I am terribly curious about Verdasco. Will he make good on the promise he showed at the ozzie?

Probably one of the most interesting ones to watch, hope he's over his injury and that his success at the AO doesn't blow up in his face here ><

I like Novak Djokovic

hadn't noticed =p

Hewitts ranking on the rise...IW has been a happy hunting ground for him in the past. The desert conditions should suit Hewitt well.

mmm I hope he puts in a good showing, he looked in pretty good shape in Memphis

Wildcard Entries Announced for the 2009 BNP Paribas Open

Australian Open quarterfinalist and former World No. 4 ranked star Jelena Dokic headlines the wildcard entries granted today by the BNP Paribas Open, to be held March 9-22 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, it was announced today by tournament director Steve Simon.

Dokic exploded onto the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in 1999 at Wimbledon, as a qualifier, when she beat then World No.1 Martina Hingis in the first round. The following years saw multiple Grand Slam semifinal appearances, multiple titles and a top 10 world ranking. An elbow injury derailed the rising star in 2004 and the following three years she hardly competed on the circuit, but her career enjoyed a rebirth at this year’s Australian Open when she reached the quarterfinals, falling to eventual finalist Dinara Safina. She is currently ranked No. 81 in the world, an astonishing climb from her year-end ranking in 2008 of No. 178.

Taylor Dent, a former top 30 ranked star who also has recovered from a career-threatening injury, leads a group of American men that received wildcards into the main draw. He recently returned to the ATP World Tour after recovering from back surgery and won his first match in almost two years at Brisbane in January. John Isner, one of the tallest men on tour at 6’9”, has steadily improved since his All-American career at the University of Georgia and reached the quarterfinals at Auckland earlier this year. Wayne Odesnik and Ryan Sweeting both have continued to improve their world ranking and have USTA Challenger victories at Carson and Dallas respectively. In addition to the Americans, Kevin Anderson of South Africa, who won the first tournament of his career last year in Las Vegas, was also granted a wildcard.

On the women’s side, three American women, Vania King, Alexa Glatch and Melanie Oudin, will join Dokic in the field. King and Glatch, both from Southern California, have good results this year with King reaching the round of 16 at Memphis and Glatch adding the fifth ITF title of her career at Laguna Nigel, California. Oudin, who has won a number of ITF Junior titles over the course of her young career, went 1-1 in USA's 3-2 Fed Cup World Group first round win over Argentina earlier this year.

In addition to the three Americans, a quartet of international stars also accepted wildcards today including former top 20 ranked Indian star and 2009 Australian Open doubles champion Sania Mirza, 2007 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Michaella Krajicek, 2007 Wimbledon Junior champion Urszula Radwanska, and rising junior star Alja Tomljanovic.

Wildcards for the men’s qualifying draw were awarded to Alex Domijan and Lester Cook. Wild cards for the women’s qualifying draw were awarded to Petra Martic, Coco Vandeweghe, Julia Boserup, Asia Muhammad and Angela Haynes. Two other qualifying draw wildcards (one man, one woman) will be given to the winners of the pre-qualifying round of the BNP Paribas Open Challenge tournament, to be held March 7-8 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

so no WC for marcos... :(

They really should put an end to sponsor naming of tournaments. Nevertheless, I'll continue to refer to it as the Indian Wells Open.

Where is the order of play for Monday ?

You're that anxious for the women's qualifying rounds?

For someone who claims to have been a tennis player/fan for more than 20 years, you sure have a hard time remembering that this event starts main draw matches on Wednesday and Thursday.

Almagro isn't going to play, he chose to take some more rest after the south american clay season.

Look for Sam Querry to make a good showing here. I predict he will reach the Semi finals. I just saw on TTC that he bought a new house. very impressive. must making lots of money in endorsements ???

no he won't, don't worry ! ;)
this is the "entry list" that was posted... which means the ATP entry rankings some weeks ago, for deciding who will enter directly into the main draw.
but for the seeds, they'll use the fresh rankings of tomorrow (monday)...

good explanation.
(and updates were promised by the OP)

Qualifying Entry List

1 Bellucci, Thomaz BRA 64

I'll be very interested to see how Bellucci does at IW. In his 3 HC events of 2009, he was taken out in qualies or very early round. But he has done very well on clay, finalist in Brazil.

Looking to see how he'll do on hard after those clay match victories.

Fascinating combo: Snow and palm trees.

This will be my first Indian Wells experience.
Should be very, very entertaining :)

And I thought that for seeds they use rankings of a couple of weeks ago. How could they use this Monday's rankings if the tournament started on Sunday or even Monday.
they couldn't !
(usually they take the rankings of the week before)
but this is one of the particularities of IW/miami... to start late in the week, so freshest rankings (than usual) are available.

by the way... the rankings are not "ready" yet (at least they weren't earlier in the day on atptennis.com, see zaragoza's thread), with this davis cup points mess !
they have to fix that before IW's start. ;)

I think a lot of people aren't being realistic about Federer. Federer hasn't won a Masters Series title since Cincinnati 2007, and even performing the way he generally has for the last 14 months, I don't see why he would be the favorite any more than two or three other guys- and not only is this the case, but in addition, Federer currently hasn't played a match in over a month and has purportedly been suffering from continued back problems.

Of course, on the other hand, Nadal has had knee problems lately, Djokovic has been out of form, and Murray has been sick, so Federer may be on equal footing with them. I think this tournament has real potential for something of a surprise winner; Roddick and Tsonga stand out as guys who've been consistently putting out excellent results thus far this year.

Murray is heading for IW. Posted in the last couple of hours on twitter:

“Headed off to the states. Not 100% yet, but feeling better for sure. Catch you later, andy..”

Sadly I agree. As much as I want Federer to win, reality says Murray and Nadal are the big favorites here. Of course, Federer can always show up as the Fed of old and crush everyone on his way to the trophy.

Fascinating combo: Snow and palm trees.

This will be my first Indian Wells experience.
Should be very, very entertaining :)

Great picture... the snowline doesn't usually reach quite that low in Palm Springs, though :)

And I thought that for seeds they use rankings of a couple of weeks ago. How could they use this Monday's rankings if the tournament started on Sunday or even Monday.

No tournaments don't use the rankings 'of a couple weeks ago' to make a draw. All tournaments use the most current rankings that are in effect at the very moment the draw is made. For IW, that means they get to use today's rankings.

Where the frig is the men's quali draw? Supposed to be out today no?

I thought it was due out at 6 pm Pacific time? And the rankings mess could be holding them up a bit. Keep checking. :)

Thiago Alves is in the qualifying draw?! He shouldn't be playing tennis. He should be thinking about his upcoming fight with GSP. :)

I hope Bellucci makes it into the main draw. Can't lose with Bellucci.

Anyone here going to the tournament? I'll be there with a couple of friends until Saturday night.

Does anybody know what the exact ITF court pace rating for this tournament surface is or how to find out? I know in the past it was rated at 28 but that info is a few yrs old. Per the ITF ratings are as follows:

Surfaces are categorised as follows:

Category CPR
Slow ≤ 29
Medium-slow 30-34
Medium 35-39
Medium-fast 40-44
Fast ≥ 45

Table 2. Court Pace Rating categories.

It is just like Roger, isn't it ? He is too injured to play Davis cup but he is just fine to play in Indian wells, just few days later...

He could have just played the singles, beaten Blake and Roddick pretty easily, and considering that Wawrinka beat Blake on the first day, the SUI could have won without playing doubles. Good warmup for IW. He must have figured that he didn't want to play DC in the fall . . . Stan must be steamed, he put in eleven sets in three days for one win.
