We are almost at the end of the 2019 season. I think it would be cool to have a thread with all the predictions for the 2020 season, whether it’s GS or other big tournaments.

What a big change of opinion over a month:

AO 2020: Medvedev
FO 2020: Thiem
Wimbledon 2020: Nadal
US Open 2020: Djokovic

AO 2021: Tsitsipas
FO 2021: Nadal
Wimbledon 2021: Federer
US Open 2021: Auger Aliassime

Djokovic 17 at the end of 2021
Nadal 21 at the end of 2021
Federer 21 at the end of 2021

Thiem for FO is the most believable 'newcomer' win, imo, but then given his consecutive finals appearances there I guess that's not a particularly eye-opening extension of one's neck.

Surely you saw coming that Thiem would win IW, Fognini Monte Carlo, Medvedev Cincinnati and Shanghai this year + making the US Open final and pushing Nadal to 5 set ?
If you watched some Thiem at USO 2018 then it should’ve been quite obvious how good he is on slow HC. Fognini and Medvedev was harder to predict, but it can’t be compared to Medvedev and Tsitsipas winning WIM and USO respectively as they are both useless at these particular tournaments.

Medvedev favorite surface is grass according to him. And it’s easy to imagine his game adapting well to this surface, he has a huge serve, great return and flat strokes. This year he lost in 3R to a great Goffin after a 5 set marathon.
Tsitsipas, I agree, is a more risky pick but he is good on all surfaces and the Olympics will probably tire the old guards next summer.

Since when? A huge serve is Sampras, Opelka, Roddick, Nick or Isner. Medvedev rarely serves above 125 and then oftentimes doesn't get it in. I don't think anyone would ever characterize Med has having a huge serve because he doesn't. He does get props for occasionally serving huge second serves, but that's a strategy he's only used a handful of times, like in Cincy against Novak.

Why people overrate Tsitsipas so much is beyond me. He lost in the first round of Wimbledon and USO this year, and just played a pathetic match against Djokovic in Paris. So far he didn't do anything that makes him a favorite for USO 2020.
His backhand is such a vulnerability on fast courts. The fact that half dead Nadal bageled him at AO says everything you need to know about Tsitsipas outside clay.

I'll try to take a risk with this prediction.

AO: Djokovic
French Open: Thiem
Wimbledon: Nadal
USO: Medvedev

Federer: Miami, Shanghai and Cincinnati (He's going to finish 4th in 2020, unless there's a considerable decline he's going to be top 10 as long as he's physically/mentally fit)

You are aware that Federer has won 1 Masters in 2 years, right? And there is no way Nadal is winning Wimbledon without RG. His results depend heavily on momentum.

I think it says more about what the greatest lefty forehand ever can still do to a one-handed backhand.

His backhand isn't great by any stretch (or even above average), but it wasn't a vulnerability just a few days earlier against Federer on that same court, a guy who loves to rush his opponents and make every court feel blazing fast. Or when he went toe-to-toe against the best BH on tour in Djokovic at Shanghai, one of the fastest courts on tour.

And then it sucked so much the next day that by the end of the second set he started running around FH in frustration.

The thought of John Isner being a grand slam champ is horrifying, but I’ll take it if Stan wins Wimbly :)
