If it does go 3 sets and Blake does win, the third set will be something like 6-1. It cannot be 7-6 because that would mean that Safin is playing well, and if he's playing well than he will win in straight sets. He can put a lot of pressure on Blake, and we all know how Blake does under pressure.
My prediction is that the rallies will be short and Safin will beat himself by hitting easy balls long. He might play well for a set and win it, but that's as far as he'll go. Hopefully I'm wrong.
really?
just b/c the third set would potentially be close doesn't mean Safin is playing well that day. Look at his results. It is very common for him to vary wildly in his level of play form set to set....it is not uncommon for him to come out flat, then pick it up as the match goes on, and this year, he's done that and still lost on several occasions. He has also started out strong, bageling Hidalgo in the firs set in Rome, then going on to lose the next two sets in tiebreakers....or in Wimbledon, he took the first two sets vs. Gonzo, then lost the next three by one break. That is the thing about Safin....there is no rhyme or reason. Gaudio is the only top 20 player he has beaten in straight sets this year.
This year, Safin has lost 13 times, and 9 of the losses, he lost the last set by one break or less....he lost 7 times in 3 sets or more, and in 4 of those, the last set he lost by one break or less.
It is true though that a couple of those other losses were as you described, but the truth is, he's actually lost quite a few close matches in disappoointing fashion this year.
If it were a daytime match in the heat, I could see Safin tanking in the third set, but at night vs. the no.5 player in the world? Could happen, but unlikely.
