Brain Tumor and Tennis

I won't dare to say this in the section below:

But since you have a sense of tumor, can we ask here whether this will affect his footwork? Or is that in really bad taste?
That's pretty terrible but expected from you. Ever think there may be people on this forum on the same path to amputation and are scared to death of this likely outcome? Doubt it.

I know that you don't have shroud's sense of tumor. I am just trying to put people in a joyous mood through jokes.

It has nothing to do with a sense of humor, it's just plain insensitive and tasteless. I used to have a modicum of respect for you, but no longer. Not that it matters anyway.

Just saw this thread. And I thought I had a bad year health wise! So sorry to hear Shroud, but great you are getting back into it and remembering more now. Hope you continue to get better!

One thing I noticed with this post tumor world is that I often do things and then manage to remember them. UGH. Will check out the thread I checked out....

Sureshs might be a great way to sleep forever.
Yikes, and I use the wrong words...I manage to FORGET them.

Thanks man. It certainly was not forseen...surprised I even had health insurance...

OMG its official. I am nuts. Just matched the swingweights on my sticks and now both are 426sw according to my biffridi SW1 machine. Said another way, I won a set with a 426sw racquet...

The right way to evaluate Shroud's sticks is to use Racket Weight to body weight ratio. Then they turn out to very light.

At the net that racquet is literally a wall. You won't have to swing at all.

Which shot do you feel improves the most from the added swing weight? And which one if any gets worse?

I'm pretty sure my wrist injury was due to using a racquet with 340sw, previous to that I was using 315. I do like to use full swings though and have a loose wrist on the fh, it felt like after contact the racquet would fly towards my opponent and pull my hand away from my wrist with that much sw. I really liked the feel of that extra sw though. Although it maybe made getting the racquet to the right spot in the ready position a little slower.

When I was using a lower sw racquet my balls were more bullets and my normal hitting partner commented on that...of course I was trying focus on footwork and moving through the ball. But the balls started going long and my shoulder was hurting. I switched back to the heavier and higher sw racquet and the balls started going in and less pain for the shoulder. My serve seems to be better. I never could serve well with a light racquet, even high swingweight racquets from extended length I couldn't serve with. Did a whole thread on SW from weight vs. length and now I have SW from both!

My backhand I could hit with a clipboard it seems.

I can see you having issues with a higher sw if you have a wristy shot. That said, IMHO a big big mistake people make when adding lead is putting it at 3&9 which everyone seems to do. 10&2 ups the sw more but not the twist weight as much. Twist weight makes the racquet sluggish IMHO more than sw.

Sounds like the Mgr/I was off on that 340sw stick if it was pulling that much.

Also I can see the effects of the tumor surgery when measuring the swing weight with SW1 machine. Its been a 3 day ordeal and I finally got it all going right. Normally I am solid at that kind of stuff. And now the sw is higher at 459sw.

interesting, i feel like higher sw helps my bh more
not sure where the weight was exactly, it wasn't lead tape but rather a racquet switch (switched to yonex vcore pro 97H)

Yonex seems to be the IT stick for real players. Probably why I never bought one :).

Its pretty common that weight helps the bh.

got crushed today 2-6, 3-6. UGH. But my buddy said since I couldn't even walk 3 months ago its pretty amazing to be playing 2 sets. I have lost so much stamina, physical and mental, this was the most tired I can remember being on a tennis court. Though I found my forehand and won the game of 21 we played after the 2nd set. Ugh this healing is slow going.

Your being hard on yourself...
I mean i could crush you before your ordeal :)

Also when you went to that higher SW rack your FH been less lethal. Your looping the ball more and its
allowing me to run around the bh and nail FH's. Where as before your shots had to much weight on them for
me to do much with it other then stab at it and it was giving you easier put away shots.

Another thing that is happening is your late of the ball. I was noticing your swing being late a lot more the last 2 days.
Some of that was you where tired and just not getting around on the ball. Also your glasses fogging up didnt help.

I knew paying that shaman for the full package was worth it !!! Wants another sheep or two !!

Long as your looping the ball i can run you side to side more and that is wearing you down.

Our normal hit total in a point is 3 to 4 at most before one of us mostly you hit a winner.

Last 2 days we been in the 5 to 8 range. before i finally run you down or hit the winner. The longer the point the more it plays into my strength.

35 years ago our hit total was more like 1 to 3 per point before one of us hit a winner or unforced error :)
See our game has grown !!

If we are able to play regular like. I believe your endurance will get much better. In fact i see us back up to 3 sets when we play by the first of the year.

Another thing to consider is we been playing with the same set of trinity Wilson balls (50) this entire time. I thinking that even though they are closer in
weight then most pressure less balls that it might be having an effect on your game more then mine. We can use a regular can some time and see if you
notice any difference. I been really impressed with that set of balls since i had them in the hopper now for over 2 years.

Yikes. I actually overheated and quit. It was in the 70-80 range. First I took off my hoodie then played a bit and quit. It was too hot. Not sure if that shows I am healing or not...

I was getting crushed anyhow. Probably just need a restring. Playing tomorrow and hoping for some better results. It was really hard to focus.

Added 10g at the 7" spot up the handle. Made a big difference on the forehand. After I added another 5g and should be good at this point. Yea. Legs felt disconnected today

It wasn't the best tennis day. Sleep is getting better but not yet normal. Forehand and serve toss are all over the map and my legs are "disconnected" but here is some match play (at least the 3-4 games that were competitive):

This made me feel good … pretty much flipping off that tumor. Backhand ros @7:05 sick … Thor’s hammer.

Hey man hope you are well and I am doing my part to forget you play pickleball and yep f/u tumor! Now if I could remember how to toss and hit a forehand that would help.

Yeah … tumor is no match for buddy turning to pickleball dark arts … not something you can forget. Your good guy status is confirmed just talking to me.

Glad to hear you are okay. When I first started playing USTA I played on the team with a guy about my age (we were both young then...in our 20's). His dad was from Greece which allowed him to compete in the olympics for Greece in the luge, and was able to train in the twin cities. Really nice friendly guy with a nice tennis game. Then I fell our of touch with him for about 10 years and joined a company where he also worked. He had developed a brain tumor. Unfortunately he never was able to recover and it took his life. I believe he probably lived until his mid-30's.

Wow. I am sorry to hear that. He sounded like a great guy and went way too early.
Thanks for helping me count my blessings and for the kind words.

Not sure. It was not cancerous so never had to do chemo. I got lucky! Do benign tumors need chemo wafers?
No definitely Not. benign tumors have great prognosis long term. but malignant tumors, patients usually only live about 6 months even with chemo wafer put inside the brain. You are lucky indeed

good luck with your recovery. I have ended my competition career which I miss more than anything due to stupid accident. It's very much about brain how you recover from injuries. Muster had a career ending injury when he was hit by a car but next day he was already hitting tennis balls with specially designed chair made for him and he was back in competitions allready six months later. I believe a right mindset is a key to recovery

Get your brain around the contradictions in your post please and be like Muster! Get back out there!!

BTW a head MRI is a different experience when you are not medicated and brain damaged. That 70's music was horrible...as an audiophile it was dreadful. And the lyrics...why not name the horse and who forgets their name but can remember it in the desert? The rainy desert no less.

No pickle ball for me yet!! Suck it tumor!!

I take a backpack to the pickleball courts. Inside … four paddles … different lengths, widths, swingweights, lead tape, overgrips, edge tape, sweat band, head band, Oakley prescription glasses, towel, water bottle, carbon paddle surface eraser/microfiber cloth.

80lbs string tension is equipment nerd amateur hour compared to the changing paddle scene … you will enjoy it when you get there 10 years from now.

But yes … pickleball suck it for as long as you can.
