Watched the first couple of episodes. It’s weird they are glossing over the major storyline’s but focusing whole episodes on things like Kyrgios winning the Aus open doubles. Didn’t even mention Ash Barty winning the tournament at all. Had about 2 mins on Djokovic being deported.

The big players like Nadal, Medvedev, Iga etc are only shown in footage from their matches and press conferences, no new actual interviews or footage of them you wouldn’t have seen if following the tournaments at the time.

The show is clearly aimed at people who know nothing about tennis. It’s a bit like watching one of those semi scripted reality tv shows like ‘The Hills’.

That comparison with The Hills is very apt. I wonder if the players involved had sign-off power on their respective storyline’s because they really get softballed.

I was on Netflix today and it cited this show as the #4 trending program today. I still have no desire to see it as I’m not a fan of reality shows. I just want to watch live tennis matches that are unscripted.

I watched the first 4 episodes, I quite liked it. All I can think though is thank god Rafa and Novak aren't in it. They say the same things over and over, we've seen plenty of clips of them behind the scenes. It's refreshing to hear the thoughts of some other players and their teams...

A documentary about the snowflake gen complaining about "mUh PrEsSuRe!!"?

That's gonna be a hard pass for me.

This is one of the weirdest things about this series for me so far. Every player saying how much pressure they are under and how hard it all is. A non tennis fan watching this would think tennis players are the mentally weakest athletes on earth

Most sports shows are about American athletes in the US. This is a show with mostly international players. Maybe it is more culturally acceptable in many other countries to talk about pressure than it is for men in the US who are expected to not talk about it. Just speculating - haven’t watched the show.

I don’t know, I’ve watched a lot of non American sport documentaries like the ‘All of Northing’ series about Juventus, Man City, NZ All Blacks, Brazilian Soccer team etc and they don’t talk about the difficulties of handling pressure as much as this, with players threatening to retire. Kyrgios, Tomjalovic, and Badosa all make comments about wanting to retire early because of all the pressure so far

Maybe they talk about it more openly because it’s an individual sport, so don’t have to fear being judged by their team mates or their manager/coach. I think it’s probably more highlighting the difference between these players who have never been able to break through and win a major and those that actually have. I can’t imagine a series focusing on the big 3 and Serena would see many comments like that. It will be interesting to see how Alcaraz comes across in the later episodes

I watched the first episode and all I could think was why on earth would a non tennis fan have interest in this. Even for a tennis fan it feels forced. Perhaps I will watch some more.
I'm watching the first episode and my god it's awful? The first episode is focusing on Nick and is so cringe. Talking to his girlfriend of 2.5 months? Showing how she doesn't know how a set of tennis works? Really?

Then they talk about how Australia is a mad sports country who hype up their players yet they don't even mention our #1 Aussie player who oh I don't know, won the Australian Open title (Ash Barty)? Yet they focus instead on the guy who lost in the 2R of singles? It's so badly done. It's like they picked 5 male and 5 female players out of a hat to follow for the year in the hope they'd do well. Some like Jabeur and Ruud did well making multiple slam finals. Others didn't fare so well. Kyrgios made a slam final thanks to a walkover from Nadal in the SF and in the QF was Garin... Yet they hyped him up lol.

Bad netflix series.

It also feels a lot like whenever the camera is on Nick or his team that they are painfully aware of it. None of the interactions feel organic. It's all very cringe but even worse than that it's just boring. Nick isn't an interesting person beyond his outbursts on the court and train wreck behavior. He also doesn't have a particularly interesting background or story.

The way he walked off court after the Broady 1R AO win and looks into the camera and says "**** bro it's like a zoo out there, the crowd, they're mad". Or something along those lines. It's all so fake. I can't get over how the show says how Australia is so sports crazy and we want our players to do well and then don't even mention Barty at all who wins the title but then focus on the guy who got spanked by Medvedev in the 2R. It's embarrassing. And then cutting it with interviews with Roddick and Felix saying Nick has the greatest game of the generation. It's an awful documentary.

Roddick looks so bad. Whoever did his makeup should be fired. And I was embarrassed for him that he said something like "I wish I had his talent."

Roddick looks ugly like his game.
Maybe he should stop pushing his woke political views on Twitter and focus on a gym and nutrition.

The best they could get (at least what i've seen so far) from former players is Roddick and Sharapova?

Yikes.

I had high hopes as I really liked the formula 1 documentary Drive to Survive. But this... this is trash.

Ehh it’s really not that great honestly. Lot of whiners who can’t handle the pressure of playing a sport. Try getting a real job and handle the pressure of a boss pushing unrealistic deadlines on you for a middle class salary
I particularly love the way Kyrgios turned 1 doubles slam into some sort of career triumph as a screw you to his haters after he had his ass handed to him by Medvedev in the 2nd round. He says he will "always be a slam champion" as if doubles somehow matters in the scheme of things for tennis compared to his singles failures. And again, no mention of our actual great Aussie tennis star Ash Barty who won the singles title. Not one mention in the first episode. Yet they paint Kyrgios/Kokkinakis as tennis greats for winning a doubles slam.. Terrible show.

Im not familiar with the Australian award they gave her but he publicly spoke out believing he deserved that award over her for the year he had lol.

The pressure dynamics are different in team sports vs individial sports. Being the only person carrying the responsibility to win or handle loss is different from having teammates to rely on and get their support in difficult moments.

That is not to say that Kyrgios and the NextGen are not comparativly weaker when it comes to mentality. That is also a factor in their perception of pressure and others' expectations.

Yeah that was the Newcombe medal and the idiot had the audacity to say he deserved it more because he made a Wimbledon final thanks to a walkover in the SF and won a doubles slam vs Barty who was the first Aussie to take home the Australian Open singles title in 45+ years. Kyrgios is a joke and the documentary, even bigger joke.

The Barty omission was so weird. What the hell happened there?

Really sums up some of the bizarre blind spots that this series has imo.

Tennis must have so many under the radar stories and personal journeys that are not getting told because of conflicts of interest and competing governing bodies, language barriers, and players being too time poor to be involved in a TV production etc etc.

It would be great to see a tennis documentary series come along with some journalistic nouse and decent legal backing blowing the lid on some of the dodginess in tennis or telling real unvarnished stories of life on the tour.

It truly felt like they picked their 5 or so players from each tour to follow and just focussed on them and to hell with the rest. It’s just really badly done.

I agree with all of you ... @jarko111, @big ted ( I liked the Fish doc. too) @DSH, @MichaelNadal, @Red Rick, @jdx2112, @toby55555, @Grizzy , @lim, @BeatlesFan, @McLovin, @accidental, @clayqueen and numerous others.
I am liking this very much - not because it is great - it isn't, but because generally the ATP and others do such a poor job of giving us insight into the sport we love. It seems they don't really like their fans - only their sponsors. So it is great from this POV !!

The greats aren't part of it - they don't need to be. I can't imagine Fed, Nadal or Djokovic exposing any real weaknesses that opponents could seize upon. Younger generations really struggle with mental challenges and this makes it resonate.

Great to get a taste of (any) behind the scenes, a pretty rare glimpse. Are parts boring - yes, everyday life of even the most high-profile people - is everyday life, typically a daily grind but with enormous tennis talent. I like that I will recognize some of the people hanging around in the "players box" and who they are to that player.

I enjoyed the F1's "Drive to Survive" , Cycling's "The Least Expected Day" for the same reasons. You realize we only get to see them for an hour or two, but they spend their whole day/lives preparing for that - even the ones bounce in the first round.

Most people grind away at a desk or cubicle thinking how great it would be to walk out on centre court and just play a game, but they never realize stress and and minutia of athletes training / travel / coaching.
Ok gotta go back to work and finish my TPS Reports or I'll be in big trouble.

As one of you said a great lead in to AO !!

LOL but to be fair, I think current and former tennis professionals is hardly the target audience. They have probably seen plenty of players walking around with their girls friends live. And also, there is some of Fritz walking around with his girlfriend as well. Equally uninteresting.

BUT, I liked the series. Or at least parts of it. Getting to hear them commenting on their matches and what they were going through was good. The Ons Jabeur story was nice.

How about the ATP giving us more stats (CPI, shot speed, RPM, return depth, more career stats etc.) like other sports do these days instead of reality TV?

Not sure why all the hate, but maybe I'm just easily entertained.
