Boris Becker out of prison

Boris is once again free to fly!

I had missed that he was released from prison in December 2022 after eight and a half months. This article makes it sound like it wasn't a particularly pleasant stay.
One of the inmates he was concerned with was "John," who was serving a sentence for multiple murders. John allegedly threatened him because he wanted money. Other inmates who were on good terms with Becker warned John against hurting him.

Fun times.. He claims that he has learned from the experience. I wonder if they'll let him back on the air as commentator at some point.

Where have you been that you completely missed the news?

He's not allowed to return to UK though. He's been employed by Eurosport for AO '23, if I remember correctly.

Edit: yes correct he was working as analyst in Eurosport during Australian Open 2023.

He has landed a new role already, as an analyst for Eurosport Germany’s coverage of the Australian Open when it gets underway in Melbourne on January 16. Becker is also set to feature on the British coverage of the competition as he "contributes views and analysis to an international audience at key moments”.

The famous and influential get out of prison fast and they get work quickly while ordinary people they stay locked up for a long time and when they come out they are stigmatized by the whole society, which makes their possibility of reintegration into the job market practically impossible.

Boris is indeed not an ordinary people and his home country values him so much and they want him to function in the community after all what he's done for Germany in the sporting world

Whoops.. I guess I haven't been paying attention. I did a search of this forum section for Boris Becker and didn't see any recent posts on it, but maybe I should have looked harder. Anyway, glad for him that he's out (but not excusing his crimes obviously).

Don't feel bad you're not the only one.
I was surprised to see him at Davis Cup today!
I thought he was still behind bars.
(I don't read all posts here). :)

Becker was jailed for not declaring all his assets to the British authorities after bankruptcy. Bankruptcy wipes out debts (as the law recognizes that the debts cannot be repaid), so the person who is declared bankrupt must declare all their assets.

The tax evasion case was in Germany from December 1996 to October 2002, and ended with a suspended prison sentence, after Becker was found guilty of deliberately making false statements regarding his place of residence on his income tax filings in order save 3.3 million Deutschmarks. This was when he was claiming residence in Monte Carlo while spending too many days in Germany from 1991-93. The prosecution in the tax evasion case originally charged Becker with evading 10.4 million Deutschmarks from 1991-96, but dropped charges for the latter years later on, focusing on what they saw as clearer evidence in the 1991-93 period.

I didn't realize the extent of it all in the late 1990s, but it's clear that it wrecked his late tennis career going by the timings. Becker was playing amazing tennis in late 1996, and looking set for a great few years, yet by 1997 Wimbledon Becker was saying that he had played his last match at Wimbledon after Sampras beat him in the quarter finals and that he was going into semi retirement. Such a quick fall in form, and it's because Becker's mind was elsewhere.

Becker's case was about hiding assets from creditors, and more specifically lying to a court about such.

He may have had tax issues, but they did not put him in jail.

Shortly before Christmas, Boris Becker was released from prison. He himself said his time in prison made him a different person. However, his ex-wife Lilly Becker sees it very differently.

"Prison didn't make Boris a better person"
In an interview with the "Bild" newspaper, she raises serious allegations against Boris. "No. Prison didn't make Boris a better person. Boris lives in his own world, where everything revolves around Boris Becker," says Lilly Becker.

Another accusation from Lilly to Boris Becker: "Boris doesn't care whether we're doing well or badly. At the same time, we were connected by an honest love.” Her conclusion: “Boris can be charming and loving if he wants to. But also extremely hurtful with words. A devil."
