Borna Coric's undoing ?

Update from the Article from Coric

"Dear fans,
I would like to take this opportunity to clarify a statement in an interview I gave for The Times of India while playing in Chennai.
Some of my quotes were misinterpreted.
First, regarding "the best in my generation", in and around my age group we are so lucky to have a cluster of super talented contemporaries who have most definitely pushed each and everyone of us to become better over the years. We all have a healthy rivalry. As it happens at this specific moment I have the best ranking of all the players my age but as we know in tennis that could change in 1 week as it did on many occasions between us last year. I respect all of them. Nothing is for certain in this sport and I respect each and everyone of them.
Secondly, my comparison with some of the best players in the world was taken out of context. All I wanted to say is that I am naturally a defensive player. In order to be better, I need to work on being aggressive as much as possible. In this statement they were supposed to use as examples, but I was not quoted the way I wanted. I utterly respect players who are amongst the best of our era and multiple Grand Slam champions and I in no way meant to be disrespectful in anyway."
Thanks for the clarification... as I was reading his quote about "best in his genaration", the first couple of things I thought, was:
1. english is probably not his native language
2. by "generation" he probably meant age
I've been laughed at (good naturedly) many times trying to learn/speak spanish amongst native Spanish speaking folks when I misuse words/phrases... of course, my friends/fam understood what I was trying to say given the context it was said in... and the media always gives the correct context, right?!!

We should give this kid a break for saying something in a foreign language. As already pointed out he obviously meant something different and was misinterpreted.

He did win the ATP Star of Tomorrow Award at the WTF and deservedly so with that great run at Basel, only a set away from the finals and a top 100 ranking. '15 hasn't gotten off to a great beginning (now 1-4 but two losses to Chardy and Wawa) but it's way too early to ignore his potential.

Still, it's a much better start than his real contemporary Zverev, who has failed to qualify at his first three events with losses to Zopp, JP Smith and Herbert. If you ask me, Coric should be most concerned about youthful Omar Jasika supplanting him...that guy has enormous upside and could have qualified at AO with a win vs Copil after a 12-10 2nd round tussle with the aforementioned JP Smith.

Coric is only 18 and he's already in the Top 100. This is pretty good considering Fed, Djoker, and Murray were ranked outside the Top 100 at 18.

Top 50 is a realistic goal for him this year, and Top 10 by 2016. That would be pretty impressive if you ask me.

He's fairly short, left-handed, is an Aussie, and even looks a bit like Rod Laver.

Watch out!

One step after another. Not every talent is going to end up in the Top10.

Show off.

I'm hoping he gains an inch or two but that serve is already a thing of beauty!

Johan Kriek did well during his peak, he outserved and outsmarted many with a body type suitable for just chopping wood.

I hope Coric does well, he is likeable and a hard worker so far. Tennis needs harder working youngsters rather than players who want everything on a plate for little effort. There are too many distractions these days and few juniors chose the humble approach. Lets hope he doesnt tatoo a sponsor logo next.

We need these post-'90 phenoms to develop some healthy rivalries amongst themselves. They could easily gap the weak late-80's group that haven't stepped up in the tail-end of the slams. With another couple of inches, Jasika might be the best of them.

The cockiness of Marcelo Rios was far beyond this. IN the book "Marcelo Rios: The Man We Barely Knew" there is an anecdote about Rios doing an adidas press event at Roland Garros with Graf and Edberg and the media asked Rios what aspect of the games of Graf and Edberg would he like to incorporate into this own game. Rios, dead serious, said he wouldn't take anything from their games. LOL. He was that arrogant.

Pretty bold for someone who hadn't proved anything at the time. And in the end, he won nothing of significance. He'll probably be remembered as one of the worst #1 ranked players of all time.
