Blog - Former DI college player trying to go pro.

While he was working here Andy was using the Prince Warrior, customized with lead. About a month ago he switched to the Yonex RDiS 100 Mid, in stock form. He is stringing with Volkl Cyclone, not sure of the tension.

Kind of difficult to follow him unless we know his full name. It is not in the blog.

Since they haven't revealed his name I won't either, but there is enough information given to find it out if you would like.

He played in the Chico qualifiers and lost in the first round 4-6 6-4 6-4. Send me a message if you need any more help.

Andy Gerst is his full name. Yes we are sponsoring him and he is a former TW employee. He's 23, just having a go at becoming a pro and what you are reading are his first experiences on the road as a pro, not a collegiate player.

Several more blogs since we last posted. Read them all here (go from the bottom up for chronological order):

Thanks for the blog. It's been great reading so far. Good luck to Andy as he travels through the country on his quest, I hope he can make it!

Thanks. I will be following. I have always been interested in what it takes for juniors rising up and trying to take the step to professional.

Good luck.
I have some experience there too.
Would like to see some more insight, thoughts, travel thoughts, training, and the general ups and downs of playing top level every moment of every day.

In Roseburg he won the doubles event and lost in the final of singles (beating the guy he lost to in Chico along the way).

lol its funny how every couple of years we get delusional college "on his way" to the top 100. The last one was Will-Boe wiegand or something like that.

So is TW actually giving him money or gear to do this blog?

In the future, I think it would make it easier on the readers if he includes the names of his opponents, rather than referring just to their qualifications. It saves those of us that are interested from having to go look up the draws to see who he's talking about.

3 sets vs Angelo is very good. Tough draw in the PNW Championships. Will have to fight through a few current/former D1 players, just for a date with Roman in the semis.

^^^
Andy made it to the semis, was serving for the match in the 2nd set against Roman, but ended up losing in 3. His blog about all this should be posted later today.

Andy Gerst,,why does that name sound familiar to me ??? did he play against stanford during his career in college ?

Pretty interesting - personally a little more detail about the tournaments - the facilities, do they provide anything to the players - drinks etc., rather than the motivational stuff would be good. But I will be following this.

Good luck Andy

yeh, the motivational stuff is not as interesting as the details, in my view, what are the venues like, the TD's, the other players, food, socialising, where do you stay every night, are you slumming it etc

Did you actually read his blog? I don't think he is delusional at all.

Grow up, Andy is a great, super nice guy.

We all wish we could do what he is doing.

^^ AG - kudos to your latest blog. nice writing that keeps one interested (not to much fluff, etc that distracts the reader). did u major in journalism or something?

I'm really enjoying Andy's blog. While I may not be trying to go pro, I've set my goal to reach the Grand Prix tournament here in Norcal in which the top 8 teams (or players for singles) at the end of the GP season are invited to play.

I've been trying to incorporate the way he prepares for his matches mentally to my preparation and it's been really helpful.

Keep doing what you're doing Andy!

Question to Andy: there is always a raging debate that goes on in the Tips section about wrist snap on the serve. Practically none of the people who argue play at the pro or semi-pro level. Do you snap your wrist on the serve?

It's called "Pronation" and Pronation is a term you'll here a lot when higher-level tennis players discuss proper serve technique. Pronation is a special type of arm movement that allows you to accelerate your tennis racket through the ball, increasing the amount of power and spin you can generate. All advanced players pronate when they serve, but very few club-level players pronate properly.
