Boland leaves Baylor

Can confirm there were going to be issues; not 100% sure those will see light of day now

B-b-but I thought he cared so much about developing Brooksby into a fine scholar-athlete? Well, anyway, enjoyed watching UF absolutely pummel his boys in the NCAA quarters.

Wow! Just had a bizarre response to my last post. It was taken down before I could log in. I could screenshot and share from my email but will just say it was very provocative. Guessing more info to come on this story.

I've told my Brian Boland story before. He went to St. Cloud Tech high school in St. Cloud Minnesota - state tennis power at the time (late 80s, early 90s). I played him in the Minnesota Section 8 team tournament final and lost. In Minnesota there's an entire team tournament separate from the individual tournament, like NCAAs.

Many year later, when he popped up as UVA coach, I thought the name sounded familiar and sure enough, it was him. All the way from St. Cloud to UVA and NCAA titles - I'm a little surprised he left.

ZooTennis said he was asked to resign. The plot thickens.

Does it have anything to do with University female student(s)? People just don't resign effectively immediately like that.

Remind me of my company former COO. He also resigned effectively immediately. Few days later, it was found out he was asked to resign immediately due to "confirmed" sexual harrassment of subordinates and allowed to kep his 400k/year pension or get fired and collected nothing.

I don’t know.

You mean "pummel" the same way Yuya Ito pummeled your boy UF Sam Riffice at the 2019 ITA final?

well, i've only spoken with respect towards the Texas program over the past 12 months - Ito and their entire team were extremely impressive / talented / composed (both when i watched them compete on their way to the title in Orlando, and when I watched them take down UF in Gainesville)

but neither compares to the beatdown Baylor received at the hands of UF in the NCAA quarters - it's honestly hard for me to explain how much I enjoyed watching Jimmy Bendeck cry during his final career singles match, a 6-1, 6-0 beatdown from Kessler in front of relentless UF fans

I have no similar respect for Baylor and Boland trying to bring one-and-done to men's college tennis - glad to watch him leave Baylor with his tail between his legs, the same way he left the courts at Lake Nona last I saw him

Agree with this, the program has been corrupt since the Knoll was there, I don't know what it is about the coaches there (Art Briles football and Dave Bliss basketball) are two others who come to mind.

Yeah I saw they have nick stachowiak coming on board to tennis team for this next season. That’s big, he was #1 for Duke last year from what I see. Anyone know if others are joining and if Jenson Brooksby still staying?

#26 ranked Dartmouth's #1 line player last year, Charlie Broom, is also grad transferring to Baylor along with Spencer Furman who played line 3 at Duke last year. Broom and Stachowiak look about the same caliber players with Furman a notch below. Furman and Stochowiak formed a really good doubles team last year at Duke. No word on Brooksby yet but I'm expecting him to turn pro. Brooksby did not get to play one match last year since he was out with a foot injury.

He has a great record, sure, but I hated one of his sons when I had to play a team match against his high school last year. Not even trash talking, just straight up a-holes. I'd be happy to talk more about it if y'all want. Borderline happy that he might be (or is) out of a job.

why don't you start spilling the bean? I would like to know.

I go to a minority-majority high school about 45 minutes away from Waco-Midway. Low income, mainly single-parent raised, the whole package. My HS itself has seen better days, but the education quality is the best in my district. Tennis is not a priority for my team, a priority is being the first one to go to college in their family, or even just to graduate high school.

It was a home match, and we were crushed, as expected. Top 1 or 2 varsity put up a little fight, but we can't compete with kids who train with Baylor players, tennis center coaching, and triple the income. The Midway team, including the Boland son, ripped into us. Our top girl at the time said she was told she should "just quit" because she can't win and our team already lost, so WacoMW can go home. She had a complete breakdown when they left. During my singles match they cheered during my double faults and were very audible from the benches. The Boland son straight up asked ME, "Why is your team not good." During the lower-ladder matches, where my team is comprised of kids who were picking up racquets for their first year, Boland and the WMW team would cheer and shout VERY obnoxiously upon a won point or match. In-between change overs they would discuss how lowly they should play and still win.

@jangotango , Shake it off, don't look back. There are loads of sociopaths and predators in the world. Probably plenty on these forums. Try and avoid them. When you can't avoid them move on as quickly as possible. Best not to engage them at the moment of umbrage. I've been in your shoes and coached kids in non-tennis sports in your shoes. Because I have been places and done things that people shouldn't have to I look at the kinds of people you played nowadays with a certain "grim" humor. As far as tennis goes if someone acts without character I simply walk off the court, bag my racket and go home. I have zero time for such nonsense. Thanks for your story. Paints a picture of Boland I'll always remember.

That sucks, how did these guys do at State against some of the top ranked teams from Dallas, San Antonio or Houston ?

Will wait for @jangotango 's answer but guessing is this happened this year there was not state tournament. If the story is true and I have no reason to disbelieve it, says alot about Boldand's coaching/parenting to not instill some humility in his boys around other tennis players, especially those who are less skilled in tennis not to mention from less fortunate backgrounds.

I'm not sure. Waco Midway High School has a very strong boys team, and I do believe they've made it to state a few times. They've won districts every year for maybe the past 5 years? Top 20 for 6A I believe. But when it comes to scholastic tennis, I don't think the coach or team has much of a role. It's mainly the fact the kids can afford academy coaching, lessons, and gear honestly. Sure, it boils down to whether or not you want to put in the work, but it's an undeniable fact that making triple the income frees up time and resources.

If you play them again maybe you can prolong the match so they can enjoy their bullying more. Take the full 30 or more seconds between points. Accidentally kick the ball so you have to walk an additional distance to pick up the ball. Take a few bathroom breaks. Change your shirt. Tie your shoes. Take extra time during the changeovers. See if you can drag a 2 out of 3 set match into 4 or 5 hours.

Bring a book to read during the changeovers. Read for a couple minutes before getting up from the bench. Give them a recap.

Ask them during the changeover, "Do you have any friends?"

I have always felt that the behavior and attitude of a team is a reflection of the coach. I've had some of my teams play matches where they were tremendously overmatched. I simply told them to play as hard as they could, to play hard up to the end, and then shake hands and move on. Always, always behave as an adult. I maintained that they could not control an opponent's behavior, so it is best to ignore is as much as one is able.

I had very few behavior problems, whether we had a good season or a bad one. But then, the players saw me everyday at school, as they walked by my classroom, or worse, when I checked into why they were late for school. I checked out Midway's coach. He is also a teacher. His priorities must be different from mine. I was happy to turn out tennis players who went on to successful careers, and kept playing tennis years later.

But, I digress. Sorry! I am rather interested in why Mr. Boland is no longer Coach Boland. Baylor seems to have a history of irregularities. Must be something in the water supply at Waco.

@jangotango @onehandbh @NoChance Off topic, but related to posts on HS tennis, how should a higher ranked team play vs a much lower ranked HS team? I agree there should be no teasing, but is it OK for higher team to quietly and efficiently dispatch lower ranked team while treating opponents with respect or should they show mercy? .

@jangotango, I thought Texas HS coaches were using UTR to schedule competitive nonregional matches within a close drive. Hope your team has more competitive matches this year if they get to play.

Could we please start another thread for high school tennis/bad behavior if you want to talk about that........I'd like to find out why Boland was let go at Baylor? Anyone know why, seems odd?

Yeah same. It was so all of a sudden. Only thing I can think of is budget issues as many programs are probably running into. But for as much as we know. Boland was the highest paid college tennis coach In the country. Anyone know if that’s why?

Budget issues were not any part of the reasons. At least not what I’ve heard.

IMO, the stronger player can win any way they want. Personal insults, et cetera, are unnecessary.

I’m not being secretive, but it’s not my business to share. I’m being respectful.
Ah ok, I can respect that. Can you at least let us know if it was Brian Boland’s doing or if it was actually the school’s decision? I hear they made him resign but not sure if true or not. And do you think any of the truth will ever actually come out?

100% his fault

Texas Team Tennis is in the Fall Season, Individuals is in the Spring

Why wouldn't it be in the public interest to know?
Baylor is a private university. Also, guessing terms of his separation may have mutually been agreed to be private. Any number of reasons could be speculated of which we may or may not ever know. Last thing and not saying any lawyers are involved, settlements may also have a requirement for non-disclosure.

A lot of curiosity and speculation around Boland's resignation. Given Boland's resume, high tennis coaching profile, big time recruits he landed for Baylor and unusually short tenure, his departure understandably comes with questions. I'm more curious myself as to where he'll resurface. College, pro, private club, out of the industry, etc.
