The flaw in these “wins over x ranked players” is the form varies.

2009 AO Verdasco or 2013 AO Wawrinka for example were not ranked in the top 10 at the time but they were godly opponents on that specific day.

2007 AO Gonzalez, 2008 AO Tsonga and 2010 WI Berdych would be other examples of players ranked outside the top 10 who were in great form for those 2 weeks

I don't think beating #8 & #10 or #6 & #9 on route is that big a deal in this era. Counting WTF is redundant as that is a base requirement.

Question should be Top 5.

Yeah, I agree. Ranking indicates a general trend (as do age and name, I think), but there are enough exceptions to the rule that some care needs to be taken in such analyses.

You mean Top 4
Problem with Top 5 due to luck of draw, one player may never face a 5th ranked player due to him being in other half of the draw and most likely that player doesn't reach a final but certainly more often then not reaches qf, where no. 5 should lose that qf vs no1 or no2 player.
Tour should really be divided by Top 4,Top 8 since that's how draws work

It would be interesting to see a stat how many players achieved a Top 8 ranking vs Top 10, my guess is that there is quite a gap

You would expect these kind of stats to favor Novak because:
  • The ranking system is based upon ATP points
  • The majority of ATP points are acquired on hardcourts, because the majority of tournaments are on hardcourts. Somewhere around 60-70% I'd say.
  • Djokovic's best surface is hardcourt.
The result is that Djokovic more often encounters top-10 opponents on his preferred surface.
