If Genie was as much the tennis player as she was an athlete she’d be #1 in the world. Today, during a match she asked about her forehand technique during a changeover.

Look, Genie is a sensational athlete. She’d be at a pro level in any event she chose. I’d imagine she’d be the fastest and best pro softball, basketball, volleyball, ladies soccer player.

She just isn’t a tennis player. If she took a whole year off to just learn basic stroke production so that when she’s in a point she’s more worried about constructing a point instead of hoping she can smack the ball back over one more time.

She has footwork and speed. And it’s gotten her to the highest level of majors but that was clearly a fluke. she has almost no technical solidity.
And we all know in life some people are talented, some people are textbook, and some people have more luck and a way of willing things to happen than actual ability.

She can’t hit the same shot twice. I’d imagine she doesn’t like to do drills with her deficiencies in technique.
But. She’s very good looking so people don’t so much care.

I was watching an old match with Raonic, I think 2015 or 16, and the commentators were talking about Bouchard deciding to play Hopman Cup. Went like this:

Honestly a shame, if Genie kept building on her success when she reached the Wimbledon final she could've been huge for the WTA tour. Canada as a market getting a legitimate champion would be huge (although hopefully for them FAA or Shapovalov pans out). Of course Canada aside her looks obviously make her extremely marketable if she could start winning.

She had a 1/2 good season and since she is blonde and some consider good looking she got a quick fanbase. Fortunately, she was smart enough to capitalize it and make a living on being a very so/so tennis player. I think she gets way too much coverage in the tennis events based on her performances. I'd be fine with her getting tennis coverage if her tennis improved dramatically.

Commentators and events keep bringing her up when she is in the draw when she hasn't really had anything to show for years. It's unfair that other journeywomen don't get half the coverage she gets.

She too came from a wealthy family (although maybe not as insanely wealthy as that of Ernests) and, like him, money has never been an issue for her which means that tennis is probably just a glorified hobby for both of them. They both had their peaks (Genie's was in 2014) but nothing of any consistency since then. At some point in the not-too-distant future each of them will probably get bored with crashing out of small events in the 1st or 2nd round and call it quits.

Also, her game is quite one-dimensional and once players figured her out, plus her brittle confidence and it's easy to see, in hindsight, that she's a flash in the pan. Ostapenkoflop likewise.

Her downward spiral started when she got exposed by Kvitova in that Wimbledon final, and the number one thing that Kvitova exposed was that Bouchard is slow as molasses. You are right about her strokes though. She can play exceptionally well when she's able to stay right on top of or a little inside the baseline where she can cutoff angles so her lack of wide speed isn't exposed and can use her exceptional reflexes to basically half-volley most balls. But that's all she can do. Once opponents learned to move her up and wide to then move her back and wide, her strengths were negated and she's failed to develop anything more.

She appears to have top notch reflexes/hand-eye-coordination, but she doesn't move as well as the average WTA player IMO.

Exactly. Where would the idea come from that she's such an amazing athlete. She's not. For her height, her movement is lacking and that's why her already risky on the rise from the baseline strategy blew up on her face and continues to.

The difference is Kournikova did win doubles slams. She and Hingis beat a pretty good team at the 99 AO - Davenport and Zvereva - and again in 02, beat Hantuchova and ASV. Won the YEC doubles twice too. Kournikova was a handy volleyer and had injuries not made her serve pretty much non existent, would have hung around for some more time. While ordinarily nobody counts doubles achievements at TT, in this case, a solitary MM title for Bouchard vis a vis a Lipton final plus doubles slams and (numerous) titles is a no contest. Kournikova was a way better player than Bouchard. Even in 97, her Wimbledon semi loss was to the eventual title winner Hingis. And she was barely 17 then. By the time Bouchard was getting hung out to dry by random WTA opponents, Kournikova's career was over. I would say she was a lot more like Vaidisova than Bouchard.
