Because:
a) It's not an exhibition event, it's the biggest of the ATP events.
b) It will always be relevant even if Nadal never wins it.

Boris must have been getting selective memory. I prefer players reflections at the time. Watch the end of the match - and how he acted. It was a huge deal to him winning the WTF.

We are so used to cup draws in tennis, that round-robin seems to be betrayal to the sports core spirit.
Same thing in the Stanlay Cup, best out of 7 games within a really short period of time. And basically nobody is questioning the format.

Not a lot of humans who sit around and think about tennis 24/7 though. And that goes out to all tennis fans, myself included. Pretty weird actually.
