Brawling at the Australian Open

Well if they have their hearts somewhere else, then maybe they should go back and live there?. I doubt though that the quality of life might not be up to what they have come to expect from living in Australia?

Kinda why I have had enough of Japan. I have been here for over 5 years and am not enjoying it anymore.. So instead of becomming miserable and draping an Australian flag around me, running around Japan taking my anger out on ethnic New Zealander's, I have decided to pack up and head home.. Its not that I hate it here, but as YOU say, my heart is somewhere else..
Oh NOES! Not our South Pacific mates!:D

That comment was tongue in cheek.. :D

But it just defines just how stupid this Serb Croat thing is.. Just stupid...

And I will say it again.. Aussies shouldnt be brawling with each other. No matter where any of their parents come from....

I think the Serbians should just stick to Soccer they wreck the name of Tennis.I was at the Medibank watching Kim Clijsters play Jelena Janckovich and when Kim won the match all the Serbians were booing here.I think thats just low. They didnt even let her say her speech in peace.Very bad sportsmanship from them.

Well with my parents, then how come I dont go to sporting events walking around with a Viking horn hat and the Norwegian flag draped around me starting fights with the British?

Because I am not Norwegian, I am Australian...

Got nothing to do with the "changing" world...

Wear that hat with pride and tell the world you are just ready to fight the power that be...............BOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIY! Tell em u part f the new flava unit

Since when has tennis turned into futbol? hahaha. You got to love the passion of the fans even though it was simply stupid.

If they are indeed Australians, show their passion for the Aussie players on the courts, and dont get caught up in a silly tired old ethnic clash...

Even though the brawl was stupid and I would never encourage such a behaviour personally I actually like the passion shown by fans like this minus the brawling of course.

Sometimes I think tennis is too clean-cut and this is why the sport is only successful with a certain type of demographic.

Why do we need, or indeed, what right do we have, to claim some kind of pride because of a piece of land and those who have lived on that piece of land before us!

In these days of internet / cheap fast flights / phone calls / etc etc - is nationalism even relevant anymore? I think not, but then again I'm willing to be real enough that I know this would fall on very deaf serbian / croatian / greek / 'aussie' ears....

Australia (like most countries) is absolutely driven by nationalism, as can be seen/heard in countless television shows, commercials, articles, books, speeches and any of the miriad ways people communicate with one another. To suggest it isn't relevant is beyond ridiculous: especially as you illustrate, in your last sentence, how important it still is to you.

As to your first question, "Why do we need, or indeed, what right do we have, to claim some kind of pride because of a piece of land and those who have lived on that piece of land before us", I'm guessing you take issue with Native Title.

Sorry OrangeOne.. Your long winded posts are a little difficult to get through.. Is there an actual point you were trying to make?

I never said I had a problem with having pride in your heritage. I do however have a problem with kids carrying on 2000 year old grudges, because of some stories their granddaddies told them. And then going to an event like the tennis, and acting like absolute turds..

Yes we are a multicultural country, and thats what makes us unique.. Our country also has a name, and its not Multicultural Australia. Its Australia.. SO that would make us all Australians, thus putting us on the same team!:-D

We all have history's.. Its just acting with a bit of class and dignity is all I ask.. Particularly when the rest of the world is watching!

I personally don't think nationalism is relevant as a grander concept, it is still indeed relevant and necessary for this debate, as it is indeed at the core of this debate. This could be just a wording and interpretation issue, as I was meaning that is my personal view in that post. I should have simply said "I'm beginning to think that nationalism should be a thing of the past", both tying the opinion tighter to myself and also not using the word relevant. I know, in the global scheme, right now it's still relevant.

Well that was my last sentence...and I was going to say how does this show my opinion, but I see where you were going. It's a future opinion i'm holding, maybe that in 50 or 100 years (or maybe in 10000 years), that i'd like to see nationalism be dropped as a concept. In the meantime, it's very real and has to be dealt with.

That's a very different kettle of fish.

Sorry for what? Your first response in this thread was 10 paragraphs. My reply was 2. Pot. Kettle. Dark Colour.

Is there an actual point you were trying to make?
Why thanks for the politeness :|. Any discussion as complex is unlikely to be able to be distilled to a single 'McDiscussion' sound-bite. There has been a lot of interesting discussion. Many others have successfully read and replied to my posts. Sorry you're having difficulty, but fear not, for when you return to Australia you will find that the Daily Telegraph is still in print.

No-one here disagrees with the above - why do you keep saying it as if they do?

Yes we are a multicultural country, and thats what makes us unique.. Our country also has a name, and its not Multicultural Australia. Its Australia.. SO that would make us all Australians, thus putting us on the same team!:-D
And yet you prefixed your parents as nation-Australians! Odd. Calling everyone Australian or not doesn't solve the problem, won't solve the problem. Getting 'leaders' in these communities that really do want peace, maybe that would help. And maybe there are many other ideas too, and maybe the more the issue is discussed in public and in detail, well the more communication that happens. Communication can solve many things (but then again, it's also useful to start wars. This be a complex world).

And taking up a whole page to make yer fricken point wont solve the problem either.. I think you like to hear yourself talk?;)... Or type...

Be careful - as the old saying goes, that's a Slippery Slope. And another: "you can't get a little bit pregnant." I'd rather see tennis stay the same 'size' (popularity) than have the lowlife infiltrate. As others have mentioned, letting the players show a little more emotion wouldn't hurt - but we don't need fans hazing each other.

Chris_In_Japan, you keep citing all these problems you're having in Japan. You can't even get along on an Anonymous website - you go from zero to Arrrgh! in no time flat - the Obata thread on the Former Players board comes to mind. Maybe some self-inspection is in order. Orange One seemed to be doing a nice job of countering arguments. If you don't have time to read them, let it go - don't get bent out of shape over it.
