Big serve = boring tennis - Poor Canas

:cry: Canas played better than ABOMB except ABOMB saved brk pts w/ 141 mph serves = boring. I feel for some of these grinder/magicians who hit groundies with flair and brilliance yet end up getting into the airport shuttle after the 2nd-3rd rd becuase they play a big bomber like ABOMB who would get smoked without the cheapo serve. I have a relatively big serve for a 4.5 player 120+ indoor and I feel I have to rely on it when being outplayed. Sour Grapes - I prefer to watch Canas over ABOMB - I learn more and the entertainment is greater.

120+ server for 4.5 player is pretty good. Assuming this is going in the service box, you must be holding serve. You must be the Roddick of the 4.5's :) Also, borisboris == boomboom ? So, you dont like Roddick ? Im confused :wink:
 
Becker is perfection in his technique, service motion, forehand, backhand. He had a cool calm demeaner. Watching ABOMB-I wouldn't teach any of his techniques, his forehand works for him but the wrist motion is terrible, service motion is non-existent = all arm thrust and he is too hurried - no composure. Can't even compare Boris @ 21 already won 2 SLAMS and 2 YR END CHAMP plus DAVIS CUP Victory to ESPN OVERRATED ABOMB!!! My 1st serve is big for my division but the reason I'm stil in the division is because of my 2nd serve :wink: Plus I suck under pressure :x

Have you been watching the same guy? He was very well known for swearing in German and blowing his cool. He also muscled the ball off both wings like nobody's business and used an eastern forehand grip to hit his serves (weird).

Come on, boris....
 
:lol: I HAVE OVER 40 MATCHES OF THE BOOMER. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TIME CLIFF D SAYS BORIS IS ONE OF THE CALMEST PLAYERS IN THE GAME. NOWHERE NEAR EDBERG/WILANDER BUT BECKER WOULD LET OUT THE SHRIEK -IN GERMAN PROFANITY- LIKE ANY TOP 5 PLAYER WOULD, HELL TO BE IN THE TOP8 FOR 11 STRAIGHT YEARS YOU HAVE TO LOOSE IT HERE & THERE? p.s. I too use the Eastern for serving = great for going out wide.
 
You can't really use Cliff D.'s comments as evidence for an argument.

An interesting side note on Becker's outbursts....I seem to recall he was much more prone to swear and be surly when he had a beard.
 
Now I know why your second serve is so weak. You have to learn how to use a Continental grip. I love playing guys that hit huge flat serves on their first serve, but have no second serve. I destroy them because: 1) They usually miss their first serves and then hit a duck on the second, 2) Even if they make the first serve, they can usually only serve it to one place in each service box, so I just sit on it and crush it anyway. Just played a guy like that yesterday. 6-0, 6-0 Ballmachine!
 
:lol: Yeah Bearded Boris was in the mid - 90's = stress about his rocky marriage and pending retirement. Actually my 2nd serve is a sound kicker - my problem is that my deltoid rips when I consistantly go for the outside, and well yeah I am a choker in some matches - but hell there isn't a tennis player alive that has closed every match he's up.......Ballmachine - it is well known that Sampras called Beckers serve one of the best he'd ever seen because he had the most unusual spin = not flat!
 
One thing you could always say for Boris: He would NOT be cheated; he would always take a nice, big cut at the ball.

I loved seeing him hit 120 mph 2nd serves when down break/set/match point. He seemed to make an amazing number of those.....
 
Boris definitely did not just serve flat. I am talking about players that I have faced that can only hit flat. Boris had every serve in his repertoire , and he was without a doubt, one of the best servers in the history of the game. I loved to watch Boris play, and I still think back to how exciting it was when he won Wimbledon as a teenager. Everybody became a tennis fan for those two weeks in England!
 
:lol: Yeah he did go big on the dbl barrell 1st serves. He had Champioship pt vs. Muster in the 95 Monte Carlo Open and went for a huge 2nd serve for a dbl. He lost the 5th set 0-6!!!
 
I saw that match, and I was devastated. Boris was right on the cusp of winning his first clay court title. He never was able to win a title on clay, which is sad because he did come extremely close on several occasions .
 
Oh boo hoo. Listen to all the crybabies whine because A-Rod beat their favorite player. Tennis is boring when HE wins! Waaaa! ROTFL.
 
boris, the serve is an important shot in tennis. The serve just happens to be A-Rod's main weapon. Yes he wouldn't be nearly as good and highly ranked if it weren't for his serve. But you can say that about a lot of players if you took away their main weapon. Take away Moya's forehand and replace it with a mediocre forehand. Would he be ranked as high? No. Take away Hewitt's speed...etc, etc..you get the point.

So it happens that aces upon aces is boring, I agree. But that's Roddick's big weapon and is a legitimate shot in tennis. Most would agree that it is THE most important shot in the game. And Roddick has it in spades.

And besides, you can't just take away someone's shot saying something to the effect of "Where would he be without his serve?". Sure it's good for discussion but that is part of his game. Who knows how good his backhand would be if he didn't have such a big serve. Maybe his groundstrokes would have been worked on more and be better in that department. The serve is part of Roddick's game and he just happens to be very good at it. Of course he's gonna be a lot of players with it.
 
:twisted: Yeah yeah yeah.......All I know is what I enjoy watching -and it's not Goran @ Wimbledon -I watched a Qtr. final match in 96 and it was boring tennis. My friends are fair weathered friends of tennis,, someone like Federer-Sampras they like to watch perfection or a magician like Arazi-Santoro. They feel like me that ABOMB is boring tennis-esp. the early rds. I hate the if & butts of life but if ABOMB served like Dementiava then...............
 
If you really are worry about tennis you ought to be eager to support this kind of tennis court:

The dividing line between the service courts is abolished and the
entire area will be divided into three equally large service courts -
with responding marks on the baseline. In singles play the service
will be executed from between the marks, in doubles from between
the sideline and the nearest mark - to the service court exactly
opposite the server.

Some consequences:

The renewed tennis court would diminish quantity of
aces and in general serving would become more difficult, the return
angle would be smaller (returning would become more difficult,
too, which is good for serve&volleyers!); compared
to the present situation the ball would be in play
longer, thus resulting in greater enjoyability for the spectator, which,
of course, is the crux of the matter. The unearned advantage of the
left-handers would also be removed.

Third but not least (and the most surprising and some kind of an
extra bonus) the rhythm of the game would become much faster, for
too much time is currently being spent as the players move from one
service court to another. Besides, it is obvious that the first service
per cent would increase remarkably because to get into the second
service would be no doubt of very great advantage to the returner.
The both of these would together mean that there would be a much
higher percentage of tennis of the total time of the matches because
the dead moments would be much shorter.
