obviously, Nadal has dominated "his" grand slam more than the other two have dominated their grand slams. However, I think historically, Federer has been a more dominant player at his grand slam than anyone else in history beside Borg at the French Open. It is interesting that both Nadal and Federer had one of their three most dominant Grand Slam runs in 2012.

That is surprising to me that Nadal does not have one of the top two highest game winning %'s for FO. Are they both Borg?

Yes, Borg won an amazing 79.9% of games at the 1978 French Open, and 76.7% at the 1980 French Open. How good is that? Only Nadal at the 2008 French Open, ever won more than 75% of games at a Grand Slam.

That is insane. I just did some quick math and that basically means , not only do you not drop a set during the entire tournament, but you basically win all your sets at 6-1 or 6-2. That's just ridiculous dominance.

The more obvious interpretation of the data has very little to do with the players but rather with the surface; clay neutralizes a big serve, so Wimbledon and Australia will favor a more even split of games while (i.e. easier to hold serve) while the French will more greatly favor a dominant groundstroke game (i.e. easier to break serve).

Yes of course. But, many posters believe all surfaces are the same today. I think the data also shows that based on their ranking of % of games won that Federer and Djokovic have been slightly more dominant at their grand slams than Nadal from a historical ranking perspective.

That's good insight. I think that on grass, your % will be ruined if you run into even 1 big server like an Isner or Karlovic. On clay, that is not the case.

Of course it must be said that on the flipside - on clay, your own risk of getting broken is higher as well. So you have to be an exceptional baseliner like Borg to be able to drop very few games on your own serve.

Nonetheless, an interesting way to measure slowing of surfaces/improve of return games etc would be to measure hold % on grass now, vs what it was in the 90s/80s.

That is 100% ridiculous. Nadal won 7 RG and lost only ONCE. Borg lost several times at RG and won only 6 titles total. Fed lost the same # of W as he won: 7 (so he has a 50% success rate there). Djokovic has only 3 AO and he's lost it more often than 3 times for sure. Furthermore, Fed has never won W without losing a set. Never. (Not even in 2003 when he managed to lose a set to Fish and in 2005 to Kiefer- of all people!!). Nadal won RG twice without losing a set (2008 and 2010). Djoko has never won AO in straight sets either. There is no way on earth to argue that Djoko and Fed somehow are more dominant at their best slams. Pure insanity (or manipulation of meaningless stats if you prefer)

I wouldn't call it manipulation, but rather, it would be shortsighted to use this one stat to define dominance at a slam. Certainly a combination of overall winning %, game set/win %, number of slams won, number of attempts etc all need to be factored in. I am reasonably certain that the fuller picture would show Nadal to be the most dominant at his slam.

What is the stat you are using to prove this? The stats you posted are the best performances for each of the 3 players in terms of game winning % and comparing that with historical best in their slam. They speak nothing about averages, let alone defining game winning % as the overall metric to judge dominance. Why just game win %, why not overall set winning %? Why not slams won/attempts?

I get your point that you are not comparing these guys across their slams but rather with the best of their own slam. But clearly we know that there could potentially only be 1 guy more dominant at RG than Nadal i.e. Borg, so right off the bat its a two horse race. And we know that Nadal had Borg beat on many metrics (slams won, slams won/attempts, overall match win % at RG and I believe even set winning %).

Federer was 68 and 1 on grass in his prime. Very comparable to Nadal's clay record. Historically, it is much easier for an upset on a fast court than a clay court.

More to your point, I feel like the competition Rafa faced during his 7 FO titles was far better than what Borg faced.

We agree on something for once. The OP is very good at manipulating stats to make Nadal look bad and everyone else, especially Fed, look good.

Who is the highest ever at wimbledon? Borg 1976?

McEnroe, 1984, 68.0%. Impressive when you consider that Federer's highest at Wimbledon was 66.3%. Borg in 1976 was 65.5% and third best all time.

Perhaps, the most impressive was Lendl who from 1985-1987 at the U.S. Open was 68.87%. I believe this is the highest of any player over three consecutive years at a Grand Slam.
