Bought a new stick

Been playing ok with the old one so it must be time for a new stick

Finally some one made a 100" or less stick that was stiff and light. So I bought the Blade team.

Looking forward to the 72 ra and 99" head. Its light enough that I can add my 50-60g and it should still be playable....

Yes I will string it ultra tight with kevlar.

Just curious, does this mean that when you're playing poorly with the old one, you just stay with it?
Its more a comment on how I can't seem to just play. I am always changing things from gear to technique. never show up with the same game. Like last time I was hitting a different serve and forehand...

yeah, the one I mentioned is the Wilson.steam.99S
the other I remember is the one you mentioned Wilson.steam.96

I ran a quick google search and found several for sale

On TW? If not, HOW DARE YOU!

Also, a spin racquet is probably not the best for me. At least it wasnt in the past. Pretty sure I demoed the 99s once.

Thought I read someone mentioned in this forum that the Blade 99 Team is the Steam 99's current incarnation.

I think that is wrong. The stiffness of the steam 99 is 70 and the blade is 72. The strung weight is also 30g higher on the steam 99

Cool. The Blade Team 99 is a different animal, but is powerful and stable. It’s already at a modifiable weight, but isn’t a lightweight. Should be fun

@TennisHound is right. Strung it up with Ashaway kev 17g and max power rough (20g or 19g IIRC) at 86/66lbs. Brilliant!

Added my handle and some lead at 10 and 2. Matched the ratio of my old stick. Thought it weighs more it feels faster somehow.

Played ok with it but had noticeably more spin. A lot more!! Not sure why. Its not the string pattern I don't think. Its more dense in the middle than the old stick. Probably not the strings as much since I have used them before.

So that leaves 2 things I can think of.

1. The differential is working better because its a smaller frame. @travlerajm am I remembering correctly that the smaller frames work better with differentials?

2. It is faster. I matched the ratios and usually that produces the same response between different racquets. So the old one was 155g measured at the head and 185g measured at the grip. New one was 191g at the grip after I put my handle on, and the tip was 154g. So I added 5.5g to get to 160.2g, maintaining the same ratio of .837 between the tip weight and the grip weight. Would the fact that the Blade is 27" vs 27.25" make it feel faster. Asked another way, matching ratios like that would the length make a difference and if so would it make the shorter stick pull through contact faster? And in the past I purposely adjust MgRi to make it whippier but never got the spin. Would it be worthwhile to elongate this stick?

This thing served awesome. I was getting more speed and spin. Kickers were bouncing higher and flats seemed faster. One serve surprised my partner who has seen my serve for 30 years. In other regards it was like any other racquet change for me. Bh was always great but fh seemed confused and several mishits. Still won the set though....Great honey moon going on. Probably a keeper just for what it did to the serve.

The one con was the flex. @PeterFig. What is going on with wilsons flex. Just like the RF97a this Blade Team was firm on most shots but turned to mush on a few. It seems super stiff on center shots but shots at the top of the hoop like that huge overhead and that screaming bh return caused it to get soft. It was noticeable and very disconcerting. It was like the RF97a. My other wilson sticks never behaved like that. 6.1 95, Blx 2, Profile, Burn 100s, etc. They were stiff no matter where they were struck. So Peter is this some new tech? And is there a stick that doesn't do that in wilsons line up?? Any mod that can fix that?? FWIW, always hitting the sweet spot is not something Shroud can do all the time...

Elbow was fine btw.

Thanks dude. Though I am proving your signature!! Been over a year since I bought a new stick!
Ha yup. I’m selling my “collection”. age has taken its toll on my feet. Not able to play much anymore. Hope your new weapon works out.

Hey for us youngsters is there anything we can do to prevent the old age toll on the feet??

Stay young as long as you can. Key to that is “shrouded” in secrecy. Age catches up to us all eventually. Play as long as you can. Seriously good shoes and proper foot support, playing on softer courts, weight loss, and genetics play a big role I think. Take care.

If you are so fearful of TE that you add 100 grams of lead to your rackets
and then string it at 90 lbs, why would you buy a RA72 powerful stiff racket in the first place?
Makes no sense!

Actually it does. When you add that much weight at both ends the racquet doesnt feel stiff as the numbers indicate. I prefer a board. I wish this racquet was even stiffer.

Also there are big advantages to higher swing weights than just protecting the arm.

And in the other thread i mentioned that because of my setup there is no way i am getting te again

Yo @travlerajm any thoughts on the question i asked??

Yes, a smaller head size, or a narrower head size, will amplify the amount of residual tension differential after you pop the frame off the stringer.

So even with a tight tension, there will be more freedom for mainstring movement.

The high stringbed stiffness, coupled with mains that are still free to move, will give huge spin. The extra spin potential from overspin due to mainstring movement only happens because the ball flattens on the stringbed, and a stiff stringbed helps to maximize this.

Found a used one and bought it. Will be switching to this stick now. Added 1 g at 12 and I think thats the ticket. It was a bit too whippy before.

Mind boggling. Why do this to yourself? With a new stick, how about trying something more conventional and arm friendly - like adding a few grams here and there (15 or less), and stringing with a poly somewhere between 50 and 65lbs. And heaven forbid going with the regulation handle and an overgrip or two. Trying to replicate your old setup seems, well, probably about as pointless as this post because I know you won't budge!

Yeah Yeah. I tried that on a buddies Prince Noodle demo and it SUCKED. Small handle mushy strings ugh man it was like hitting with pillows.

Arm is fine man.

I find I am hitting a decent amount of shots at the top of the frame (not on the frame) just the upper part. Old stick was 27.25" so on my 2nd blade I plan to extend it and see if that helps.

Measure out what 1/4" looks like in real life.
Then tell us if you think that is the issue.
It is literally not even one half the width of one cross of the strings.

You do understand that a longer stick gives more leverage and a higher swing weight right. So I will probably hit the same place but it will have more leverage and feel more like the old stick since it adds extra swingweight. New stick while stiffer has a weird flex when hit toward the top and I am hoping that the extra length might affect that a bit. Also a bit longer means I also don't have to adjust as much and can match it better to the old stick.

Finally that extra length helps on the serve too.

@Shroud How did you get started with the monster handle size and unusual shape? Tennis elbow? Hope you are well,BHBH

Don't care anymore, used to work in lead and zinc mine. Shroud was our biggest customer, now gone socialist work for big Gov. You destroyed the commodity prices with your lead fluctuation.

I have no clue about the recoil stuff ... but I know what it feels like. Nothing hurt worse with my TE then hitting near the tip (I hit toward the tip a lot). The racquet would flex ... and that recoil back hurt like a biach!!!

Yeah I got ge from using the PS85 with gut/poly at 60/40 IIRC because of my bad form on the bh and all the framed winners I could hit with that stick.

You got it man. Got TE (don't take a week off and play tennis everyday and spray paint everyday as well) pretty bad years ago. Came here and there were two tidbits of advice I read. 1. add weight, 2. don't squeeze tight. Big handle accomplishes both (ok the weight sure but not where it should be but I was clueless back then). When you add a replacement grip over the stock handle the bevels get rounded like crazy. So to get some kind of bevels you have at add something. I realized I only needed a squarish handle given the grips I used. So it just evolved organically. The big handle allows me not to do a death grip and still hold on. Now I can't play with normal grips.

Its not just me. One guy I sent a bunch of old sticks and told him he could change the grip. He never did because he liked how it felt. I have to not die because he will be lost without my arcane handle creation knowledge.

Also one TT guy hit with my 6.1 95 where I had a slightly smaller version and he commented how he didnt think he would like the shape but with his eastern fh he was digging it.

And well Mats Wilander had a whole vid on customizing the shape and that was an inspiration.

Anyhow I know its crazy but after having played with that jacked up handle, I can't go back. I am convinced that that handle is one thing that lets me use such high tensions and not explode.

Another thing I tried was low tension to help the arm. I recall saying kev/zx at 40/20 was too harsh. LMAO. Anhow here is post that kind of shows the genesis. The low tension lead to vibrations and well a special handle was call in:
