This match was un-freaking-believable!!!

Started off pretty normal, everyone holding serve. Then, at 3 all, with thunder in the background, Blake finds an opening and has two break points. Safin saves the first. Safin serving 30-40, and the rain comes down.

This is typical DC weather, especially with how humid it has been. Storms just blow right through though, so after about a half hour to 45 minutes, they start clearing off the court. They've got all their crews out, they've got blowers out, they're cleaning the lines with towels, and just as they put out the chairs for the players...it starts raining AGAIN! Not a thunderstorm this time, but about a 10-15 minute additional delay. A good time for the bathroom and some food! It finally stopped again, they turned the blowers on, and dried off the court one more time.

Blake and Safin come back out and warm up. At this point I'm thinking Blake has an advantage coming out right into a breakpoint. If Safin isn't immediately on, Blake gets the break. And he did. And then he was broken right back. Argh!!! Eventually, everybody gets back on serve and we're in the first set tiebreak. Blake was up initally, but Safin came charging back and took it.

Ok, I'm still not worried, I'm thinking Blake will definitely pull out the second set. And after a shirt change, he had a hot streak. But once again, here comes Safin. You could almost see him get close to exploding at times, but he really held himself together mentally. Honestly, I was expecting him to fall apart after winning that first set.

The second set tiebreak was *unbelievable*. Safin had multiple matchpoints. Double faults to give one away. Gives a few more away. Safin is up 6-5, Blake hits a deep ball and approaches the net. Safin *fired* a passing shot that clips the top of the net....and bounces right past a surprised Blake, and lands...in.

Yes, Safin's match winning shot was a lucky net cord.

I have pics that I will post in my "Legg Mason Day 6" post, probably in the morning.

Blake has nothing to be ashamed of, he played very well. He goes for his shots, that is his game. Safin was in form, though, and just had the edge when it mattered. I would love to see Safin go all the way now.

imho Safin is a giant killer. He likes the big matches with top players ie Sampras us open final. I predict Safin in straights. It seems when he goes up against the best he rises, and looses focus in early round matches that to him mean nothing.

Safin In Straights!

AGREED FOR LIFE.....HE IN A WAY SEEMS ARROGANT (NOT IN A BAD WAY) WHEN AGAINST LESSER PLAYERS KNOWING HE CAN BEAT THEM BUT AT THE SAME TIME ATTEMPTING TO DO IT WITHOUT TRYING....THEN HE PLAYS HIS HARDEST VS PLAYERS THAT ARE REALLY GOOD....

LIKE IF HE WAS IN COLLEGE HE WOULDNT PLAY HARD VS A HIGHSCHOOL KID BUT VS A HIGHER DIVISION COLLEGE PLAYER HE WOULD TRY AND ROCK HIS HARDEST
SO SAD THAT THE MOTIVATION ISN'T THERE TO BEAT JUST ANY PLAYER LIKE IT IS FOR OTHERS WHO DON'T HAVE QUITE THE TALENT

Well put. Safin also just lost to a qualifier in Cincy (meant Indy). And Gonzo in LA (I attended) I dont think he see's Gonzo as his equal. So he's a little more hungry to show results

 Cincy doesn't start for another 2 weeks.

That could be part of Safin's curse. Everyone keeps going on about how talented he is and how he should be up there with Federer and Nadal. He sees Federer at 40% beating guys handily, so he thinks he can do the same. He's in a match, he wins the first set, he feels like he's easily the better player and he should be able to finish this off quickly. And then the mistakes start pouring in, he gets pissed off at himself, more mistakes. He has a much better game than the other guy, how could he be losing? He goes for more, he misses. It's over. Then Peter Lundgren goes and tells him that he's an even bigger talent than Federer, so Safin goes back into that mindset.

When he's playing a top player, an equal, with a game that he has respect for, that's when he pulls out the good stuff. There's no shame in losing to James Blake so there's less pressure. As long as he plays his best and keeps the match competitive, no one can call him any less of a talent.

no the reason he plays well is cuz these guys hit hard and don't change up the pace as much. That's why Safin has trouble playing people like Lopez who wait for him to mess up.

sounds pretty awesome. i wish i could have been there...

Nice win for Safin and great to see him holding it together and not losing his head - now he's my favorite to win this tourney

What is wrong with Blake??

How do you lose against a guy who is ranked 90 something! And you are ranked 5th in the world!??????

You cant really think of Safin as 90th as he certainly has the capacity to play top 3 tennis any given day. That's not saying he's a top 3 player anymore due to his wild inconsistency but whereas guys in the rankings around him (Gimelstob, Pless, Reynolds, etc...) are no threat to guys in the top 10, I dont think anyone wants to see Safin in the early rounds or for that matter would be all that suprised about taking a loss to him..
