Hi to everyone, I've recently been got a pair of 98's 16x19 (Christmas' Eve gift), and I could test twice with ALU 1.20 with nice sensations (coming from Blade V7), but with a bit of elbow pain hitting hard. So, I'd request you about test with other polys that not scrifice control and spin so being a bit more arm friendly.

Regards.

Maybe try hybriding it with a multi or synth gut. Or lower the tension a bit.

This ^^^. What tension were they strung? I believe Element is supposed to be a softer poly if you want to stay in the Luxilon line.

I've tried mixed option in the past, but finally results expensive. I'd rather somethig to use full bed and not stressing too much arm, elbow or shoulder. Ever strung around 22 kp.

In the past, I tested on V7's Dyreex Super Tour, Volkl Cyclone, Hyper G or BBO. I’ll try element but I appreciate more suggestions

I've been testing and trying a lot of different string combinations, both in full bed and hybrid setups. I have not played with Alu Power in full bed, but was not a huge fan of it in a hybrid with NXT Power (Wilson Duo Power string pack). It was okay, but I cut it out in favor of the Luxilon ECO playtest.

I still consider 4g rough in the mains and NXT Control in the cross as my go-to string, but I haven't played with it in a while. I REALLY liked the Babolat RPM Rough 17 mains with Xalt 16 crosses during that playtest. So much so, that I want to do a side-by-side comparison at some point in the near future.

I currently have a full bed of Babolat Xalt 16 in one racquet and full bed of Technifibre X-1 17 in the other. I prefer hybrids, but I'm really liking both of these setups as well. I think you should consider giving the Xalt a try. The spin I was generating on my serves yesterday was impressive...especially for a multi. It's better in the control/spin department than some of the full bed poly setups that I've played.

Since you’re already familiar with Dyreex, I am 5h into a super tour 1.25 stringjob and am liking it, but preferred alu tour 1.25 for a slightly more lively response. Another string I liked was head hawk 1.25 (a bit more controlled than alu tour, better tension maintenance and similar durability - both last around 10h). I’m currently using lynx tour 1.25 mains with a softer cross (either multi or syngut 1.30 or 1.35 although durability is quite bad, around 4-5h tops. I tried restringing the crosses only but that string job with restrung crosses never actually feels fresh). I also tried lynx tour full bed but it was a bit less predictive, more launchy and with worse feel. Mayami tour hex 1.23 had better feel than lynx tour but it was more launchy/lively so I didn’t love it either. With mayami hit pro 1.25 fb I couldn’t feel anything, it was like hitting cotton-balls with a soft pillow - I’m not a fan of soft strings in this frame (maybe they work best at higher tensions?). Firestorm 1.25 fb also felt overly soft/muted on this frame although I like this string and will probably try it again at higher tension. I was excited to try solinco tour bite 1.25 fb but ended up hating it and cutting after 30min - I’m not a fan of shaped strings fb on about any frame - felt too stiff and it had no power. This is all my string experience in the blade v8, hopefully it gives you an idea on what to try next.

@what_army I refused to use anymore DST because off catapult effect, so if alu tour is more lively, I believe it isn't my cup of tea. I agree with you about hybrid setups duration, is a waste of money. I've been read about others strings not too stiff, and decided to test the grapplesnake toursniper: close to ALU sensations, softer and good tension mantenience. On paper sonds great... we'll see the reality. Anybody tested on this frame?

I’ll take any rests of a Dyreex super tour reel you may want to get rid of? But yes alu tour is a bit livelier. At what tension do you string? I have my super tour 1.25 at 23kg on this frame and it works fine. It’s on the dead side at first although it does lose tension and opens up a bit but overall it’s very much on the control side I’d say. Another string I forgot to mention was topspin cyberflash which is soft but very crisp and complements this frame well.

Anyone had experience adding lead to the 98 16m? Now that I’ve seen how much better my PSVS plays with lead at 12, I’m wondering about modding the Blade. But it’s much head-heavier than the Strike so I’m worried about that making it less maneuverable. It’s already at a pretty good static weight and I don’t want to make it too clunky by weighting both the hoop and handle (to keep the balance), but I’d also like to experiment with boosting the power. Thoughts?

What round strings are y’all liking in the 18x20 blade?

I like Element but am looking for something a bit more stiff/controlled. I’m not planning to try 4G as I don’t want to gamble with my arm.

I’ve got a couple sets of Poly Tour Strike 1.25 and Razor Soft 1.25 headed my way. Just curious what others are liking.

I agree with your choice. When grip protector were removed, weight will go down to 306 grams’ish. In the same way, swingweight and balance will decrease too (293 and 32.6 aprox).

Nice specs too close than mines

Enjoy!!

Thanks! Will check the rackets myself for weight and balance, just to make sure I got the rackets with the specs TWE provided. If they’re good to go, I’ll slap on a leather grip.

Guessing the answer to this is no, which means maybe my next experiment will be with more powerful strings, not adding lead. I'll try ditching the poly and go with NRG or Triax maybe.

If you have the materials, then no harm in giving it a try. You can always remove it.

For strings I’d suggest trying a poly-multi hybrid. The multi will give you a bit extra pop and depth, while still getting some control from the poly. You’ll have to string the multi higher than the poly, but make sure the difference isn’t bigger than 3-4 lbs.

Annoying. I received the rackets today, but they messed up. Instead of receiving rackets 2 and 6 I received 2 and 8...

Well, I just swung them both and noticed a significant difference. Racket 8 really feels (head)heavier compared to racket 2.

I don't really understand, maybe someone can explain how could a racquet be head heavier compared to other when they both have absolutely the same swingweight.

I am very curious, I don't have the knowledge to unlock such mysteries.

It's your money, they should give you what you paid for. Even if the specs were identical, the goal is for you to like what you bought and if it feels weird for any reason, then you should exchange it for the one you want. I will say that my experience with TW customer service is amazing -- I think you'll have no trouble getting the right second stick ASAP.

This is very puzzling to me because when I bought my 3 blades v8 (18x20) this is what TWE sent me:

Racquet Weigth SW Balance Flex
1 310g 282 32,2 63
2 307,9g 302 32,5 61
3 308,8g 292 31,9 62
4 310,3g 286 32,3 63
5 307,7g 288 31,8 62
6 308g 280 32,1 63
7 308,5 289 31,7 64
8 308,1 297 32,4 62

The flex in definitely lower in my batch and the SW far less consistent. This was 6-7 months ago.

I’ve asked TWE to provide the correct racket. Let’s see what they will say.

My rackets are from a new supply of V8. I had a back order and I had to wait about a month.

Maybe I got lucky with this batch, who knows. But they are in the V8 paintjob.
My guess is that the tighter QC parameters were implemented towards the end of the V8 production run ahead of the V9. I got 6 V8 18M from Wilson, measured and kept 2. The specs overall were quite a bit closer than what I was used to with Wilson. I ended up with 2 identically matched stock frames.

Doesn’t explain the difference in flex between his batch and mine. I’m saying V9 under v8 paint. Plenty of posts alluding to the same being true with V8 noir.

Good point. I don’t have the ability to measure flex but maybe I should take my V8s somewhere to be measured. I bought my V8s direct from Wilson well after the Noir came out, so it would be an interesting data point.

I think the blade 98 may have briefly sold out (or was close to) at some point during the Q4 last year. Stock was already lowish when I bought mine in june. At least at TWE.

Thats pretty interesting, I got matching service for the blades as well from TWE a few days ago and these were mine:

Went for 1 & 3 as I can put 2 grams around 10 and 2 to get the exact same balance, swingweight and weight. But definitely on the head heavy side - higher stiffness and higher swingweight than the blades advertised online. Or well yeah wilson QC could also just be meh

Other than racquet #2, which could well be from the old batch or simply having a few QC issues, the rest are pretty consistent. If this is how V9 is going to turn out then colour me impressed. Time will tell.

I have added weight to my Blade Noir’s and they play fantastic. Changed the frames for me. Much more stable, more plow and still very maneuverable. Final strung specs are 338g, 333SW, 7 pt balance.

Thanks to the famous Wilson QC, my 3 frames were all different but for the most part I added weight at 3, 9 and from 10 to 2. Counterbalanced with an overgrip and weight in the handle.

Just got some Noirs. Eager to try them. They were a little under spec in terms of swingweight. The other thing I noticed was they don't seem to have the same exo friendly grommets as the regular V8. They seem more like the v7.

My Noirs came in at 281 and 286 swing weight. 307 and 309 grams with the plastic on the handle. Have added weight under the grommets at 12 to bring the unstrung swingweight to 298.

Also crazy that there are 60 RA unstrung frames in the batches. That would be uber soft. Explains why there are lot of comments about the v8 lacking power plus the swingweight variances.

Yes mine are 62ra unstrung although I did up the swingweight to play just under 330. I was playing with the v4 last year before changing and that model is a beast, it was like hitting with a hammer. The v8 doesn’t have that easy power but on the other hand the feel is amazing and is much more manoeuvrable. All in all, I am happy with the change but of course no racquet will give you everything you need. A V8 with a bit more power and better QC (if that’s really what the V9 will be) is a great value proposition.

The v4 was a beast and my favourite before the v8. I used to think how does such a low static weight frame plays so stable and powerful. It didn't make sense :)

I haven't measured the RA on my V8s, but am pretty confident from the way they play after adding lead at 12 to get the 330 swingweight that it slightly softer than the v4. I would guess mine are around 63 strung. I find my V8s to play like a more refined v4, a bit less vibration and overall cleaner hitting experience. For me it is the perfect Blade.

So I guess it comes down to QC lottery on what experience you get with the v8.

In my case, 22 Kg (48,5 pounds). First 2 hours were nice, but when string starts to get stuck, it feels like hitting with a frying pan. Anyway, Element or ECO Rough are in my to-do list :)

The only positive is the fantastic paintjob.
The V7 is a keeper and I'll try

If you have the materials, then no harm in giving it a try. You can always remove it.

For strings I’d suggest trying a poly-multi hybrid. The multi will give you a bit extra pop and depth, while still getting some control from the poly. You’ll have to string the multi higher than the poly, but make sure the difference isn’t bigger than 3-4 lbs.

Just curious, why does it have to be strung higher?

Multifilament has more power and is softer on the arm compared to poly. So you have to string higher, otherwise you will lose control.

Why shouldn’t string it with a difference higher than 2-3 lbs… I read it somewhere I believe the gist was that if the difference is too big the crosses and mains don’t support each other, but I’m not sure how much truth there is to that.

It's not a very stable frame in stock form due to the low SW. You need to weight it up and then it plays like a more comfortable 2013/2015, IMO. It's a brilliant stick and for those who wanted something similar to older generations but a tad more arm friendly, it's the one. However, In stock form it's horrible (for me anyway due to SW <325).

If you loved the V7 and were not a fan of older generation 'stiffer' blades, then this is not the one for you. It is definitely stiffer/crisper than v7 (giving more power) but because of the increased stiffness in the hoop, ball pocketing suffers slightly with the same string/tension when compared with V7.

All this is for 18m btw, I have not tried the 16m and have no interest in trying it.

I have not had any arm issues with it yet and will be switching from V7 to this V8. However, I will keep the V7 incase this gives me arm issues in the future.

How did you customize it?

I love them! Fits me miles better than the vcore 98 even before I get fully adjusted to the blade. great on the serve and at the net (even with my HH balance from QC)!

I added lead to nr 3. to match it to nr1. Strung up with 57lbs wilson sensation comfort multifilament
