Boris Becker's Racquet Specs

I have one of Becker's personal Pumas from 1988. Here are a few pics of the specs.

It's interesting, i thought Boris had custom handle without screw in it.

Looking to last picture I think that this is a fake "PCS System"...on real one the butt-cap is splitted into 2 symmetrical part (following the same kind of division on handle) and it does not seem the case to me.

May be, will check it later 'cause i have this model of racquet. I just think i saw somewhere that he had solid plastic buttcap without any real/fake screw on it.

Possibly you are right...I read the same thing here on some thread...maybe it came from a batch done differently.
Anyway the butt-cap shape seems more similar to Winner model to me, since if I recall well the screw was much more bulging on Super model (to make the screw easier to rotate).

You're right about two-piece plastic buttcap, i've just checked my BB Super (don't have Winner). It's the same on my second Puma racquet - Lady (looks very close to Puma Vilas, only in white, may be different weight).

We can also check old Boris match pictures trying to catch his buttcap. But it's not an easy task.

I recall well so :)

From my experience, butt-cap used on Super is the same also on these models: G. Vilas Power and Red / Black / Blue Puma.
Instead, butt-cap used on Winner is the on Becker Pro and, maybe, G. Vilas (I'm not so lucky to have the latter).

Are you Puma racquets fan?

Just an FYI, the white label in the throat was done by Jay Schweid (Jay's Custom Stringing - no longer in business) or one of his stringers most likely on August 27th, 1987. I know this bc I used to be one of his stringers back in the day and prepared many many labels like this :) Apparently this sticker remained on Boris' frame until the following spring when he was in Dallas! August 27th of 1987 would have put him in NYC the Thursday before the main draw started in NYC. Back then he always used uncoated VS natural gut and usually strung the crosses a little looser than the mains. Salmon VS grip first then a blue one.

Yes, I love Puma racquets...but not only them, unfortunately for my finances :)

I love old Estusa, Head, Fischer, Volkl, ecc racquets.
Sounds good. Do you like old racquets more like me? My favourite time in tennis is the 80's when i began to play myself (about 1982), though started to watch since 1977. So i like racquets from that period. I got about 200 sticks in my collection, too many for my small apartment, for my budget and for my wife's mind:). Regulary play with these old racquets, it's a fun, quality is much better than modern racquets. How many do you have and what is your playing racquet most of the time?

Absolutely, even though I began to play much more recently (early 2000).
Done very few exceptions, modern retail rackets have nothing to do with old ones, in my opinion.
Now I've reached a similar number as for rackets collected...I do not know exact number :)
Nowdays I'm playing with PT630 (or PT57A) mainly, instead up to 2 years ago with PC600 (or PT10).
In between I use to test all the rackets which I constantly add to my collection ;)

And you ?

Yes, i collected only racquets that i would like to play with. On other hand one part of my collection is about the models that were used by famous players of the 80's. I got racquets (models of course) of Borg, Vilas, Connors, McEnroe, Lendl, Wilander, Edberg, Curren, Becker, Cash, Jarryd, etc. I got Agassi's also but in midplus because i don't play with oversize.
These Head racquets that you play with are the best Head sticks were ever made. Very classic and very specific old Head feel. These two models are from the 90's, you know. Muster, Kuerten - PT630, Safin, Ivanishevich - PC600 and endless other great players (both models).

Great, vey interesting. What was the tension, do you remember?

I heard same words from many experts/collectors, that's why I opted for these models and I never come back to modern frames.
As you say, they have a special feel :)

Same for me. Longtime i was aware to try Head racquets, mostly because players used them were not my heroes. Leconte, Sanchez, Casall, Mayotte, etc.

I know it’s heresy but I love pumas also as you know. Tried a Babolat pure strike vs tour this week and love it. Just as much control as the Puma but every shot has x3 as much spin on it

My high school doubles partner from Sweden used the blue and red Becker Punma frame. He was a big strong athletic guy who clubbed his groundies Becker style and modeled his service motion after Edberg. I think he used the full throttle setting too.

I have BB 11Special Edition made by Boris personal specs with some lead already installed. The unstrung specs are: 338gr, 32,7cm.
...and a hefty swingweight. I recall the strung bosworth estusa's were 366, 3 pts HL and the tw listed bb11 SE specs were 377 sw, 4 pts HL.
i have a couple of the SE 11's myself and they are identical strung specs (367 sw, 4 pts HL, 357 grams, flex 60) to the dot. Like battleaxes but unbelievable stability and control. I was puzzled as to why his specs implied a close to even balance while the retail super was much more Head light (with a leather grip) but wadester's post now makes perfect sense.

is it the one with the 18x20 pattern? Babolat's are not my cup of tea but i have heard positive feedback about this frame (and the pure control tours).
Just a suggestion, try the DC melbourne if you can. The spin, plowthrough, stability and control may surprise you (in a good way.)

So Boris played himself with almost even balance to get more power.

+1 on this, experienced and felt it at the court, 2006 - 7., on one occasion. Used Head Prestige Classic for a long time before, and prior to that POG 93.
The culprit in my case was not the Babolat Pure Strike, but the APD +.

Used many players frames to begin with - many years ago: Adidas GTX pro (Lendl), Dunlop Max 200G, Puma Boris Becker Winner (never evaluated it fully though), Rossignol F200 (Wilander), latter iterations of the Rossignol, Yonex R-22, R-7 (the latter briefly), Fischer Elliptic (purple one), Head Edge (black one, less than 90 sq. in), still own one slightly cracked PS 85 St. Vincent, playtested even (back then) white Slazenger Panther, used and endorsed at the time (mid-late 80's by Jimmy Connors), and some other frames from that era that I have lost count of, even one clone of the Prince Magnesium Pro 90 (Pat Cash).

That single occasion was one day when one guy I practiced with got to demo the Babolat APD + the original, non-cortex version, that year. I was very sceptic when he gave it to me at the net, and wanted me to hit with it. The reputation that Babolat sticks got at the time, from some people, was (if reading forums) - all power and dubious feel and control.

The performance of the stick surpassed anything I have tried before, and to some extent was reminiscent of the dark blue, (matte paint finish) Pro Kennex stick that we playtested during the'80s and thought it was a darn good stick (striking similarities physically between the two of those, as well).

No loss of precision whatsoever, increase in pace at the same time, more spin, slice was unbelievable, easier handling in fast paced, tight situations, easier adjustment during the back- and forward swing, no loss in comfort, but gain instead... simply better on all accounts. Easier to serve with, and again, could pinpoint the placement without any problem. One of the very notable things is the ease of the handling which also lends itself for the easier to control (and greater) acceleration of the racquet head into the ball.

As much as I love my Estusa Power Beam, for its looks and sentimental value, and obvious qualities as well, if I look for the performance play on the court, the APD allows simply for better, more aggressive and less error-prone tennis, with less limitations in handling and performance.

Now I have a few of the Becker frames made by head. They are 345g strung, lighter and more manoeuvrable than the pumas and more solid than the estusas. The best version in my opinion and I do not usually like head frames....string them with modern poly (currently weisscannon silverstring) and you have a proper racket.

Did Becker change his racquet specs? He seemed to be more willing to rally from baseline in latter years from what I remember
