Billie Jean King's superb 2021 autobiography ALL IN

I have been reading Billie Jean King's no holds barred brand new autobiography and it is truly a great read! She delves into everything: her career in tennis, her work on behalf of women's tennis, her gradual coming out process, her rivalries - particularly with the obnoxious Margaret Smith Court, her beliefs and how she came to have them, her life after tennis. The writing is crisp and clear. I particularly love reading about the changes to the tour especially before and after the open era.

We forget now that the Grand Slams didn't matter as much back then. She won 12 singles Grand Slams (1966 - 1975) but she only played in Australia and France a few times each during her long career - if she had played there more she would surely have won more Grand Slams.

Is this a new book or the old one she wrote some years ago?

I think that she discussed many of these same topics in her previous autobiography. It was published only a few years ago.
I have read her earlier book, it was decades ago. This is a brand new up to date book and it is superb. She goes in to much greater depth and is much more honest in this one. It's definitely worth reading!

This is a much more honest book, and written with a lot of time and distance from her darkest days. I still have my issues with Billie Jean, but I do believe she has made a lasting positive mark on many lives and the world in general.

I also appreciate her ability and willingness to make peace with her enemies including Jack Kramer, Bobby Riggs, and even Margaret Court, who she used to have dinner with every year during the Australian even as Court was doing her thing. She's been given a lot of grace, and in return she has shown a lot of grace to others. We all need that sometimes.

My only issue with Billie Jean is her continued support for imperialist-global corporatist-American exceptionalism-environmentally dangerous Democrats (I would feel the exact same if she supported Republicans). I think her politics is good on the "feel good" liberal issues but is extremely poor on the more important global issues that face us all.

My favorite parts of the book are her descriptions of her various matches - both the ones she won and the ones she lost. A sense of the historical changes that happened during her time on the tours - "shamateurism" and open era tennis.

Your politically loaded language just threw your credibility out the window...but that is your choice.

I looked over the book at the bookstore - looks like a valuable read.

Hello? You are really describing the other pro-authoritarian, pro-fossil fuel and anti-science party? Do you know what gaslighting is?

I find the feminist movement that BJK helped found to have sociopathic methods. And, as a volunteer with the USTA, my experience with the WTA was not positive - it was a very mean spirited organization / movement. I stopped believing the hype about BJK years ago. Mean people suck.

Both parties are imperialist-global corporatist-American exceptionalist and both continue to subsidize dangerous animal agriculture policies that do more to pollute and destroy the planet than even fossil fuels. I know the brainwashed people don't understand that both parties are dangerous. Yes, the Democrats throw some liberal crumbs that make us feel good but that is only part of the story. and yes, I am grateful for those liberal crumbs but for me both parties are dangerous and do not deserve our support. Personally I would like to see an end to all political parties as they all become corrupt in time. This whole gaslighting garbage is ridiculous. People can be against both parties and mean it; I feel the same way about all major political parties around the world.

I still like Billie Jean King and found her book to be very interesting. She is a flawed human being just like everybody else.

Dictators and their supporters always denigrate democratic parties. Read the history of the Weimar Republic.
You really are misunderstanding me. Dictators and their supporters belong to undemocratic parties. Remove parties altogether and you solve the problem. The Republican and Democratic parties in the United States are NOT DEMOCRATIC! You are using a false argument and you are wrong about it. You want to remain attached, fine, I simply expressed my opinion about what I disliked about Billie Jean King's book. Now leave it alone, it's o.k. to have different opinions.

There is no democracy without parties.
You know that of course and that makes people like so dangerous.

When there are no parties then people have to be independent in their thinking and their political choices. Parties are dangerous for that reason. My problem with Billie Jean King is her support for dangerous politicians within a dangerous political party. I would feel the same way regardless of the party involved. It is the groupthink that happens around political parties that is truly dangerous.

Societies where parties were abolished always were or became hellholes.

I will want to read this. Great player, superb tactician and volleyer. I always loved her work in the commentary booth. Whatever else one may say about Ms King, she knows her tennis inside and out.
