Break Point - NETFLIX

I'm hoping it's insightful. I'm keen to see more from Sloane Stephens and Casper Ruud in particular, but just the tour in general. Many people I know got into F1 from Drive To Survive, so I'm hopeful this is similar for tennis.

FAA: "Everybody's trying to win a Grand Slam. Why not me?"

Oh man, someone talk to this guy ...

edit:

Nick's GF: "I'm excited. I want to enjoy watching you play."

From a poor review in today's The Guardian:

"The big scoop is access to Australian 'bad boy' Nick Kyrgios, whose involvement in the 2022 Australian Open drives the opening episode. Notorious for profane on-court outbursts and for allegedly not making the most of his extraordinary talent, Kyrgios calmly solves the supposedly maddening enigma that is his temperament: he has struggled to cope with the expectations that followed his shock victory over Nadal when Kyrgios was just 19.

He finds leaving his loved ones to play tournaments across the world too lonely and arduous to commit to that way of life year-round. Under the pressure and scrutiny of an important match, the fact that he is a loud, emotional, argumentative young man does tend to become visible. In person, Kyrgios is very hard to dislike and so, when he and childhood best mate Thanasi Kokkinakis enjoy an unlikely run to the latter rounds of the men’s doubles in Melbourne, Break Point delivers a stirring against-the-odds tale."

These people produced the F1 documentary too. Great for insomnia.

F1 has an enormous advantage over pro tennis. It's 20 drivers and 23 races. All 20 drivers drive at all 23 races. It's a very compact and concentrated structure. Also, the coaching/managing component expands the in-race content. Tennis lacks that.

Side bar: Courtney Nguyen needs a stylist ASAP. I can't imagine agreeing to be filmed for a Netflix series and choosing to dress like that.

Watched the first couple of episodes. It’s weird they are glossing over the major storyline’s but focusing whole episodes on things like Kyrgios winning the Aus open doubles. Didn’t even mention Ash Barty winning the tournament at all. Had about 2 mins on Djokovic being deported.

The big players like Nadal, Medvedev, Iga etc are only shown in footage from their matches and press conferences, no new actual interviews or footage of them you wouldn’t have seen if following the tournaments at the time.

The show is clearly aimed at people who know nothing about tennis. It’s a bit like watching one of those semi scripted reality tv shows like ‘The Hills’.

Yes, absolutely and probably should be, really.

That said, I think the focus on Ons Jabeur in the 4th episode is pretty great storytelling. She also comes across as a real adult.

Nadal and Medvedev(and Djokovic, Alcaraz) didn't sign on to the show, so that's why they aren't interviewed. Iga will be a big part of future episodes released this summer. If an athlete(like Kyrgios) allows you full access for a docuseries it would make sense to make that your focus instead of Djokovic etc.

I've just watched episode 1. I agree with a previous comment - it's always going to be an uphill battle to make this series super interesting to someone who follows the sport year round and digests a lot of tennis content in general. I've just watched episode 1 and I'm not quite sure what I think. It was interesting enough to not turn off, I suppose. I haven't found my opinion of Nick Kyrgios has changed at all really in a positive or negative way.

Yes clear to me that it’s aimed at new fans. And is focusing on the players coming up, which I think is interesting as a fan. I watched rafa and ash won the AO so I don’t need to see the docu series version too. But there is still a lot of rafa and Novak footage so far.
My fave part so far is matteos grandma saying Mamma Mia! So sweet.

It was interesting seeing some behind the scenes of FAA at Rolland Garros with Tony Nadal. Seeing Jabeur's family scenes were interesting too. Nothing too new for me, but still enjoyable overall as a lead up to the AO. My girlfriend watched 5 hours of it with me in one day, so it is seemingly interesting enough for casuals to enjoy a lot!

respect to T fritz. Everyone loves to call this generation snowflakes for their poor results against the big 3. That took some balls to step on the court for the IW final with a numb ankle against a guy you never even beat when you were healthy

One issue I have with that episode is that they failed to mention that Nadal had an abdominal injury which hindered him in that final.

Edit: injury was a cracked rib

I'd be more interested in a documentary on players trying to make it from Futures level but not sure if there'd be enough interest in players unknown to the public although there was a good series on C4 recently documenting kids at Crystal Palace football academy competing to be retained every 2 years (yes I know football is a 100x more popular). There are of course YouTube blogs.

I could see this element of the game being added as the series grows. They are trying to establish the series at its most high profile level. But, yeah, following a couple of players through the challengers would be nice. Or even through the qualifying events preceding the slams and masters.

My issue with that episode is there was no mention of the fact that Fritz has a son. There’s so much to-do about being a mother while playing tennis…but what about being a father?

I realize he’s divorced and doesn’t see him every day, but I’m also sure it weighs on him throughout the year, and affects his mental state.

It's the first half of the 2022 tennis season - wasn't Nadal's son born at the end of 2022?

I'd give the series 4/10 so far with the FAA/Toni situation being the most 'dramatic' thing to happen... I think that says a lot. This definitely isn't being aimed at hardcore tennis fans which is a shame as I think you could probably create something that caters to both newbies and fans such as TTW users.

I loved it. It’s certainly one of the best docuseries yet on the sport. It was much better than I anticipated.
it was much glossier and way more well made than I anticipated.
I only wish they had at least three more episodes. Netflix is known for doing eight episode series. I wanted more.

Some of my favorite parts were the players voice overs during the match highlights.

This is maybe going to read bad on my part but I didn’t know who Paula Badosa was. I think Ive read about her and maybe even commented about her in the Gear thread. But when they said her name and when she was sitting for her in-studio interview or what they call “a confessional” I couldn’t recall anything about her.
I don’t have the tennis channel anymore and haven’t had it for many many years and that might be why. No wta televised matches.
But when they said she was a Spanish player, I had no idea where she was from and I kind of feel bad about that, but it was good to learn about her. In fact, it was great seeing so many of the behind-the-scenes stuff.
I loved Matteo and Aljas dynamic as a couple. I love that it appears she is the boss in the relationship lol.

There are more episodes being released in the summer. They teased the upcoming episodes at the end of Episode 5, covering Wimbledon/USO etc.
