Break points.

I'm always bugged by the way BP stats are determined.

If a player has 4 BP opportunities, and converts 1, why isn't there a stat that indicates whether the converted BPs are in 1,2,3 or 4 games?

I think that the BP criteria should be a function of how many games a player actually breaks. In my above example, I would think it's better for a player to convert in 1 game with 4 BP opportunities, than 4 BP chances in 4 different games.

This is one stat I find a bit misleading.

I'm not following you as to why it matters. A break point is one and the same regardless if it's in a single game or 3 return games in a row. Any one conversion and serve is broken.

I get what your saying. It's seems that if a match has player A with a 8:2 BP vs player B with a 2:2 BP converted, that one stat looks better, when both players converted 2 times, and player A may have converted in 2 games similar to player B.

Does that make one player look like they don't convert as much, the BP stats would say yes when you average in 8:2 vs 2:2, but bottom line is that each player converted in the games they had opportunity.

Maybe, I'm looking at the numbers differently. I see those scenarios as more alike, than if player A had 8 BP opportunities in 8 games, but only converted 2.

I used to be under the impression that there was a difference between Break Point Chances and Break Point Opportunities. Chances is just a running total, how many break points you won out of how many played, while wasting the first two of a triple-break point scenario but then converting is 1/1 in BP Opportunities.

My understanding, and correct me if I'm wrong is that they just keep a tally of opportunities vs conversions.

That's my point, there's a subtle difference between the stats, that in my mind is a better indicator.

Is there a stat where you can know how many games one particular player had break points?

Because this has been bugging me as well. One player may get 20 break points in one game and none for the rest of the match. Just by looking at the stats one would think that the player had too many break opportunities but in reality he only had one opportunity of breaking serve. Another player may only get 2 break points but in 2 different games. Although he only had 2 BPs, he actually had 2 opportunities to break serve, better than the first player.

Agree with the break conversion. I don't care how many BPs were wasted in a particular game as long as a player actually breaks in that game. I think there should also be a stat called "break game" as a complement to break point.

Interesting thought. If a player has break points in almost every game, then that player is clearly putting a lot of pressure on his opponent versus maybe having a bunch of break points in 1 bad service game for the opponent.
