Watching an old match from last year's Powershares series between Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick...because we all know tennis channel never shows anything live or current.

Both are playing with blacked out frames...not really concerned what's underneath, but have a question.

Is the blackout the player's decision, or do the racquet companies make them do it?

Players do what they want. As professionals they sign a contract and are paid to use equipment that has the latest paint on it and not use a competing product. Typically a pro will black out their racquet to create buzz for something which is going to be released, to try another brand within the terms of their contract, or as a retired professional. A retired professional might just like the look better or objects to offering free advertising to a brand who has been paying them for the last decade.

I think as in both there cases it is not wanting to give out free advertising to company’s they’re no longer sponsored by. I know for Roddick he seems to be using the exact same frame from his playing days. With Mardy he was using a blacked out frame for a time in between his last time on tour and the US Open swan song he had. After he was right back to a blacked out frame. And now he seems to be using a blacked out Babolat maybe even one of Roddicks frames.

There is a local automotive paint company who’s blacked out a few of the frames of some of the guys who play at my club and they do look really cool. Personally as I use an older frame a few of mine have pretty decent chunks of paint missing so I may go this route as he stripped and sanded them and than painted and clear coated there’s. Came back almost back at weight. Plus or minus 10 grams which to me is impressive.

That is not a hard rule at all! Very popular players can do what they want! E.g. Bouchard, Nadal! As long as you have 5 million or more followers on social media; the racquet companies know who is who in the marketing promotions activities and who depends on who to get the word out on their products! LOL!

Having strung at one of those Power Shares series, I can tell you that MF used a poorly blacked out Aero Pro and AR with a blacked out Pure Drive.

Without knowing myself, im picturing them taking a black spraypaint to the rackets, while cussing out the comp. That stopped the checks from coming in..

At one point Roddick had some frames that were blacked out by (R P N Y) with some kind of design, some kinda carbon fiber look. So I don't think those were just spray painted with a spray paint can. But who knows...

Theres been players on tour who would black out their rackets using stencil ink. Karlovic comes to mind.

Sand blasting all that top paint, could give you that look
it would reveal the carbon fiber material under

Even the concierge service in the hotels they stay in for a tournament would be able to provide the spray paint..
with as many players as they see come through their doors every year, im sure black spray paint is not one of the weirdest request they get/got.. :D
