Dear Talk Tennis Members,

I am sad to say it, but my time with you has come to an end. It has been a very fun year and a half, where I had the chance to serve the community I once hailed from. You’ve taught me that there is no aspect of equipment not worth debating, no pro player spec too obscure, and no true limit to the number of times you can ask why the swingweight of an extended racket was updated. Indeed, it has been a journey.

Thank you for continuing to be the community that keeps our sport alive and well. I originally joined this forum to learn more about a game that I had become mildly interested in. Little did I know that it would inspire an addiction to tennis that would result in me coming back from the industry side to once again join my fellow tennis aficionados.

We’ve had our tensions. We’ve had our problems. But if there is one thing that I can say for certain, it’s that this forum is full of passionate tennis lovers who will go any distance to help out a fellow player. You are the people that will keep tennis alive. You are the ones that will push this game forward. Every sport needs its heart, and this forum is the heart of tennis.

A colleague of mine will take over the role of Babolat Official and become your new friend at the company. I hope you welcome him with the same open arms you used to welcome me.

Until next time,
Mansoor
Thanks so much for everything, Mansoor! I'm sure you'll be successful in your next job, if you can deal with our complaining and whining then you can do anything. :)

Bonjour!

My name is Josh Newton, and I along with a colleague of mine will be taking over for Mansoor on the Babolat Official account. We will do our best to continue the wonderful tradition that Mansoor, and Daniel before him, have created here. I will post a more thorough introduction tomorrow, but I wanted to let you know a little bit about me before I start posting. My colleague is currently at the event in Miami, but I'm sure he will introduce himself soon as well.

I've been an Inside Sales rep with Babolat for going on 6 years. Additionally, I am a member of the Babolat stringing team, and I'm headed to my fifth French Open in May. I also recently found out I'm going back for my third trip to the Western and Southern Financial Open in Cincy in August, where I have the pleasure of working alongside the P1 crew (and Drakulie!!!!).

Prior to working for Babolat, I managed a racquet specialty store in Boulder, CO, where I started stringing professionally in 1999. I became an MRT in 2004, and a Pro Tour Level 1 stringer in 2012. I was also a longtime 4.5 league and tournament player until I tore a meniscus in my left knee in 2011. I still play for fun when I can, and I'm currently using a customized Pure Control. I'll let you know my specs and string setup in my actual intro to follow.

I want to say how much I'm looking forward to the opportunity to be a part of this amazing and vibrant community. I hope we can all learn from each other, and have fun doing it. I will always do my best to provide you with answers to your questions, and when I don't know something, I will do my best to find out for you. Tennis is my passion, as I'm sure it is for most of you, and I can't wait to share that passion with all of you.

Babolat, what would you recommend as an arm friendly racquet for beginners (3.0)? I am interested in midplus or OS. Thank you.

I would be happy to make some recommendations for you. What do you play with now, and have you tried any racquets recently? Any info you can provide will help me narrow the choices. Also, do you have a history of arm problems? Is it tennis elbow or other? Or are you just trying to avoid such issues? I have suffered with tennis elbow on and off through the years, so I do know a little about it. It is a tricky thing though, because there is not one cause, so there is not one solution to it either. What is good for someone may be bad for someone else. That being said, there are some things we know to avoid. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi. New guy here. Or Josh is good too :) I remember the air sphere grips. Very comfortable, and a unique feel from the honeycomb setup of the cushioning layer. There wasn't a direct replacement per se, but our thickest, most cushioned grip now is called Xcel gel. It weighs 18 grams, and is 2.6 mm thick. We are positioning it as our most comfortable grip. It does not have a texture, ie perforations, etc, and is smooth and tacky feeling. The cushioning is from a gel like layer, but it does not feel too mushy in my opinion. Unlike previous generations of this grip, it does not feel like it has a raised ridge or contour to it, if you will. I think it's worth looking at if the specs seem okay to you.

Glad to have you Josh! :)

I'm sure this has already been asked, but are there perhaps any plans to add an extended Pure Strike to the lineup?

Also, I see that there's actually been a job question here, so I thought I'd ask you if you could refer me to a person responsible for internships at Babolat? I'm looking for ~3 month internship abroad, and I thought Babolat would be worth looking into considering my love of tennis. As to locations, I am flexible, as I'm fluent in German and English and an improving intermediate in French. If you require the business area, in general I'd say sales and marketing appeals to me most.

PS: That second paragraph made me incredibly jealous haha!

Hi, and thanks for the warm welcome!

I have not heard of any plans to offer any extended racquets to the Strike line, but I will confirm that with our product team in France and let you know.

As far as internship opportunities, I confirmed with our HR department here in the US that we already have two interns lined up for the summer, and have no plans for any additional internships at the moment. If you send me a message, I will provide a way for you to contact the appropriate people here at Babolat US and/or Europe.

Sorry to make you jealous! I've been very fortunate to have the opportunities to string for some of the world's best. It's an amazing experience, one I look forward to sharing with everyone.

Welcome Josh. Love the Pure Strike 18x20. Just got the 2017 version and it is a significant upgrade. I have being using a zepp sensor on my old racket. I would be very interested in a play version.

Congrats btw. I was a firm Wilson guy playing with a head speed and a babolat hater. Your company's responsiveness on this board and the pure strike line have converted me.

Would love to know as much about theim and the other pure strike players set ups. Especially string and tensions.

Hey Josh, its good to have you here! Gonna be purchasing a 2017 Pure Strike 18x20 in a couple days! Really looking forward to it after I switched to the 2014 Pure Strike 16x19 over a year ago!!! I'm with Boyd Clary though, I would love to hear about any information you have regarding the gear of the Pure Strikers on tour! Especially Thiem!!!

Babolat rep, congratulations on your new line of tennis bags: babolat pure 12 pack bags. I think with just a few tweaks they could be the best bags among tennis manufacturers:

1. include the more luxurious grab handles from the pure strike line of bags

2. include a lined drink compartment

3. upgrade the backpack straps--see wilson and prince tennis bags

4. maybe a little more room for extended length and OS racquets

With these revisions, I think babolat bags would be the best in the industry.

Thank you for the feedback, we will certainly pass along to our product teams. Many of the changes you saw to the Pure x12 bags came from feedback such as this so please keep it coming!

We worked very closely with Dominic in the development of the 2017 Pure Strike which also included various string setups. Today he is using a hybrid- RPM Blast 17g in the crosses and VS Natural Gut Black 16g in the mains. He's also fairly particular on his tension, rarely straying far from 25kg (~55lbs). Hope this gives you all some insight! @AeroPro Staff @Boyd Clary

I'm a beginner 3.0/3.5 player currently playing with prince o3 OS shark racquets which weigh 10.2 oz.

However, I play against better players in the 4.0 range. I want a racquet that will help me to handle the pace of shots from better players.

I think I need a heavier racquet? And possibly a racquet that is generally arm friendly in these types of matches.

Any recommendations?

A heavier racquet can certainly help you handle the pace, and can possibly be more arm friendly as well. In order to go with a heavier racquet from Babolat, you will need to go to a smaller head, and therefore a smaller sweet spot. A lot of arm issues stem from the extra shock created when contact is made outside the sweetspot, so keep this in mind. A heavier racquet can be good, because it absorbs more of the impact shock and can be more torsionally stable. However, if it's too heavy, it can cause you to hit the ball late, which is bad for the arm. What's too heavy for someone else could be perfect for you, and vice versa, so there is no magic racquet as far as being arm friendly in my experience.

I recommend you try the Pure Aero. It's roughly half an ounce heavier, and should provide you with good torsional stability on off center hits due to the Aero construction. The string pattern is fairly open as well, which provides a softer feel, and the racquet also has grommet technology at 12 and 6 to enhance spin and enlarge the sweetspot slightly. The Pure Strike 100 would also be worth trying in my opinion. Same weight and head size as the Pure Aero, but a little less powerful.

I also want to make a quick comment about string and tension. If you have or want to avoid arm issues, I don't recommend polyester based strings. If you do use them, string them loose and hybrid them with a softer string to help with shock absorption. You should also restring frequently if you are using polyester. No more than 15-20 hours of play time, and if they aren't broken, cut them out. I realize there are other factors at play here, I'm strictly speaking from an arm friendliness perspective. Good luck!

Hi Babolat o! So the Pure Aero is in its second year. Donu know when they will be releasing the new model. I know in the past for the apd they were 3 year cycles. But new chatter suggests this time around it might be a two year cycle? Thanks in advance Dan.

hi guys welcome. did babolat soc media dpt change rules re talking about paintjobbed and pro stock racquets or are you guys muffled as well.

I'm hoping with your arrival things changed and you can now discuss for example why Thiem chose to stay with old version of Strike.

There is not much to discuss. Pros take a lot of time changing racquets, sometimes they try it in the preseason but still there might be no time. Others are kind of superstitious about them, never change. Moat are happy with what they have. Like Pete admitted in his book that he must have changed before retiring. It means nothing about the quality of racquet anyway.

Agreed with this! A few more tweeks are what it needs. I'm currently using the Pure Aero French Open racquet bag, together with the PA FO edition racquet, lots of compliments on both bag and racquets. Play nicely as well!

Oh I disagree...topic comes up every year especially with new posters. Like it or not...

Why don't you just ask Thiem directly on his Facebook page? Or have you tried that already?

If Dominic (or any other player for that matter) doesn't answer you directly, what makes you think the manufacturer will?

Welcome Josh!
1. Is the Xcel Grip available in the USA?
2. Will the men's Jet Clay shoes be available in the USA in colors other than Black/White?
3. For the 6 racket pure bags, what are the main differences between this year's model and last year's Pure Aero 6 bags besides the cosmetics?
Thanks!

Hi Smokey:
  1. The Xcel Gel grip is available in the US, but the Xcel Grip has not been inline since 2013. The old Xcel used to have a more pronounced ridge to it, much like a contour grip. The Xcel Gel grip maintains the excellent cushioning, but is flatter.
  2. There are currently no plans to have any other color in the Men's Jet Clay shoe in the US.
  3. The overall dimensions of the bags are about the same (New bag is 4L larger), but they are actually more different than I thought at first. The one thermo pocket stayed essentially the same, but the new bag now has one large full length compartment in addition to the thermo, whereas the old Aero bag had two smaller full length ones. There is still a shoe/wet compartment, but it is accessed from the end of the bag instead of on top of it. The new Pure bags have two side pockets to the old Aero's one. One of them is full length, and the other is smaller, but has a hard shell protecting it on the outside. This pocket would be great for keys, phones, sunglasses, etc. Hope this helps!

Are there any new Pure Drive bags on the way in 2017? Will there be a new Pure Drive Racket in 2017? Thanks!

Do any touring pros use the Pure Aero with the stock pure aero design? It seems most players either use the VS or, as in Nadal's case, a painted, older APD. Don't see the wider, sharper beam design on many pro's rackets.
