Borg Vs McEnroe the movie

Have this been discussed in the forum? I just watched it lately, and I thought it was pretty interesting. The casting is especially on point IMHO. Borg looked like Borg and Shia did Johnny Mac a lot of justice. The cinematography was also very good for me, the ambiance, the difference between the two were captured throughout the film's color.

Thoughts?

I thought it was good and Shia did a great job as McEnroe.
But there wasn’t nearly enough scenes with tennis.

I don't know where to see it yet but borg & McEnroe didn't seem to like it very much, saying it was mostly fiction.. I guess they thought it would be more of a documentary or something..

Its in torrent and other sites if you are into that. Yes I think McEnroe said he was portrayed too much of a dck. I havent seen Borg's reaction yet though.

I thought it was a fine movie. Somewhat comparable to the Ron Howard film Rush depicting the 1976 F1 season, but not quite as good.

Iirc his point was more that they didn't need to make things up to make him look like that, they could have just used things that really happened. :D

I enjoyed it, though.

Thanks. Man do you think it also has something to do with Bjorn as a private person? He mustve hated the idea from the start.

not sure as I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds to me they assumed it was going to be a more factual movie. I only saw the trailer & they did seem to make their personalities on the extreme side.. plus weren't they pretty friendly and respectful with other, even sharing the same friend vitas? not sure if that aspect is in the movie. I guess the writers thought they had to spice things up to create a dramatic compelling story...

They respected each other throughout the movie. Before the 5th set I think or somewhere in ghe latter part of the match, Borg patted Mc and said something like good match just play your game. Idk if that was realy true or not.

I wonder if they wanted to have been part of it tbh. Seems like the creators didnt reach out with how borg and mac are sounding.

It really happened, but not at Wimbledon. It was at another tournament... but it basically happened just like that. john was getting worked up because he wasn't playing well and borg told him "relax, just play your game." And john didn't know what to make of it, but he did take borg's advice and relax and then played better and won the match.

i can't recall which tournament it was in, but it wasn't at Wimbledon... but it did happen.

It was in New Orleans in 1979.

Was going to watch it but Shia is unhinged and not a good actor.

I still might, because tennis movies are rare.

Is the movie trying to perfectly illustrate how it was in reality, then I mean the build up, their prep, basically everything they did before the match?

I'm planning to watch the movie today.

They did so in a hyperbolish way. In fact, the build up was the main focus aside from Borg's backstory.

Finished the movie few moments ago.

I think the movie was so-so. It's obvious most of it is more fictional than reality, wich Borg and Mcenroe both said at the Laver Cup. Wich is disappointing.

Borg (the actor) was depressed through the whole movie though, was he really feeling the way he did? Not one scene is he happy, just grumpy and depressed and looks like he hates everything. Cause the year after he retired from tennis. Maybe there is a connection.

I'm dissappoint.. Could have done much better rather than making so much stuff up.

Borg may say he isn't 100% happy with the film but the truth is he was super involved in it- his clothing brand did all the wardrobe (or at least all the one used by the two main characters), he and his family are specially thanked at the end of the credits and his own son acted in it. The actor who did the old Borg in the film also said in an interview that Bjorn spoke to him and told him he cried while watching the film, 'cause he felt again all what he felt when he was younger.

Those comments about not being happy with the film seems more like an act from Bjorn to not receive directly the criticism for what's wrong in the film, not because he's actually unhappy. The whole movie portraits him and his life with a lot of details and in a pretty decent way, after all.

Thats interesting to hear. Bjorn contradicting himself there .

I really wanted to like this film because I remember watching that match and how incredible a battle it was between two of my favorite tennis players at the time. The acting was decent especially of Borg by Sverrir Gudnason. Shia LaBeouf was a bit too over the top especially with his McEnroe tirades, imho. They weren't subtle yet smoldering anger to the point of an explosion like I recalled of Mac. I do respect that Shia (I believe) is right-handed and had to do action scenes as a lefty (unless they flipped the video). And sorry if there's spoilers but the movie was really more about Borg and his personal battles. Mac was for the most part a figurative antagonist in the film. Oh, and the guy they used to play Connors? WTF? Really off.

They portrayed Mac as that villain who only has a small amount of screen time before the battle begins.

Just watched it. Yeah liked it. Not many good tennis films out there. As others have said the actor who played Borg was pretty much spot on. Even got Borg’s distinctive Backhand right.
Shia was ok IMO. He overacted and the “you cannot be serious” moment was not a patch on the real thing. He also swore far too much (STFU/F this/f that), which I don’t think McEnroe did as much during 1980 Wimbledon, as made out in this film. Maybe much later on his career.

The fact they removed the Tacchini and Fila logos from the outfits both players wore in the move ruined it for me before I even saw it. Making historic films there's just no justification to edit such famous, key details of the events. Those tracksuit tops were very popular at the time and it just looks wrong to have them removed.

Any good? Very recently I watched the King vs Riggs movie and it was rather forgettable.

Most films about tennis are in that category. Reminds me of 'Wimbledon' (2004) albeit the main characters were completely fictional (although not without a certain charm).
Isnt that a chick flick? Shouldnt even be counted IMO

The licensing cost would have been too much.

The movie didnt catch the essense of these two great personalities at all i think. Mac was basically reduced to a bad tempered jerk and Borg just looked depressed. The only one that felt genuin in catching the true essense of Borg was his son that had a small part. A good documentary with real actionclips and interviews would have been waaaayyyy better then this....
