Bigger Momma's Boy: Murray or Young?

At least Judy doesn't tell Andy how to up his percentage on his first serve. If you watch Jim Courier's documentary Unstrung the scenes with DY and his mom bring some lol's. All that said I actually kind of like DY, it's not his fault everyone including his parents put him on a rediculously high pedistal.

Why the fuss? Michael Chang always had his parents with him. Lleyton Hewitt had his parents with him for years. It works for some players. When Hewitt was number 1, he'd always have certain tennis figures saying his parents should stop travelling with him, which only increased Hewitt's "me against the world" mentality.

The parents of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are nearly always present for their sons' big matches. Why does Murray always get singled out as if he were somehow the exception among top players in having his mother present to support him?

Stupid thread!

Fully agree.

Young, or his mom, turned down a training offer from Nadal. NADAL, people!!! Him and his camp turned down an offer from James Blake a few years back. Heaven forbid the guy improve without his mom. Now he can go back to sucking his thumb and have his mom bring in the night light right on schedule.

Dumb question. So dissapointed to see Donald after showing some nice progress is going back under his clueless Mom's umbrella. Look for a big crash back downards the rankings by next summer/fall when he has some points to defend, unless he comes to his sense by then.

Murray does not sabotage his own potential through giving his Mom full say over all he does like Young does. Murray and Nadal are the two most hated players on this forum though, so look for Murray to win the poll nonetheless.

Maybe Donald is going coachless a la Federer and the media/haters are just throwing his mom in the mix to make headlines.

I think finances have a lot to do with it. He's not under contract for rackets or clothing at the moment and a full time coach would be extra plane fare, extra room & board on the road, plus probably a base salary, plus a % of his winnings.

Just speculation, but I think that's why he decided against keeping Mike Sell, or whoever his coach was gonna be.

Murray a Momma's boy? lol. He left home to move to Spain on his own as a kid. She goes to some of his matches now yeah, just like most of the other top players parents.

Judy doesn't coach Murray, I mean his first coach (when he started playing on the tour) was Gilbert. I don't see the comparison.

Murray is a softcock like most of the players these days. Safin was the last of the real male tennis players. Never forget that time he turned up to the AUS Open with 3 to 4 major pieces of meat in his entourage, legendary stuff. Murray on the other hand, brings his mum along and constantly screams and shouts at her like a kid, pathetic.

So true and the most disrespected. The amount of crap talked about these two far exceeds any nonsense talked about any other male tennis player on this forum! I've discovered its virtually a full-time job on here to try to defend them against the sheer ignorance and venom displayed by so many posters on here. They certainly seem to attract more than their fair share of out-and-out trolls than anyone else!

Murray's first coach when he was on tour was Mark Petchey - but your point is no less correct for this.

He sometimes shouts at his girlfriend and coaching team as well, not just his mother but at least he doesn't waste time smashing his rackets and screaming at umpires and linesmen and all and sundry like that 'real man Safin' liked to do!

Donald young - no doubt.

Every top player brings their families these days. Nadal's family is huge as it comprises uncle's as well.

Safin is 1,000 times cooler in every facet of life than Murray. He is allowed to smash sticks, the guy was a rock star like Agassi.

None of those types of players exist currently, kind of bums me out.

The point of the thread, is their parents are their coaches. Fed and co. aren't coached by their parents, stupid reply!
My answer is Young!

She has coached him and is a coaching presence, versus Fed and co. parents who sit and watch, big difference.

What drugs are you on? She doesn't coach Murray. She just sits there and gives little double fist pumps or the occasional smile. She's there to wash his clothes and cook for him and give him emotional support. That's all.

There's no comparison btwn Murray's relationship w/ his mom and Fed and his parents. As people have mentioned, Judy Murray was a coaching presence earlier in his career. Also, she has always travelled with him, I think.

Fed's parents rarely attended his matches early on as they both had jobs; his mom retired around 2003 and started attending more and then his dad retired several years later. Nowadays they are a regular presence in big matches/tournaments.

But Fed played for many years w/ his parents very rarely with him.

He's on the kind of drugs that make him post stuff like "I'm a tennis pro". Oh - and bashing Murray; he likes to do that - a lot.

Yeah - when he was 5. She hasn't been his coach since he entered puberty i.e. at any time during his career to date. Current GB Davis Cup captain Leon Smith was Murray's first proper coach via TennisScotland, then the Sanchez Casal guys, then Petchey, then Gilbert, and lastly MacLagan.

You think wrong about her always travelling with him - Murray left home at 15 to attend Sanchez-Casal in Barcelona. Judy doesn't attend the vast majority of his matches.

Posters have selective memory when bashing players. The OP could have bashed Murray for wasting slam winning material etc. Not for having a famility relative in your box.

Silly thread. Silly article.
When did Tennis Magazine believe some hack rag?

BTW: Connors was coached by this Mother and Grandmother.

Murray's first coach when he first came on the tour was Mark Petchey. Brad Gilbert didn't start coaching him until July 2006.

Ha ha, I know alot about Fed; not that much about Murray. So I guess he's not as much of a "momma's boy" as some think, then?

Sorry Mustard, you're too late this time, Batz was faster.

Don't worry, it happens even to the best of us.

You're right, I made that up, she hasn't ever coached Murray, I don't know what I was thinking.

Is that supposed to be a bad thing?

Safin had character as did most of the players of the past. Think Ivanisevic, Becker, Agassi. People loved them regardless of their antics. These days the players have zero character/personality. Murray is the greatest example, he has the personality of a house brick.

Neither is Murray. His coaches have been Mark Petchey, Brad Gilbert, Miles MacLagan and Alex Corretja and Darren Cahill on a part-time basis. Danny Vallverdu acts in a coaching capacity these days without the formal position.

Judy Murray has never acted as her son's coach except perhaps for when he was a young kid just starting out.

Try and get your facts right!!

You like making things up, dontcha Wally. How's the off season going for you - have you figured out your early 2012 schedule yet - will you play Doha or Brisbane?

I think she wipes his butt too

Well now I'd like to tell ya, but having you stalk me on here is enough, I don't need you showing up at my matches.
