Blog - Former DI college player trying to go pro.

sorry to read AG couldn't get into any other draws. curious how his travel buddies fared. anyway recommend Central America next time...the flight might be shorter. :)

Any updates on Andy's schedule? I'd be interested to know where he's playing the next few months. Should be good to follow now that he has some points and should get seeded in qualifiers.

Oooh, well, I hope not. By what it sounds like in his other posts he shouldn't be playing a match for another month at least. It's difficult to hold yourself back when you are addicted to tennis, but you have to think long term.

If he is in there, could you please provide a link Shanx? Thanks!

I see they got a nice upset in their last doubles round. Congrats! Also, I did some looking at the singles draw and saw he wasn't playing in it. Anyone know the reason for this? Thanks

He probably didn't want to risk a singles match right after his recovery. Can't blame him for that. :)

In his latest video blog, he said that his knee wasn't quite ready for singles yet, so he pulled out of the singles. He said that he will be playing a couple of futures and a challenger in Canada starting at the end of February, and then he hopes to play a couple of futures in Alabama and Arkansas after that.

next round looks pretty good for andrew. di feo is a well-ranked junior in quebec, but doesnt have that d1 experience and match toughness

I like your last blog. And tough as it is, most of us would give up another day in our cubes/at the office for a few weeks traveling Southeast Asia playing tennis and following our dreams. Best of luck to you.

Pretty interesting - personally a little more detail about the tournaments - the facilities, do they provide anything to the players - drinks etc., rather than the motivational stuff would be good. But I will be following this.
Yeah, so far, I'm wishing I was "there" more. Right now I'm just mostly in his head. But I'm still reading. Seems like a nice guy. Scary to think as "unimpressive" as his tennis accomplishments are, he's beaten a top 600 guy, he would completely destroy most of us. Tennis is so deep. The top guys are just freaks.

edit: take it back after reading some more... enough details there... man, the tour at that level sounds like such a freakin' grind. Awesome that he's getting this experience. I wonder how much better he thinks he is NOW compared to his college peak.

I just looked and Andy lost in the first round to no.760 Takuto Niki 6-4,6-3. Niki lost to a 300's ranked player in the next round. I'll be interested to hear Andy's summary on his match with Niki. Keep working on it Andy ...

Wonder where he gets his funding from? He's been slogging it out for a couple of years now and doesn't really have any good results to show for it. Which means no money coming in, but he still has the funds to travel halfway across the world. Not hating at all, love that he's living the dream, but I know golfers, for instance, can do this easily by traveling domestically.

Based on this blog, I thought Gerst started his quest last summer. Do you know something we don't?

Saw the "archives" going back to 2009, but realized that didn't reflect his playing on the tour. Misspoke. I don't know anything you all don't. Unless it regards quantum physics.

I understand the joke, because it is mentioned in all popular scientific articles. No need for me to go through the abyss.

is andy playing the tournament at USC this weekend. im playing the 4.5 mens and thought i saw his name in the open division. i think his match was right before mine. ill have to catch a few points.

Why does Andy Gerst's ATP rankings page show him with zero singles ranking points, and lists him with zero points from the Laos tournament that started the week of November 1, 2010?

Numerous posts on this board showed him winning a main draw match after coming through qualifying.

EDIT: Because the page defaulted to showing his doubles ranking, which is silly because it usually does that only when the player is higher ranked in doubles than singles, which Andy is not. The zero points I was looking at were in doubles.

Nice win by Josh Zavala to get into the second round, but I'm shocked that Ed Corrie got double bageled by Wang....hard to believe.

Hello TW_Staff,

really, this is one of the most interesting blog I have ever seen! Credits to Andy and you for posting always nice stories.

I'm interested in the financial aspects of Andy. He is travelling a lot (f.e. Thailand etc), and I think this isn't cheap. Does Andy have good sponsors? Does he make a lot of money with tournaments that he can pay everything on his own?

I will visit college for 4 years now, starting in august. After that I'm thinking to try going pro also. But my biggest worriers are the financial aspects.

THank you for you reply, HybriD

He has mentioned that on one of his blogs. He plays lots of money tournaments to finance himself. It pays for his tourneys, but it takes away from ATP points he absolutely needs.
