Breakdown of Aggregate Slam Quality among the Big 3

USO2010

Rookie
In this framework, Grand Slam titles are weighted by the average quality of opposition faced, in the circumstances of the era they were in. We are merely attempting to quantify the average eye test ratings from historical posts, which discuss old draws/old match quality and strength of prior eras.

Slams won over prime elite opponents and deep tournament fields, are weighted more heavily than slam titles won in weaker competitive environments.

We need to account for strength of draw which is based on two factors: depth and top-end quality. This is reflected in the scoring criteria below.

We also need a multiplier to reflect slam inflation: where overall quality declines as the elite field continues to age and get phased out of professional tennis, while the next generation has not yet matured. This factor thus adjusts for the overall strength of the tour. (e.g. 2009 AO F was stronger quality than 2017 AO F, given that the matchup occurred in their primes, and the top end talent were generally in their primes)

Scoring Criteria

Standard Slam — 4 points: Awarded when the title does not satisfy any of the higher-quality criteria below.
Deep Draw — 5 points: Awarded for navigating a particularly deep field containing several high-quality opponents.
Elite Scalp — 5 points: Awarded for defeating an all-time great playing at least a good level, or a Hall-of-Fame-caliber player performing near his peak.
Elite Draw + Elite Scalp — 7 points: Awarded for navigating a deep draw while also defeating an all-time great playing at a high level, or a Hall-of-Fame-caliber player near his peak.
Intermediate Case — 6 points: Awarded when the overall difficulty falls between an elite scalp or deep draw and the combined elite-draw-plus-elite-scalp category.

Era Multiplier
  • Prime Era (2003–2016): Multiplier = 1.00. Titles are awarded full value.
  • Career Inflation Era (2017–2023): Starting from a factor of 0.8, a compounding 5% annual reduction is applied to reflect the gradual weakening of the field, as the elite talent continues to age, without the consistent presence of an emerging ATG talent.
  • 2017: 0.80×
  • 2018: 0.76×
  • 2019: 0.72×
  • 2020: 0.69×
  • 2021: 0.65×

With the help of the establishment, LOL at:

Any of Fed's competitors meaning anything on HC or grass from 00 to 10.

Or any of Rafa's competitors meaning anything on clay.

Real slams. Real strong scalps in your prime against quality opposition in their primes (deep draws or versus prime ATGs). Not this Berrettini, Tsitsipas, 35 yr old Federer, Geriatric v. Geriatric crap.
Who can you beat when you are in your prime. Thats the pinnacle of tennis. Very little value to geriatric stat padding in a weak era.

1) 4 points awarded for navigating through deep draw.
2) 4 points awarded for beating ATG playing atleast a "good" level of tennis or a HOF'er with a high peak at his peak
3) 7 points awarded for navigating a deep draw AND beating ATG at good level or HOF'er with a high peak at his peak
4) 5.5 points can be awarded for draws at a level deemed to be in between 2) and 3)

Ok lets start.

Federer: 10 real slams (57.5 points)
03 WB (Roddick playing ATG level): 4 points
04 AO (Hewwy, Nalby, Ferrero, Safin): 5.5 points

06 WB (Ancic, prime Nadal): 4 points
07 WB (prime Nadal): 5.5
07 USO (strong Roddick, young Djokovic): 5.5 points
08 USO (solid Djokovic): 4 points
09 FO (deep draw featuring Soderling + Delpo): 5.5 points
09 WB (deep draw w/ strong Roddick): 4 points
12 WB (Benneteau, Djokovic, peak Murray): 7 points

Nadal: 11 real slams (66 points)

05 RG (modest depth w/ Grosjean, Puerta, and prime Fed): 5.5 points

08 RG (deep draw + prime Fed + high level Djokovic): 7 points
08 WB (prime Fed, Murray): 5.5 points
09 AO (deep draw - Gonzalez, Simon, Verdasco, prime Fed): 7 points

12 RG (good prime Djokovic): 5.5 points

14 RG (good prime Djokovic): 4 points

Djokovic: 10 real slams (56.5 points)

08 AO (strong draw headlined by Tsonga, Fed): 5.5 points
11 AO (strong draw, Fed Murray Berdych): 7 points
11 WB (Tomic, Tsonga, mediocre Nadal): 5.5 points
11 USO (great Fed, mediocre Nadal): 5.5 points
12 AO (Peak Murray, Nadal): 7 points
13 AO (peak Wawa, strong Berdych, good Murray): 7 points
14 WB (deep draw but old Fed): 5.5 points
15 AO (Stan, Ok Murray): 4 points
15 WB (deep draw but old Fed): 5.5 points
18 WB (Nadal): 4 points

You lost all credibility the second you put Ferrero on there, this must be trolling “new poster” pure trash

So if you are post-prime beating ATGs in their prime, it doesn't count lol. And being in your prime, beating great players who aren't ATG (Roddick) it counts. Strong logic.

PS: If a slam doesn't count as a slam because you didn't beat "an ATG", then if you beat an ATG and don't win the slam, it should count as a slam.

Wouldn’t this make PETE the BOAT by this metric then? You’d subtract maybe one or two mug draws (Pioline Opens) etc but his entire Slam collection came within his ‘prime’ and he has enough scalps over good to great players to pick up at least 4 points at each one, sometimes possibly 7, depending on your opinion of Goran, Courier and Agassi.

I quit these games like 2 years ago lol

1) Fed was at the very end of his prime at WB 2012 and defeated prime Djokovic...that counts. There hasn't been an instance of an GOAT candidate way past their prime beating a GOAT candidate in their prime in slams. If that happens it severely undermines their credibility. If that happened to Djokovic in 2015 he certainly should fall down a few tiers.

2) I'm talking about level here. Anyone can see 03-04 WB Roddick was ATG worthy. Peak Wawa, Peak Dasco, etc.

3) A slam is a slam. I'm talking about real slams where you win the whole thing in tough draws. No brownie points for second place.

PETE is up there. Only '97 WB, '00 WB come to the top of my head as WEAK.

But that's still 12 slams. It's possible he is the BOAT alongside Nadal or maybe even over Nadal.

I will do the analysis soon. Unless someone here wants to do it.

Hate to break it to you buddy, but if that wasnt competition for them, then what has Djokers competition been since?
Checkmate. "Djokovic doesn't even qualify as competition for Nadal on clay"

Ok, so Djokovic can't be the GOAT.

If Fed and Djokovic aren't competition then what does that say about Berrettini, Tsitispas, Murray :-D

1) Fed was at the very end of his prime at WB 2012 and defeated prime Djokovic...that counts.

Schrodinger's prime. If Djokovic beats Federer in 2011 and 2012, it doesn't count as a prime for Federer. If Federer wins, it does.

There hasn't been an instance of an GOAT candidate way past their prime beating a GOAT candidate in their prime in slams.

Looks like the bar is different for Djokovic's rivals. AO 2020 Thiem? USO 2018 Delpo? Medvedev for USO 2023 and AO 2021? Zverev a few times? Grosjean, Ferrero, Johansson, Ancic are mentioned but not them; strange. One might think you are biased. Benneateau lol.

3) A slam is a slam. I'm talking about real slams where you win the whole thing in tough draws. No brownie points for second place.

A slam is a slam, regardless of who you beat. If you think a slam is "undeserved" because you didn't beat a "prime ATG", then a slam is where you beat one and didn't win, it is a slam you deserved. You can't have your cake and eat it. Either you judge the slams regardless, or if you asterisk one way you asterisk the other as well.

Anyway, Djokovic has more wins over prime ATGs than Federer. Nadal might have more than both, but mostly because Djokovic and Federer were constantly going deep at their worst slam, Roland Garros, while Nadal was losing to scrubs at Wimbledon year after year for a while.

1) I'm sorry did Djokovic win those slams? That's the whole point. If he beats Sincaraz at 38 en route to a slam that's a full 7 points. Alas, he didn't.

2) AO 2021? Lol, the only half decent opponent was Zverev.
USO 2023? I'm talking about draw depth and/or ATG quality opponents.
Thiem alone isn't enough to grant that a strong draw in 2020. He was rather mid tactically in that match, backhand wasn't great. It was probably a B+ Thiem. Prime Djokovic sends him packing in straights, lets be honest.

These post-prime victories vulturing slams against old guys and mugs is a different story man. I'm not counting Nadal 2017-2020 RG, not even Nadal 2013 USO. Those were weak draws and Djokovic was very mediocre in the final of USO 2013.

Benneteau 2012 was in the early rounds of the slam. Point is it was a deep draw (Djokovic + Peak Murray + deep grass court draw)

3) Undeserved and deserved aren't real words. What do those words even mean. Did Murray deserve more slams? Did Roddick deserve more slams? Did Djokovic deserve less lsams? I'm not talking about deserved or undeserved. I've already defined the criteria above. How much can you win in your very prime against strong draws. That's what people tune in for. That is tennis at its best, that is the culmination of tennis greatness.

4) Djokovic lost as much in his PRIME to Murray/Wawrinka as he beat Fedal in the slams. Slams ripe for the taking. Don't gimme that crap. Djokovic was not the same big match player like Nadal, and until Fed was in his 30s wasn't able to take control of the rivalry.

Pete is neck and neck w/ Nadal, based on my metric.
I will admit, I've only probably seen chunks of matches from half of these slams.
Maybe someone more knowledgeable can make accurate modifications to the point scoring.

PETE: 11 real slams (65 points)

1993 WB (Agassi, Becker Courier): 7 points
1994 WB (deep draw): 5.5 points
1995 WB (Ivanisevic, Becker): 7 points
1997 WB (decent depth, old Becker): 4 points
1998 WB (Ivanisevic finals, Scud, Henman): 7 points
1999 WB (Agassi, Henman) 4 points

1990 USO (Utterly stacked draw): 7 points
1995 USO (Agassi Courier Scud) 7 points
1996 USO (very deep draw) 5.5 points
2002 USO (decent depth + Agassi): 5.5

1994 AO: (tough draw, esp. early): 5.5

Keep in mind that the player's overall status doesn't necessarily make him a tougher opponent and vice versa. Form is usually more important and in the case of 1994, Todd Martin was a fairly tough competitor and the second best grass player that year. Had a great run at Queen's, beating players like young Henman and Rusedski, then Edberg and Sampras in the final. At Wimbledon, he upset Agassi in a classic and was the only player to take a set off Pete (even though he survived several marathons and was probably a bit tired). And unlike the majority of huge servers, he actually had a very solid and steady return of serve, so Sampras probably deserves a bit more points for his 1994 run (his best form at Wimbledon IMO).

This applies to every player from your list, of course, I just used Pete as an example.

I might need a rewatch of the SF (or QF?) against Todd Martin. I don't remember it very well.

I've tried to go by form as best as I could. But I overlooked this one. Made the modification, thanks.

Pretty solid player that adds good depth to a draw with Safin, Hewitt. Not sure what your argument is here.

Certainly better than the Sheltons, Tsitsipases and the Berrettinis Djokovic's faced the last 5 years in slam SFs and Fs.

It's trash! How can you award 7 points to '04 WB and 5 points to '11 WB with a 'mediocre' Nadal. Maybe Djokovic made Nadal into mediocre?

What trash!!!

I didn't even include 2013 USO because Djokovic was so mid in the final.
5.5 for 2011 is generous - that Nadal was no better than 2013 USO Djokovic.

Hewitt was constantly injured, Safin prioritized partying and women as well as injured, Nalbandian didn’t even care for tennis and dreamed of racing cars, Roddick was constantly injured trash backhand and zero net game, Johannsson no one here even knows who he is, Grosjean some frenchie that no one knows, Kiefer is that the drink, Benneteau Benny who, old Agassi gotta be kidding me, whole list of trash

You’re trying way too hard, go make yet another account again….

Sensing some very palpable butthurt I didn't include the bery bery stronk slam draws of 2015 USO, 2018 USO, 2021 AO, 2021 WB, 2022 WB, 2023 AO and 2023 USO.

Do you remember the SF? He basically had a walkover to the final.
I feel like a solid final largely makes up for all of that though. He still had to be good enough to beat Federer. Maybe if Fed was bad I’d mark it up as a weak draw but he was pretty solid (by a general standard; obviously for Fed’s loftier standards it was a bit underwhelming).

As far as I remember it was pretty mid from Fed. He threw away almost every breakpoint he had - dumping too many forehands into the net...many errant forehands.

I don't have the stats, but something like 1/12 on 2nd serve breakpoints? come on now, that is horrid.

I'm not blaming Fed here, but that's just how it works when you're 35 playing against someone who is 29 and top 3 of all time.

Djokovic was solid but I don't think its his best form. He was quite better at both 2014/15 WB. Maybe I need a replay, I dunno. But this is what I remember.

Mr X has a net worth of a million bucks. But since 400k was acquired during a weak era, his hypothetical net worth is only 600k; despite having an actual net worth of a million bucks.

Is Mr. X a millionaire?

Answer: Yeah, but no.

Fed was terrible on BPs but also played a super high-risk game compared to his norm so while his conversion was bad I don’t think it was quite as awful as the numbers suggest.

I think it was a pretty fair strategic choice because he got killed on the baseline in the Wimbledon final. Fed executed it better than I expected, but the errors still came of course.

Pretty good outing overall.
