Big 3 Draws Discussion

Federer and Del Potro

Let's all sing kumbaya and cry about the draw even though one of the big three will win it all.

To me, it seems dumb to discuss draws even before the event begins. There's an astronomically high probability that the projected draws never actually happen so why don't we wait until one of the Big 3 wins the tournament before groaning and moaning?

Agree.

Then when Rafa or Djoker wins... we pounce. :p

I also think they will lose earlier. But if the matches happen then both should be much tougher opponents for him than Federer and Nadal. At least they are not afraid of him mentally.

Stan the FAT man hasn't done anything notable since forever. And Medvedev hasn't done anything at the slam level. Remember when people were hyping Agut - until Novak crushed him in Wimb.

Fed and Nadal are tougher anyday than these guys. Coz those 2 are champions unlike the others.

Unfortunately, you are right: Nadal only plays aggressive enough when he is on the ropes:
See the sf against Federer in Wimbledon saving those match points!

It's a pattern for Nadal. His natural aggression has completely been abandoned, He plays percentages which sucks considering he started as a naturally offensive player in 2004.

The matches where Nadal has been the most aggressive are those when he is DOWN and OUT (vs Novak UsOpen 2011 Final 3rd set) or he's injured and can't run (vs Delpo Wimbledon 2011 R4).

My point is that he CANNOT beat Fed and Novak outside of clay without being sufficiently offensive. That is why Fed has reversed the matchup with Rafa since 2017. It has been ridiculously one sided, once the Swiss has ramped up the aggression.
Nadal can't fight fire with fire. He doesn't trust his game enough to throw caution to the wind and hit his shots. And now that he doesn't have the wheels of old, he gets into trouble. Loses the match in the best case and gets injured in the worst case.

In AO Medvedev gave Djokovic a much better fight than Nadal did.

It's as if Stan hadn't had the double knee surgery and we're still in a post-FO'15 final haze.

Granted, his match with Tsitsipas at the FO this year was epic (best match I've watched this year) and played at a level I didn't think Stan could still produce... but it was against Tsitsipas, not Novak.

Medvedev has ZERO chance of beating Novak. He probably won't even make the QF.

I'm really tired of people hyping up the Russian. What has he done at the slam level? Took one set off Novak?

He will NOT reach the QF of the UsOpen, but if he somehow does, Novak will thrash him in straights. That I can guarantee you.

Please stop overrating Medvedev. He is nothing right now, and like 99.9999% of the new gen - he will amount to NOTHING as well.

Yeah you are right, the next gen will never do anything good in their lives, this is 100% sure, and when the big 3 retires, nobody will win another tournament, ever.

Excellent post. Haha.
Of course they will win tournaments , but that will be AFTER the big 3 retire. Because these guys are just NOT good enough to compete with even the sub-par and slow big 3.

I can tell you that Novak is not going anywhere for the next 4-5 years at the slam level. Fed/Nadal possibly another couple of years at least - maybe more. What is their incentive to retire when they can still win slams and make $$.
5 years from now this NEW GEN won't be new-gen as they will be in their late 20s. That is when they will FINALLY start to win tournaments, when Fedalovic got bored and quit.

This is the reality: Tennis is DYING. The depth of talent is super pathetic compared to the 80s and the 90s. Most youngsters do NOT want to take up tennis but go to other sports. At least the gifted athletes do.
That is why the big 3 are reaping fruits and winning when they are ancient in tennis terms - early to late 30s.

The natural law of the universe is that the young devour the old. But in tennis, this law has been turned upside down. Because of the lack of talent, the old are STILL ruling the world of tennis.

Honestly a lot of the threats in Djokovic and Nadal’s draw seem a bit overblown by some people. Cilic is 15-13 on the year. He’s not even reaching Nadal, let alone beating him. Verdasco has challenged Nadal in the past, but he’s old and finds that kind of form ever more infrequently. Very slim chance he manages to play at a level that would even challenge let alone beat Nadal. Wawrinka is still working his way back from injury and will probably never reach the peaks he reached in 2013-2017. Same with Querrey.

Their quarterfinal opponents are more significant threats in my eyes, at least compared to Fed’s. But early rounds all look fairly even to me. Should be a fun tournament.

And it’s probably better for Fed to play Djoko before the final to reduce the pressure a bit. So I can’t really say I’m bummed about that. Wish there were a Murray or Wawrinka type of player to even things out for the other half, but maybe Thiem will be able to find the kind of form he did last year and play some killer tennis.

Djokovic > Nadal > Fed

Djokovic = easy - mid R1-R4, Stan can catch fire anytime, Querrey servebot
= hardest QF - F

Nadal = hardest R1-R4
= mid QF - F

Federer = easy R1-R4
= hard QF - F

Nad's just a tad tougher than Fed's
Djokovic got Wawrinka and Medvedev in 4th and 5th matches, the rounds he struggles the most. Seed 1 vs seed 5.

Coincidence? Hardly.

The draw is rigged, once again, and this needs to be finally addressed or tennis is going the way of FIFA and boxing federations...

Dude is done, he won't even sniff getting to Djoker, and will go down in straights if he does. When was the last time he was a threat?
This is the point. Wawrinka is never more dangerous than when written off as a no hoper. When he plays without fear thats when he becomes dangerous

Is he still not physically there yet? Ive not watched a full match of his since Tsitsipas match in Paris...but i thought the signs lookes great for him in Paris moving forward.
Fed dismissed him at RG and Fed got smacked by Rafa. This summer he just looks slow, out of shape, and wild at times.

Fed vs Wawrinka was close tho, not a beatdown or anything
Yes, but isnt Wawa supposed to be a beast on clay? Was this not Fed's first RG in several years?

I just think Wawa has done what he is going to do, and I would be shocked if he reaches or beats Djoker... but I would be ecstatic. :p

Yeah I don't expect him to do anything vs Djoker should they meet.
But yes, would be great if he somehow pulled it off

As tradition.

Djokovic:
R1: Carballes Baena
R2: Querrey
R3: Lajovic
R4: Wawrinka
QF: Medvedev
SF: Federer
F: Nadal

Federer:
R1: Qualifier
R2: Dzumhur
R3: Pouille
R4: Goffin
QF: Nishikori
SF: Djokovic
F: Nadal

Nadal:
R1: Millman
R2: Kokkinakis/Qualifier
R3: Verdasco
R4: Isner/Cilic
QF: Khachanov
SF: Thiem
F: Djokovic

Personally, I rate Djokovic's draw as 8.5-9/10. Quite difficult, especially from R4 on. Federer's is really easy until Djokovic. 4/10. Nadal's lacks anyone that can hurt him until the final. 2-3/10.
I doubt Fed gets to second week, and that has nothing to do with his draw.

As entertained as I would be if Kyrgios won, someone tell this Luke Jensen guy that you are supposed to pick THE favorite for the TOURNAMENT not YOUR favorite player.

So Anderson, Berdych and Fognini already out of the """tough""" draw
Was anyone seriously thinking those 3 would make it to Djokovic? All this does is make Djokovic's opponents less likely to lose before reaching him. Querrey is the big plus in Djokovic's draw so far.

Come back when Wawrinka, Medvedev, Federer, or Nadal lose.

Forgot to also mention Querrey. He, Anderson and Berdych caused complaints about being in Novak's draw from some Novak fans.

Those guys probably missed how badly Berdych has been playing and Anderson's injury then. I don't think Djokovic is losing before the QF, so it's really the QF-F that I'm concerned about.

except that it turned to be the toughest match for Novak.
except that it is not the first time when he troubled Novak. If you look back in time, they met in Davis Cup, when he was probably not even in top 100, and guess what, he managed to get a set out of Novak. But then burned out during the match and lost. Happens.
except that recently he defeated Novak, when Novak had a pretty much open draw and he needed 2 matches + 1 set to win a Masters? yeah, right, Novak wanted to play Federer, and as he lost, Novak lost interest to a match vs Rublev.

P.S. the guy is in top 5 in the world.
calling a top 5 in the world "nothing"?
