"I read Coric made a statement that he was the best player of his generation and he plays like Djokovic. I sort of giggled to myself a little bit," Kyrgios said.

Emerging Croatian teen Borna Coric, 18, and ranked 95 in the world, has also compared his game this week to world No.1 Djokovic and Murray, pronouncing himself the "best of my generation".

"I think my game is quite similar to Djokovic's. I move well, I don't miss many balls, I'm a fighter and my backhand is my best shot. Currently, I'm the best of my generation. Making the Top 50 within the next few months seems a realistic goal for me now," he said.

Could this be the start of Borna Coric's undoing?

Was it the great Bernard Tomic who claimed as an early teenager to have the mind of Sampras, the ground strokes of Federer and the heart of Lleyton Hewitt?"

Idiot comment which will put a massive red bullseye on his back going forward for all the top guys and his contemporaries to try that extra bit harder to beat this fool.

Tomic used to have that arrogance and was made to pay. History might repeat itself with Coric.

It was an interview where he was asked what aspects of players games he would have if he could have any.

He wound up with the mind of Fognini, the ground strokes of Karlovic and the heart of....I don't know that he has one. At least based on today's effort.

Honestly, those brash comments remind me of what Djokovic said in 2006 about Nadal at Roland Garros. He is far away from being a Djokovic or a Murray right now, and as Kyrgios said, he needs to work on his physical and mental side for a couple of years (or more) before thinking he has a legitimate shot at those guys (or being as successful as them).

Update from the Article from Coric

"Dear fans,
I would like to take this opportunity to clarify a statement in an interview I gave for The Times of India while playing in Chennai.
Some of my quotes were misinterpreted.
First, regarding "the best in my generation", in and around my age group we are so lucky to have a cluster of super talented contemporaries who have most definitely pushed each and everyone of us to become better over the years. We all have a healthy rivalry. As it happens at this specific moment I have the best ranking of all the players my age but as we know in tennis that could change in 1 week as it did on many occasions between us last year. I respect all of them. Nothing is for certain in this sport and I respect each and everyone of them.
Secondly, my comparison with some of the best players in the world was taken out of context. All I wanted to say is that I am naturally a defensive player. In order to be better, I need to work on being aggressive as much as possible. In this statement they were supposed to use as examples, but I was not quoted the way I wanted. I utterly respect players who are amongst the best of our era and multiple Grand Slam champions and I in no way meant to be disrespectful in anyway."

Sounds like an intelligent guy. Shame on those trying to blow it out of proportion.

Coric is now a public figure. He'll probably start engaging his brain before speaking. I'd be surprised if he was misquoted. More likely he or his minder was unhappy with the image the accurate quotes conveyed.

I actually don't think Coric said anything wrong except that he's the best of his generation. Kyrgios has had the breakthrough at a slam, and has a better ranking. So obviously that's why Nick took issue with the comments. Maybe Borna wasn't mentioning him because of the 1.5 year age gap

Coric comparing his game style to Djokovic or Murray isn't the same as claiming to be as good as them. He said his short term goal is top 50. that hardly seems out of the question with the way he's been playing.

Haha, a 'breakthrough' at a Slam is called winning it.

None of the new generation guys are ever going to do that.

He is just saying he plays a simila style to them, not that hes a good as them. I see nothing wrong with his comments besides him saying he is the best of his generation. Because he is not, kyrgios is

Agree. It's a freaking 18 year old kid, and just because he said that his type of play resembles Djokovic/Murray's, this is now his "undoing". Come on, pleeaase....

Agree, and Nick is 1.5 yrs older. So maybe Borna only meant players his exact age...

Yeah but they would still be from the same generation..... but I don't know if that's what he meant

They are, and they played in juniors. Idk, but I doubt Borna would claim he's better than Nick atm?

Seems like much ado about nothing. Expect big things from both of them this year

That's just one comment he's made. I would be concerned if he was partying, getting heavily drunk and smoking marijuana, but he was just making a statement on his style and comparing himself to his contemporaries. I actually like to see that confidence and highly motivated attitude from the boy. It seems he is eager to try hard and get to the top in a hurry. That will take him to the top soon. I remember the cocky young 17 year-old Hewitt after he beat Agassi in Adelaide. He said something like "I've never seen anyone who hits that clean", as if he has seen them all. That Hewitt got to no. 1 in a couple of year's time. Hope something similar will happen to this cocky boy, Coric.

It's essential for Coric to have this kind of confidence, or if you prefer, arrogance, but he shouldn't be mouthing off in public about it.

people are upset when players speak their mind but also complain when they have no personality. cant win.

Its obvious he said what he said and his management company wrote the apology. he needs to just own it

Confidence is one thing but coming out with a comment/statement that make you sound like an ar53whole is something else.

Anyway too late now, he just needs to knuckle down and let his tennis do the talking. Next thing Coric will probably make some other rash statement that he is on his way to 19 grand slams and surpassing all the great tennis records.

Didn't young Novak once said after losing to Nadal at RG that he had the match 'under control' only for Rafa to laugh it off? We know what happened after that..

Everyone has to remember that borna doesnt speak english as well as native speakers, listen to his intervies. what he said makes sense in terms of being the best junior player in the world as kyrgios isnt a junior anymore

borna and tomic have very different personalities. borna fights harder then tomic and shows true love for the sport in which case tomic seems a little burned out. Borna will be more succesful becasue he works harder than most and has a mental poise years ahead of his age as we saw in basel.

in basel he reached a semifinal beating some top notch players, and even though he beat a sick nadal, nadal still wouldve beaten him had he had any lapse of mental

What happened to the comment he may or may not have made saying that, at his best, he "plays like Djokovic" and, at his worst, "plays like Murray"?

Shots fired.

chardy is a very good Player and ranked inside the top30.

Coric is a big Talent but he is just 18 years old. losing in 4 against a top Player is not bad at all.

nobody is expecting Coric to become a top10 Player in 2015. if he can stabilize himself in the top80 this season it would be a great success and a good base to improve further.

djokovic started his Age 18 season at around 150 and finished it around 75. Coric is on a good way, what is more important is what happens between 19 and 21.

It took 3, nearly 4 years for Hewitt to supplant Kuerten as the #1 player in the world.

By 2000 though, he was already ranked 6 or 7 in the world, and beating players like Rafter, Kafelnikov and even Sampras.

Coric, I think, it's too early to say about. I wanted Coric to lose today mainly because of his recent comments (which may or may not be extrapolated on, but nonetheless, he needed a lesson from Chardy today in order to improve for the future).

The fact that he pushed Chardy shows that he's got the goods to go far, especially considering his tender age..

I will enjoy watching Coric get tennis lessons dished out to him by all the big players in the next few years to serve as a harsh reminder making statements like that just puts a big massive target on your back.

"Playing tennis to break into the Top 20 has never been a goal. It is meaningless to play a sport, if it's not for becoming the No. 1 world player,"

I think right here is the right mentality. Do you want to be a Fedalovic type of player, or a Gasquet/Fognini type of player?

Andy Murray H2H Sergiy Stakhovsky = 4 - 0
Borna Coric H2H Sergiy Stakhovsky= 0 - 1

This isn't exactly a fair comparison now, is it? Stakhovsky is in his physical prime and has years of experience on Coric, while he and Murray are roughly the same age.
